Maryland’s defense was relentless, holding the Buckeyes to 17 first-half points — the Terps led 50-17 at the half — and forcing 17 turnovers overall in the impressive win. The Terrapins are off to an impressive start, with their only loss coming in a tight home battle against No. 4 Marquette — 78-74 as 2.5-point favorites. Purdue also faced the Golden Eagles but lost by 18 — 76-58 as a 5.5-point road underdog. Maryland has covered in its last 2 games, including the dominant Big Ten opener against Ohio State.

While Purdue has relied on Kaufman-Renn (18.7 points per game) to fill the void left by C Zach Edey, he’ll face a tough challenge against Maryland’s standout freshman in Queen, who’s averaging 16.6 PPG and 8.3 rebounds per game.

Maryland’s balanced attack has been lethal, shooting 49.5% from the field, while forcing 16.8 turnovers per game on defense. The Boilermakers, meanwhile, are coming off a sloppy performance with 24 turnovers against the Nittany Lions.

Expect the TERRAPINS (+155) to edge out a hard-fought victory on the road.

If you want to play it safe and take the 4.5 points with the Terps, I won’t fault you. I prefer the plus-odds with the moneyline.

Over/Under

This total feels too low, and I’m jumping on it.

Both teams average a combined 164.1 points per game — Maryland 86.3 PPG, Purdue at 77.8 PPG. That’s 20.6 points higher than the O/U line. While Big Ten matchups can be slow-paced, this one doesn’t feel like it’ll drop that far.

Maryland had hit Overs in 5 straight games until it shut down Ohio State. The Terps still scored 83 points in that contest.

Purdue has scored 70-plus points in 8 of 9 games, and Maryland has cracked 90 three times this season, including twice in the last 3 games. The Terrapins thrive on speeding things up, as seen in their 22 points off turnovers against the Buckeyes.

Marquette is playing on the road for the first time, but it is a veteran team and one that brings defense and a hot pace. Maryland went just 2-7 ATS in its first 9 games last season and overall at home was just 6-11 ATS.

The Eagles tempo and proclivity for launching 3s (34.0 per game so far) figures as a key 1-2 punch in the attack on Maryland. Against Big Ten comps Illinois, Nebraska and Penn State last season, the Terrapins went 2-3 ATS.

Still, Maryland by maybe a bucket is about right. Make it a portion of a unit perhaps, but TAKE MARQUETTE +1.5 (-110). Of course, if you like Marquette to win, bet the moneyline instead at plus-money.

Northwestern’s offense has been lackluster, and their defense has shown significant weaknesses, allowing opponents to score freely. On the other hand, Maryland’s offense is thriving, averaging 33.4 points per game. Edwards is poised for another strong performance against Northwestern’s vulnerable defense.

The Terrapins have also been reliable in covering the spread, going 6-3 ATS over their last 9 games. They’ve demonstrated a tendency to dominate games at home, with many of their matchups going over the point total, thanks to their high-scoring offense. Northwestern simply doesn’t have the firepower or defensive strength to keep pace with Maryland, and this game could easily turn into a blowout. Expect the Terrapins to control the game from the start and cover the spread, winning comfortably by 21+ points.

Indiana (-275) will set you back nearly 3 times your potential return, and that’s quite a bit of risk for not enough reward.

On the flip side, we haven’t seen much letup from the Hoosiers, and it’s hard to trust Maryland (+225) for the upset based on its loss to a mediocre Michigan State side earlier this season.

PASS.

Against the spread

INDIANA -7 (-110) is a strong play laying the touchdown, and, quite frankly, it’s surprising this number isn’t a little higher.

Maryland +7 (-110) has really struggled to stop the pass, allowing 247.0 yards per game through the air. That’s a problem against an Indiana side which has piled up 513.8 total yards per game, including 288.3 yards per game through the air.

And, IU has played tremendous defense, too, which Maryland will have much difficulty solving.

Over/Under

UNDER 52.5 (-110) is the lean, go very, very lightly, with a half-unit play at the absolute most.

While Indiana has scored 42 or more points in each of the past 3 outings, including the conference opener at UCLA on Sept. 14, it hasn’t had to contend with a driving rain this season. Alabama (-425), by most metrics, is the best team in the nation. It should win, but it has no value to do so outright. Maryland (+325) showed resilience against West Virginia, but I’ll take the pass here — the Crimson Tide should win this one by margin.

Against the spread

LEAN ALABAMA -8.5 (-105).

Alabama has one of the nation’s elite offenses, ranking 5th in points per game (82.6).

It will be taking on a Terrapins side that is solid on the defensive end, but Miller and company have played tough defenses like Tennessee which ranks 3rd in opponents’ points per game. The Crimson Tide have also stepped their game up when it matters most, posting a 3-1 ATS record in the postseason.

Maryland got out to a rough start against WVU and won’t be able to recover if that happens against Alabama. The Terrapins have struggled to score all season and rank 200th in points per game (70.3), and that will be the deciding factor Saturday.
