Ohio State vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

Ohio State is too good at both ends of the floor on the inside.

It’s second in the Big Ten in shooting percentage, it’s doing a nice job from the outside, and the defense is solid at generating blocked shots and is okay on the defensive boards.

Maryland will shoot plenty of threes, but it doesn’t make enough of them and the defense has a hard time getting out and forcing mistakes and stopping threes.

The Terps have allowed 40% shooting or better in each of the last eight games and are getting bombed on too easily at times. Ohio State wasn’t on from the outside against Iowa, but it’s been effective against everyone else over the last month.

Basically, Maryland will have a hard time keeping up, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Maryland Will Win

Maryland won’t have to worry about turnovers or mistakes, and the defense should be better than it was the first time around.

The Buckeyes hit over 50% from the field and made 11 threes, and that’s almost certainly not happening again. The Terp offense failed to get to 40% from the field, but if the attack can force its way to the free throw line it’ll have a shot.

Ohio State’s defense might be decent overall, but it doesn’t force mistakes. Maryland should be able to attack the rim, and even if it doesn’t generate points, it should get fouled enough to matter.

However …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State is shooting too well.

Maryland needs to own the free throw line – it’s great when it gets there – but the Buckeyes have been a machine lately with 71 free throw attempts over the last three games.

Maryland needs to make lots and lots of free throws along with making 45% of its shots from the field.

Neither will happen.

Purdue vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Maryland Will Win

On a four-game losing steak, Maryland is having defensive issues without enough takeaways or stops inside or out. What is it doing right?

It’s hitting its threes.

Not normally a great outside shooting team, it cranked up 14 threes in the 110-87 loss to Iowa and came up with ten in the 82-67 loss to Ohio State. The team can’t hang shot for shot with the Boilermakers, but if they can start putting the pressure on from the outside early, they might have a shot.

How did Purdue lose to Michigan 82-58 a few days ago? The Wolverines nailed 12-of-21 from three.

As good as Purdue is overall, the defense allows ways too many made shots. Everyone seems to be hitting from outside lately, but …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Purdue Will Win

Maryland isn’t cranking up the offense even with the threes.

The offensive rebounds aren’t there, the inside shooting is erratic, there are way too many turnovers, and in general, there aren’t enough offensive options to keep things going against the versatile Boilermakers.

Even with the loss to Michigan, Purdue is still the best scoring team in the Big Ten. It’s still the best rebounding team, it’s great from the line, and it’s the best in the conference from three.

Maryland won’t get enough rebounds to make up for the other issues.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

This might be a plucky Maryland team that has its moments, but the three point shooting against Iowa was an aberration.

Purdue is going to be salty.

That Michigan loss was a blip, but that ends now. The dominance at home will continue. Currently 14-0 in Mackey, Purdue will come out hot and cruise from there.

Maryland vs Ohio State Game Preview

Why Maryland Will Win

Maryland’s been on a rough run – it can’t seem to buy too many breaks – but the defense hasn’t been all that bad.

The rebounding at times has been strong, and the three-point defense is solid, and now it all has to come together against a team that should be a tad rusty.

After all of the weather problems over the last week, the Buckeyes haven’t plays since January 30th and haven’t won a game since the 27th. They might be rested, but considering they weren’t hot from the outside over the last few games against Big Ten teams, the Terp defense has to be on from the start.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Ohio State Will Win

Maryland is hitting its shots from the field and it’s not enough. It has to be doing everything right on the inside and can’t miss its free throws because the overall scoring punch just isn’t there.

It’s a bit by design – this isn’t a team that’s going to race up and down the court – but the scoring just isn’t there. It’s a struggle to get to 70 – it hasn’t done it more than twice since December.

Ohio State might not have been red hot before the week off, but in general it’s a strong shooting team that can work inside and out. It’s the second-best shooting team in the Big Ten, and it should be able to find ways to get past one of he nation’s best scoring defenses.

However …

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State has to be patient.

It’s going to want to get up and go against a Terp team that does a whole lot of things right, and that includes keeping games in the 60s and under.

Can the Buckeyes get to 70? Maryland is 0-9 when it doesn’t get to 68 points,  and Ohio State is 11-1 when it scores more than 68.

