Freddie Kitchens wears ‘Pittsburgh started it’ shirt

Cleveland Browns coach Freddie Kitchens wore an interesting shirt, to say the least.

Not the best week to give anyone bulletin-board material for either the Cleveland Browns or Pittsburgh Steelers. So, one has to question Freddie Kitchens’ wardrobe choice: A “Pittsburgh started it” T-shirt that found its way to Instagram and, of course, went viral.

The shirt references the fight between the teams in their first meeting a couple weeks ago. Myles Garrett of the Browns and Mason Rudolph got into it. The result was an indefinite suspension for the Browns’ defensive star, a couple more player bans and hundreds of thousands of dollars of fines.

A Browns spokesman told ESPN’s Adam Schefter Kitchens’ daughters gave him the shirt “as a joke” and that he wore it to see the film “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” with his family. The Browns said Kitchens did not intend for anyone to see it and “understands it’s not a good look.”

Prediction

Steelers 23, Browns 20

Moneyline (?)

The STEELERS (+115) are short dogs at home, but they’re worth a roll of the dice. The Browns (-139) are on a season-high three-game winning streak but have struggled over the years in Pittsburgh and it’s hard to see them getting over that hump.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on the moneyline returns an $11.50 profit with a Pittsburgh victory.

Against the Spread (?)

The STEELERS (+1.5, +100) are a better value on the moneyline, so it’s better to just take them outright to win. If they cover, they’re going to hit the moneyline, too. Why not make a few more dollar bills?

Over/Under (?)

OVER 39.5 (-106) is worth a small-unit bet. It’s hard to trust a Pittsburgh offense without Conner and Smith-Schuster, while starting a UDFA under center. But this one has the potential to at least be in the 40’s.

Steelers announce Devlin Hodges will start at QB vs. Browns over Mason Rudolph

Mason Rudolph has been benched for “Duck” Hodges vs. the Browns

Some of the boiling drama from this weekend’s game in Pittsburgh between the Browns and Steelers is now simmered, thanks to Mike Tomlin. The Steelers coach announced that Devlin Hodges will start at quarterback instead of Mason Rudolph.

It’s a justifiable football decision based on how poorly Rudolph has played the past couple of weeks, including the game in Cleveland in Week 11 that ended with Myles Garrett hitting him over the head with his own helmet as part of a brawl. Hodges took over midway through Pittsburgh’s comeback victory in Week 12 over the winless Bengals.

Hodges is an undrafted rookie from Samford. He has one previous start, a win over the Chargers where “Duck” completed 15 of his 20 pass attempts for 132 yards, with one TD and one INT.

Did Devlin Hodges earn the Steelers starting QB job?

Which quarterback starts for the Steelers this week?

On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a move to try to give the offense a boost and it worked. Devlin Hodges came in and got the Steelers their only touchdown of the game in place of Mason Rudolph. This now creates a quarterback controversy head coach Mike Tomlin will have to address.

Tomlin now must decide if Hodges did enough to earn the starting job this week against the Cleveland Browns.

[polldaddy poll=10467582]

The reality of the situation is this decision about which quarterback is better. Neither player is playing good football right now. Rudolph’s confidence seems shot and his arm went with it. And while Hodges is the gritty and all those other cliches, he doesn’t offer much in terms of skills.

This decision is about who gives the Steelers a better chance to win this week. The Steelers have five games left and who is under center must be a unique choice based on the circumstances. Based on everything this week, I don’t see how Tomlin goes with Rudolph.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin hints at quarterback change

Mike Tomlin has to name a starting quarterback soon.

In Sunday’s game, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was put in the unenviable position of benching his quarterback. Mason Rudolph was completely ineffective through two quarters and to get a spark to the offense made the switch to Devlin Hodges. The move paid off and the Steelers ended up winning 16-10.

But this leaves Tomlin with a decision to make about the upcoming week. The Steelers have to take on the Cleveland Browns this week in a must-win game. Which quarterback will Tomlin start? He didn’t share any of his insight in the postgame press conference but teased he might already know.

There will be a great deal of debate about this but we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves. No doubt Hodges gave the Steelers something of a spark when he came off the bench in the third quarter. But after throwing for 90 yards and a touchdown in his first drive could only muster 28 passing yards after that.

Who will Tomlin start at quarterback this week? We should know something on Tuesday at his first press conference of the week because whoever it is will need plenty of reps ahead of the Browns game.
