How to watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe in story order

Story order is the only way to do a rewatch of the MCU.

The latest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe hits theaters on November 11th with the highly anticipated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. If you are looking to get into it for the first time or just conduct your most recent rewatch, we’re here to help with how to watch all 36 entries of the MCU timeline in chronological order.

[Some light spoilers for the MCU … beware]

Some will just jump right in and watch in the order the movies were released (aka Release Order), but I am a massive proponent of going in chronological order (aka Story Order). There aren’t many big changes, but it allows the Infinity Saga to flow much more smoothly (and helps keep the journey of the Infinity Stones in order).

Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain Marvel jump to the front of the queue for two of the biggest changes. First Avenger is set in the 1940s during World War II, and Captain Marvel takes place in the grunge-era 1990s. The best adjustment in going Story Order is probably bumping Black Widow up into the timeline where it fits — after Captain America: Civil War — rather than having it fall into its Release Order position — after the events of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

After Endgame, the rigidity of order loosens up slightly as a lot of the Disney+ shows take place concurrently, so I listed them here how I prefer to watch.

Please note that I did not include Agents of Shield or any of the Marvel Netflix shows as the answer as to whether they are OFFICIALLY canon or not is pretty hazy. The introduction of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdoch (aka Daredevil) and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin has blurred that line a little as they reprise their roles from the Daredevil Netflix series.

Here is the way to go if you want to consume the MCU in Story Order:

  1. Captain America: The First Avenger
  2. Captain Marvel
  3. Iron Man
  4. Iron Man 2
  5. The Incredible Hulk
  6. Thor
  7. The Avengers

  17. Black Panther

We handicapped the God-butchering action ahead of Thor: Love and Thunder with 7 fake prop bets

Which character is most likely to get a cameo, how many people will Mjolnir deem worthy and more!

The God of Thunder is finally making his triumphant, solo film return to the big screen five years after Thor: Ragnarok redefined what the Marvel Studios series could look like.

Thor: Love and Thunder crashes into theaters on Friday, July 8 with an all-star cast headed by Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Chris Pratt, Christian Bale and Russell Crowe. Given how well received Ragnarok was after director Taika Waititi took over the franchise, his follow up in the series has been among the most highly-anticipated MCU films to date.

So the BetFTW staff put together a list of the things we’re looking forward to the only way we know how: with odds we made up to add another layer of fun to our viewing(s).

Don’t worry, no spoilers below.

It’s a good week to be a Saints fan. Between Zaila Avant-garde’s historic victory at the Scripps National Spelling Bee and Dustin Poirier’s win over Conor McGregor at UFC 264, Louisianans are on the rise. New Orleans’ own Anthony Mackie, a leading actor for Marvel Studios’ “Avengers” projects, was hosting the 2021 ESPY’s Awards with Avant-garde in attendance while Poirier was pummeling McGregor on Saturday night.

And Mackie didn’t let the moment pass by unnoticed. He congratulated Avant-garde on her success while also recognizing her skills as a basketball prodigy and owner of multiple world records,

“I’m most excited tonight because one of my favorite athletes from New Orleans is in the house. Sorry Drew Brees, you’re old news, alright” Mackie joked. “You don’t count no more. I’m talking about the spelling bee champ.”

But he didn’t let the opportunity for some ribbing to pass by, either. From one New Orleanian to another, he quipped: “That’s NOLA’s finest right there, but I’ma let you pass for being from across that river though, we don’t got to talk about that.” For those not in the know, that’s a friendly jab in the West Bank-East Bank rivalry, referring to the opposing sides of the Mississippi River — with Mackie doing his part to represent his Mid-City roots in the East.

Still, it’s great to see them all thriving in a big spot. Avant-garde, 14, has already lived up to an all-time-great name with her accomplishments but has a bright future with all of the college scholarship offers pouring in. Mackie is lined up to star in many more feature films. And Poirier wasn’t satisfied with a win by doctor’s stoppage against McGregor; he’s already eager to meet his rival again in the octagon. The Saints themselves might be keeping quiet ahead of training camp, but the people who make their fanbase great are as busy as ever.