It’s going to be a fight to get points, but the Buckeyes will go on a little burst in the second half to finally start getting control. Maryland won’t hit its free throws when it counts.

Michigan State vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

The Spartans are hitting from the outside.

They don’t take a ton of threes, and they don’t rely on the outside shot to get by, but it’s a big deal when they’re on – they’re making them when they’re taking them lately.

They connected on half of their threes in the wins over Wisconsin and Michigan, and were over 40% in the wins over Nebraska and Minnesota.

This isn’t a great shooting Maryland team, and it’s not going to have a whole lot of luck on the inside. They’ve been doing okay lately, but the Michigan State defense is able to clamp down even though it doesn’t force a whole slew of mistakes.

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Maryland Will Win

About those Michigan State threes, they’re 12-0 when they make 39% or more, and 4-5 when they don’t.

Maryland has only allowed teams to hit 39% or more six times. That hasn’t been a predictor for Terp success, but again, it’s a big deal for the Spartans.

Michigan State has a weird way of going dead cold for stretches. If they’re not making up for the off shooting with lots of rebounds, there’s a problem.

Maryland is good on the glass, they’re solid on the line, and outside of the struggles at Indiana a few days ago, it’s been good from inside the arc and doing a nice job of getting to the rim.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

This is a dangerous game for Michigan State. It’s the third road game in the last four dates, it’s coming off the blowout over Michigan, and it’s been scuffling a little bit lately on this 2-2 run.

Maryland isn’t going to beat the Spartans with the three, but they have to match up well on the inside. That’s going to be a problem.

Michigan State will survive, but barely.

Previewing No. 23 Wisconsin Vs. Maryland

The No. 23 Wisconsin Badgers (12-2) are back on the road Sunday where they will take on the (8-6) Maryland Terrapins.

The No. 23 Wisconsin Badgers (12-2) enter Sunday’s contest against Maryland (8-6) one a four game winning streak.

Maryland on the other hand had lost their last two games to Big Ten opponents Iowa and Illinois.

It’s been an up and down season for the Terrapins who saw their long-time head coach Mark Turgeon step down back in early December.

Maryland still has yet to win a game in Big Ten play, and has won just three game’s over KenPom top 100 teams (Vermont, Richmond, and Florida).

Meanwhile, National Player of the Year contender, Johnny Davis enters the game having scored 20+ points in each of his last six games – and leading a young Badgers team that’s really beginning to play some of their best basketball.

Greg Gard had a 6-4 record against Maryland for his career.

Notable KenPom Rankings:

Wisconsin: 29th ranked team, 36th in ADJ Defense, 2nd in turnover%.

Maryland: 63rd ranked team, 269th in 3P%, 61st in ADJ Defense.

Maryland projected starters:

Guard: Fatts Russell (12.5 ppg, 3.7 apg)

Guard: Eric Ayala (15.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg)

Forward: Hakim Hart (9.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg)

Forward: Donta Scott (11.7 ppg, 7.1 rpg)

Forward: Qudus Wahab (9.4 ppg, 7.0 rpg)

Wisconsin projected starters:

Guard: Chucky Hepburn (7.6 ppg, 2.1 apg)

Guard: Brad Davison (14.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg)

Guard: Johnny Davis (22.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg)

Forward: Tyler Wahl (9.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg)

Center: Steven Crowl (8.7 ppg, 4.4 rpg)

As Greg Gard has championed, there are no get right games in the Big Ten.

A road test against the Maryland Terrapins won’t be a walk in the park. The Terrapins are 48-16 against Big Ten schools since joining the league.

However, it would be really hard to pick against the Badgers who have found a healthy offensive balance between pushing the pace and running their half-court sets.

The Badgers remain undefeated this season (12-0) when scoring 61 or more points, while losing both of the games in which they failed to reach that number.

Maryland is 0-5 this season when scoring 66 points or fewer, and the visiting Badgers defense allows just 64.6 points per game on the season.

