College Football Rankings, Season Predictions: Sun Belt Spring Version 2022

Sun Belt spring football rankings and predictions with best and worst case scenarios for every team

Sun Belt college football rankings and predictions with the realistic best and worst case records and quick analysis – the 2022 spring version.

The Sun Belt just got a whole lot bigger, cooler, and more interesting with a shocking expansion that should take the conference up another level.

FCS powerhouse James Madison gets to join in right away, and Marshall, Old Dominion, and Southern Miss were able to leave Conference USA and get in for the 2022 football season.

Here’s the problem – several Sun Belt programs that made strides last year are going to have tougher schedules to deal with. Several teams should be better, but might not have the results to show it.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Charleston Southern men, Coastal Carolina women crowned champions at Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Collegiate

The True Blue Golf Course in Myrtle Beach hosted the Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Collegiate.

The Golfweek/Any Given Tuesday Collegiate featuring men’s and women’s teams from across the country was held at True Blue Golf Course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Ten men’s teams and 17 women’s teams teed it up as they all prepare for the final stretch of the regular season and postseason play.

This was the first time Golfweek and Any Given Tuesday have teamed up but event was about much more than golf. Any Given Tuesday has spearheaded fundraising efforts for the families of those lost and injured in the tragic University of the Southwest vehicle crash. Any Given Tuesday has helped raise funds, one birdie at a time, with many teams, coaches and players pledging $1 for each circle on their card.

One player who helped that effort greatly was Marshall’s Tyler Jones. The junior broke the school’s scoring record of 63 that was set in 1958 by Linden Meade. Jones posted a 10-under 62 in Wednesday’s final round, catapulting him from T-6 and six back of the lead, to co-medalist honors.

“He was 4 under through six and I could just see that he had ‘it’,” Marshall head coach Matt Grobe told Golfweek. “You could tell he was kind of in a zone, so as a coach, you try to stay out of his way.”

Earning co-medalist honors was Gardner-Webb’s Zack Byers. The senior out of Shelby, North Carolina, held a three-shot lead over the field heading into Wednesday’s final round. A pair of 3-under 69s gave Byers a small cushion to build upon.

Byers, who shot a 5-under 67, appeared to have a solo win in the bag but a bogey on the par-4 12th, his final hole, slid him into a tie for first alongside Jones.

Claiming the men’s team title was Charleston Southern. The Buccaneers saved their best for last, posting a tournament-best 7-under 281.

On the women’s side, it was another individual title was split.

Incarnate Word’s Ellen Nicholas and Coastal Carolina’s Tiffany Arafi shared the individual title with matching 4-under 212s.

For Arafi, the individual title aided in securing the Chanticleers the team championship and weighed down the team bus down just a bit more on their ride back to Conway, South Carolina.

“I hope it was what they needed to get confident, turn the corner, and finish strong,” Chanticleer head coach Katie Quinney told Golfweek.

Staving off a run from the Cardinals, Coastal Carolina was able to stop the bleeding at 10 over in the final round to hang on for a four stroke win over Incarnate Word.

With most teams facing just one or two regular season events left, everyone is making their final push to play their best golf come April and May. Golfweek amateur events pick back up this summer starting with the Golfweek Myrtle Beach Amateur at Prestwick Country Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina June 14-16. Marshall vs FIU Game Preview, C-USA Conference Tournament

Why FIU Will Win

The Golden Panthers are going to keep on shooting.

They might have issues turning the ball over, and the defense is too often a rumor, but they’re going to keep on firing from three.

They’re not great at hitting their shots, but they keep taking them to generate threes in bulk. Best of all, they’ve been able to beat Marshall twice even though they weren’t rolling from the outside.

On the flip side, Marshall can’t hit a thing from the outside – even though it takes a ton of threes – and it doesn’t do enough from the free throw line and from the field to make up for it.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Marshall Will Win

FIU doesn’t do anything from the free throw line, either.

It turns the ball over in bulk which doesn’t help an already suspect defense. No, Marshall doesn’t make threes – hitting just 30% – but it’ll keep bombing away to at least match FIU in outside shots. It could be a matter of quantity over quality here.

FIU has lost four straight with the offense flailing, there’s no consistency whatever, and …

Marshall vs FIU: What’s Going To Happen

FIU is just a bit better from three than Marshall is.

Neither team is anything special, but the Herd are having a hard time getting to 40% from the field, much less from three. FIU will come up with a few more free throws and few extra threes.

It won’t be easy, but it’ll be three in a row in the series against Marshall.

2022 College Football Schedules: All 131 Teams

Where Notre Dame, opponents rank in ESPN’s SP+ Rankings projection for 2022

Who is the most surprising to you?

The ESPN SP+ Rankings have grown in interest over the last few years as advanced analytics become more a part of college football not just for coaching staffs, but for fans as well.

If you’re unaware of what SP+ is, our colleagues at Buckeyes Wire gave this explanation earlier this week.

