After a strong start to the season by the Terrapins under 1st-year coach Kevin Willard — opening 8-0 — the train has fallen off the tracks a bit in recent games.

With 3 losses in its last 5 games, Maryland has come back to the pack and is more what it was expected to be before a hot start. An early December win against Illinois doesn’t look as good now as the Illini (9-4, 0-2) also have begun to struggle. While losses to current No. 10 Tennessee, No. 8 UCLA and 15th-ranked Wisconsin were all to top-20 teams, being non-competitive in an 87-60 home loss to UCLA is not the showing the team wanted.

Michigan, after starting in the Top 25, also has slid down the ranks this season. Its most recent game was a stunning 63-61 loss as 21.5-point home favorites to directional state school Central Michigan. A win at Minnesota in the 1st conference game back on Dec. 8 was a good start for Michigan, but it has lost 2 of 3 since, including 2 in a row. With games coming up against the cream of the Big Ten, getting a win over Maryland will be needed.

The lack of energy will show in the players as well and Maryland will take advantage. MARYLAND (-110) is my FAVORITE PLAY in this game.

Against the spread

PASS.

Maryland +1.5 (-120), as the underdog, would be the play in this game, but don’t worry about the 1.5 points of insurance.

The moneyline is the wager to make on this game. Michigan will come out flat and Maryland will win.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 143.5 (-105).

Both teams will come out a bit slow. This is what Maryland wants as it has played 9 of 13 games to the Under thus far.

Michigan has been a little bit better getting 7 of 12 games Over, but Maryland will dictate the pace and the UNDER 143.5 (-105) will hit.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl: Maryland vs. NC State odds, picks and predictions

These former ACC rivals have a long and rich history. The all-time series is tied 33-33-4, with Maryland winning the most recent game on Nov. 30, 2013, in Raleigh. This is the 1st-ever meeting in the series for a bowl.

Maryland will be down 3 receivers. WRs Jacob Copeland (26-376-2), Dontay Demus Jr. (22-233-1) and Rakim Jarrett (40-471-3) all elected to opt out. Jarrett is the biggest loss, as he was tied for the team lead in receptions and just 7 yards shy of leading the team in receiving yards.

The big news for NC State is that QB Devin Leary, the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, entered the transfer portal. However, the Wolfpack have mostly adjusted to life without Leary already as he has been sidelined since early Oct. due to injury.

Maryland won its regular-season finale 37-0 against Rutgers to snap a 3-game losing skid that came against 3 bowl teams. UMD has also covered the past 2 games after an 0-5 ATS skid.

NC State dumped rival North Carolina 30-27 in overtime to record a road win in its regular-season finale. The Wolfpack needed that, as they entered with back-to-back losses against Louisville and a non-bowl team, Boston College.

NC STATE (-115) is a solid play on the moneyline, as the group suiting up Friday afternoon is basically the same unit that ended the season on a high note.

Maryland was gutted in the receiver’s room and will have to transfer its offense a little bit. QB Taulia Tagovailoa will still try and sling it, but after WRs Jeshaun Jones (40-478-4) and Corey Dyches (35-449-3), there is a precipitous drop-off in experience.

NC State ranks 11th nationally against the run (102.8 yards allowed per game), so Maryland will find the sledding awfully tough as it tries to adjust. The Pack allow just 325.7 total yards (21st) and 19.4 points per game (15th), so advantage NC State.

Against the spread

NC STATE -1 (-111) is slightly cheaper than the ML, and the only difference would be that an ML bet would be a win and a spread bet would be a push if NC State should win by 1 point.

The Terrapins are 6-1 ATS in the past 7 non-conference games and 4-1 ATS in the past 5 vs. ACC. However, the Terps covered just 2 of the final 7 games overall, and Maryland is just 16-35 ATS in the past 51 tries vs. winning teams.

The Wolfpack are 2-7 ATS in the past 9 games overall, and they just haven’t been able to stack wins or covers. NC State is just 1-4 ATS in the past 5 following a cover, and 1-4 ATS in the past 5 following a SU win.

It’s also 8-3-1 ATS across its past 12 games and is back bowling after losing out on a chance last year at the Holiday Bowl when UCLA pulled out at the last minute due to a COVID issue.

Over/Under

UNDER 45.5 (-112) is the lean here, although it is only worth a half-unit play at best.

NC State’s defense is nasty, and Maryland should struggle to put up points with 3 receivers opting out.

The Wolfpack have some questions at quarterback, too, as QB MJ Morris is nursing an undisclosed injury. QB Ben Finley proved he can be useful if needed, and QB Jack Chambers has plenty of experience, too.

The concern for Maryland is that fact F Julian Reese (11.2 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.1 BPG) is a question mark due to a nagging shoulder injury.

The Terrapins are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 home games and they are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against foes playing .600 or better ball.

Maryland is a big and experienced team, and it is one a bit more battle-tested this season than its visitors from Los Angeles. Across 5 Quad 1 games, the Terps are 4-1 ATS, while the Bruins are 1-3 ATS in 4 such contests. One intersection exists in those groups of games: both sides have played the Illinois Fighting Illini. UM defeated Illinois 71-66 (Dec. 2); UCLA lost to the Illini 79-70 (Nov. 18).

After losing its last outing 64-59 on Tuesday to Wisconsin as 2.5-point underdogs, Maryland faces a tough task to get back on the winning track against Tennessee. The Terrapins beat their 1st 7 opponents by double-digits but have found things a bit more difficult since entering Big Ten play. They did beat Illinois 71-66 as a 1.5-point favorite before losing to the Badgers.

Tennessee has only 1 loss as well this season — an inexplicable 78-66 loss to Colorado in Nashville as 15-point favorites in the 2nd game of the season. Since then, the Vols have been dominating opponents winning 4 times by 30-plus points. In its biggest test of the season, Tennessee handled No. 6 Kansas 64-50 on a neutral floor. As the SEC season starts, the Volunteers are the favorites to win the conference and gain a No. 1 seed in March Madness.

Tennessee has been dominating opponents in recent games and will do so again in this matchup. Tennessee will win but at -250 the number is too big to wager on. If you want to add it as a last leg of a parlay, you can. But as a straight wager, stay away from the ML.

The Volunteers are on a tear, and I do not see it ending on Sunday. Maryland had a great run to start the season, but now the hard games start, and it will come back down to earth. Tennessee is by far the best team Maryland has played to this point and I see Tennessee covering this game easily. Tennessee -5.5 (-110) is my favorite play.

Over/Under

BET OVER 134.5 (-110).

Tennessee can score and with this ability, Maryland will be forced to match points. This game will also be near double-digits coming down the stretch meaning the Terrapins will be forced to foul the Vols and have them get their points at the line.

This bet could be close, but I like the Over more then the Under and this is what I would make a play on.