A big-time Wisconsin in-state class of 2020 target intends to transfer from Maryland

A big-time Wisconsin in-state class of 2020 target intends to transfer from Maryland

Wisconsin basketball’s class of 2020 finished the recruiting cycle ranked No. 34 in the nation and No. 5 in the Big Ten. The class ended up including Johnny Davis, Ben Carlson, Steven Crowl, Lorne Bowman and Jordan Davis. It’s early in the 2021-22 season and we’re already seeing the group make a massive impact on the court—Jonathan Davis obviously being the most notable of those commits.

One of Wisconsin’s targets in the class was Milwaukee native James Graham, a four-star recruit who ended up committing to Maryland.

Well, his time at Maryland didn’t last long as Graham tweeted yesterday his intention to transfer.

Graham held offers from teams including Wisconsin, Maryland, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Oregon and Xavier. He averaged 4.6 minutes per game, 1.3 points, 1.2 rebounds and 0.1 assists in limited time over a year-plus with the Terrapins.

We’ll now see if Wisconsin pursues the former four-star recruit in the transfer portal.

WATCH: Classic Tom Izzo comes out in first round game against Maryland

Watch, Tom Izzo was not happy after a call made in Michigan State’s second-round game against Maryland.

[jwplayer LOzzVBvn]

Michigan State is in the midst of their first Big Ten Tournament game against Maryland. Foul problems have come early and often for the Spartans in this matchup against the Terrapins.

Tom Izzo, much like many Spartan fans watching the game, is not pleased with how the game is being officiated.

Tom Izzo didn’t hide his displeasure with a call made by Bo Boroski and you can watch it here:

Tom Izzo received a technical foul a few possessions later after another Boroski call.

Michigan State is locked into No. 9 seed in Big Ten Tournament

See who and when the Spartans will play in the Big Ten Tournament next week in Indianapolis.

[jwplayer LOzzVBvn]

A win over No. 2 Michigan on Sunday will be huge for the Spartans’ NCAA Tournament resume, but it won’t have any effect on where Michigan State lands in the Big Ten Tournament.

With Rutgers beating Minnesota and Indiana losing to Purdue on Saturday, the Spartans are officially locked into the No. 9 seed for the Big Ten Tournament next week. That means the Spartans will first take the floor next week at 11:30 a.m. ET on Thursday, but the opponent is still to be determined.

Entering Sunday, Rutgers currently holds the No. 7 seed and Maryland is right behind as the No. 8 seed. However, that could change depending on how Maryland’s game against Penn State and Iowa’s home match-up against Wisconsin plays out. Here’s what is in play to determine the Spartans’ draw in Indianapolis:

A win over either the Scarlet Knights or Terapins could be needed to lock up a spot in the NCAA Tournament for Michigan State. It would also mean a third match-up against the Wolverines in an eight-day span.

Here’s how the bracket currently looks entering the final day of the regular season:

Ohio State loses second-straight, this time to Michigan State. Three takeaways.

Ohio State couldn’t make the plays down the stretch to get another big road win at Michigan State. Here are three takeaways from the game.

We had ourselves a Big Ten Donnybrook in East Lansing tonight. Ohio State and Michigan State played one of those old-fashioned, slug ’em out conference games that others outside the Midwest like to criticize. And yeah, it was ugly, and even so much more so if you are a Buckeye fan because they came out on the losing end 71-67.

The loss most likely not only provides a mortal wound to OSU’s diminishing Big Ten regular-season championship hopes, but also puts a potential No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in jeopardy.

There is a lot to take from this game, and we’ll do our best to unpack it. Here are three takeaways from what we witnessed up in East Lansing Thursday night.

NEXT … Ohio State got bullied

Ohio State beats Indiana, moves into virtual tie for first in Big Ten. Three takeaways.

Ohio State was able to win its sixth-straight game by taking care of business against Indiana. Here are three takeaways from the game.

Your Ohio State basketball team is officially in first place in the Big Ten, at least according to wins and losses. Technically speaking, Michigan remains in first place by winning percentage, with Illinois just behind, but all three teams are locked in at the top of the league because of a different number of games played.

The reason OSU has vaulted all the way to the top of the league is because it just knocked off Indiana for its sixth-straight win and ninth in its last ten. All of this, in a league that is the deepest and toughest to navigate in the country. This game against the Hoosiers, unlike some in the recent past, was rather free of drama with a 78-57 comfortable win.

Here are three things we observed as takeaways in this one.