“A predictive formula Bill Connelly uses and includes returning production, recruiting, recent history and other data that — according to ESPN — are built as a “tempo and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. It is a predictive measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football … These are simply early offseason power rankings based on the information that we have been able to gather to date.”

So based off of that information, where does Notre Dame rank nationally and of significant interest, where do Notre Dame’s 2022 opponents rank in the first edition of the SP+ Rankings (subscription required) for this fall?

Notre Dame’s 2022 schedule and game-by-game predictions

It’s early but how do you see Notre Dame’s 2022 season going?

There, I did you a favor by keeping “way too early” out of the headline but the following is certainly a much too early look and prediction at how Notre Dame football will fare in Marcus Freeman’s debut season as head coach.

It’s a tough year for those who say Notre Dame doesn’t play anyone as Ohio State, Clemson, and USC all could very possibly be top 10 teams while a neutral site game against BYU and a trip to North Carolina don’t figure to be gimmes.

So how will Notre Dame fare in 2022?

Here is a much too early look at Notre Dame’s 2022 football season by going game-by-game.

Gerad Parker hired as Notre Dame tight ends coach

The Irish have a new offensive coach.

Marcus Freeman needed a tight ends coach to round out the offensive side of his staff. He has found one in Gerad Parker, who spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator and receivers coach at West Virginia. This will be Parker’s first time coaching tight ends since his time at Purdue, where he also served as interim head coach in 2016. He also has coached at Penn State, Duke, Cincinnati, Marshall, Tennessee-Martin and Kentucky, his alma mater where he was a graduate assistant.

Freeman, whose stops at both Purdue and Cincinnati overlapped with Parker’s, said the following:

“I have been fortunate enough to coach with Gerad previously in our careers. The energy he brings each and every day is contagious. It is part of what makes him a great leader. He is also a very detailed teacher and that combination of skills is going to make us a better program.”

Congratulations to Parker on coming to South Bend for his latest venture. Let’s hope the work he’s done with the Mountaineers’ receivers over the past couple of years can translate into success with the Irish’s tight ends.

Dana Altman earns 700th career win in style

Only 23 coaches in college basketball can say they have 700 career wins. Dana Altman is now part of that list.

It probably wasn’t how Oregon Ducks men’s basketball coach Dana Altman envisioned his 700th career win, but he’ll take it.

In a near-empty Pauley Pavilion, Oregon upset No. 3 UCLA 84-81 in overtime. The win was also his 290th victory as the Duck head coach in a career that began in 1989 at Marshall.

Beyond the milestone win for Altman, it was a much-needed victory for the Ducks, who have struggled early in the season. But they have finally put everything together and are the team everyone thought it would be when the year begin.

At 10-6 and 3-2 in conference, Oregon has that signature win that will make the NCAA tournament committee sit up and take notice. Fans or no fans, winning at Pauley against the No. 3 Bruins is no joke.

Jacob Young scored 19 of his 23 points after halftime and Will Richardson made several plays down the stretch to seal the deal. But it was the Ducks’ defense, an Altman staple, that was the difference as they denied the Bruins a good look at the buzzer to possibly force a second overtime period.

Now the Ducks will try to make it a road sweep as they will go for a second straight upset in Los Angeles. Oregon faces No. 5 USC Saturday for a scheduled 8 p.m. tip on Fox Sports 1.

Marshall vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Didn’t you used to be Marshall?

The Thundering Herd looked like they were back on track with a 2-0 start by a combined score of 93-17, but the turnovers, the turnovers, the turnovers.

The weren’t an excuse for the loss to Appalachian State – there weren’t any – but the Herd gave up three in each of the first three games and last week totally melted won with six in an inexcusable loss to Middle Tennessee.

Old Dominion hasn’t been bad – it suffered close losses to Buffalo and UTEP over the last two weeks – helped by a strong performance from the secondary. But …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Marshall Will Win

The Old Dominion defense isn’t taking the ball away. It has yet to come up with an interception, and Marshall could desperately use the break.

The turnovers have been everything to the season so far, but if it weren’t for them, things would be going okay. The offense is moving the ball, the pass rush is dominant, and the pieces are there to roll through a still-emerging Monarch team.

But …

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

How much do you trust Marshall to not screw this all up?

Old Dominion’s defense isn’t strong enough to hold up even if it does come up with a slew of takeaways. It might need six like Middle Tennessee was able to get last week, and that’s not happening.

Marshall will give it up twice, and that will be good enough to get by.

Notre Dame 2022 Schedule Nearly Finalized

Does anyone face a tougher schedule in 2022? Mercy!

It was made official on Tuesday that Notre Dame will take on BYU in the Shamrock Series game on October 8, 2022.  With that announcement we now know all 12 of Notre Dame’s opponents (officially) for the 2022 season.  We also know the dates for 10 of the 12 contests with only two remaining to be determined.

On paper it appears to be one of the best schedules in the nation and it starts with a massive week one matchup as the Irish head to Ohio State for the first time since 1995.

Here is the entire 2022 Notre Dame schedule:
