Steelers work out a tandem of safeties

Pittsburgh is looking for depth at safety this week.

According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Pittsburgh Steelers worked out a pair of free-agent safeties this week. According to Wilson, Pittsburgh worked out Marquise Blair and Eric Rowe.

Blair is in his fifth NFL season. He spent most of his career with the Seattle Seahawks but was with the Carolina Panthers in 2022. Blair missed all of 2023 with a designation of NFI.

Rowe is a former second-round pick and is in his 10th NFL season. Rowe was on the Steelers roster in 2023 and appeared in three games, all starts.

The Steelers currently sit at 7-2 and in first place in the AFC North. Pittsburgh is preparing to take on the Baltimore Ravens at home in Week 11.

Broncos worked out 2 defensive backs on Thursday

The Broncos worked out defensive backs Marquise Blair and Alex Johnson on Thursday.

The Denver Broncos brought in a pair of defensive backs for workouts on Thursday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire (via KPRC-TV’s Aaron Wilson).

The Broncos hosted Marquise Blair and Alex Johnson on a tryout basis. As of the time of this writing, neither defensive back has been signed.

Blair (6-1, 196 pounds) entered the league as a second-round pick out of Utah with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019. He spent the first three years of his career in Seattle, totaling 49 tackles and three pass breakups in 22 games (three starts) from 2019-2021.

After being waived by the Seahawks in 2022, Blair played in three games with the Carolina Panthers before later joining the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. He returned to Seattle this summer and spent part of the season the Seahawks’ practice squad before being released on Sept. 24. Blair is a safety who can also play as a slot cornerback.

Johnson (6-0, 185 pounds) is a rookie out of UCLA who spent time with the New York Giants this summer. He is a nickel cornerback who spent six seasons at the college level. Johnson grabbed five interceptions and broke up three passes in his final season with the Bruins last fall.

Broncos worked out two players

  1. DB Marquise Blair (Utah)
  2. DB Alex Johnson (UCLA)

The 53-man roster and 17-player practice squad are both full, so if the Broncos add a defensive back, they will need to make room on the team with a corresponding roster move.

RB George Holani and 14 others signed to Seahawks practice squad

RB George Holani and 14 others signed to Seahawks practice squad

The Seattle Seahawks have their official active roster set, and now they have their practice squad ready to go as well. Among those on the team are a few notable names, such as running back George Holani, wide receiver Easop Winston Jr., and linebacker Michael Barrett who the team acquired in a trade with the Carolina Panthers.

Keeping these players in the Seahawks system is certainly a win, especially in the case of Holani. He played well in the preseason, and could be a good insurance piece should something happen injury wise to any of Seattle’s top three running backs.

Here is the full list of the practice squad, as announced by the team via their Twitter page:

  • LB Michael Barrett
  • DT Kyon Barrs
  • S Marquise Blair
  • CB Artie Burns
  • T McClendon Curtis
  • T Garret Greenfield
  • RB George Holani
  • DE DeVere Levelston
  • TE Tyler Mabry
  • LB Patrick O’Connell
  • S Ty Okada
  • G Raiqwon O’Neal
  • T Max Pircher
  • WR Cody White
  • WR Easop Winston Jr.

Seahawks reuite with former 2nd round pick Marquise Blair, signed on Friday

Reunion in the Emerald City! The Seattle Seahawks announced on Twitter late Friday morning they will be bringing back a familiar face. Defensive back Marquise Blair, who was the No. 47 overall selection in the 2019 NFL draft, is returning to Seattle. The Seahawks signed the former Utah Ute after passing a physical with them this week.

Taken in the second round, Blair provided some boom back to Seattle’s secondary. His best year with the Seahawks was his rookie campaign in 2019, where he played in 14 games – of which he started three of them. He recorded 32 tackles and forced two fumbles.

Unfortunately, he only ever played in eight more games for Seattle in his final two years with the team. Knee njuries took their tole on the young man, and he was eventually released during the 2022 offseason.

Blair found a temporary home with the Carolina Panthers, but only played in three games. His 2023 was lost due to an Achilles tear.

Now, he returns to the team that drafted him for a second stint. Clearly, he is healthy enough to perform at a level that warrants a shot at a potential second opportunity. He will likely be thrown into the mix to see if he can provide legitimate safety depth following the departures of Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams.

Panthers add three players to practice squad

The busy Panthers made three additions to their practice squad on Monday.

From firing a pair of defensive coaches to bringing quarterback Sam Darnold back to the active roster, the Carolina Panthers had themselves a busy Monday. But they didn’t stop maneuvering there.

The team also added three players to its practice squad—wide receiver Emeka Emezie, linebacker Kobe Jones and cornerback Gavin Heslop.

Emezie, a Waxhaw, N.C. native and Marvin Ridge Maverick, attended North Carolina State University from 2017 to 2021. There, he reeled in 229 receptions for 2,895 yards and 19 touchdowns over 62 games.

Jones, who played his college ball at Mississippi State University from 2017 to 2020, has appeared in one NFL game during his pro career. That outing came this season with the Green Bay Packers back in Week 8—where he played seven snaps on defense and seven on special teams against the Buffalo Bills.

Heslop is a second-year veteran, who played in three games for the Seattle Seahawks in 2021. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder recorded one tackle.

To make room for the trio, Carolina released quarterback Jacob Eason, safety Marquise Blair and defensive Delontae Scott from the practice squad.

Panthers elevate 2 players from practice squad for Week 5

The Panthers called up two players, including a former second-round pick, for their Week 5 tilt against the 49ers.

Between the loss of Jeremy Chinn and the questionable status of Xavier Woods, the Carolina Panthers may be running particularly thin at the safety position in Week 5. So, they’ve called up a reinforcement.

On Saturday, the team elevated two players from its practice squad—one of whom being defensive back Marquise Blair.

Blair, a University of Utah product, was drafted in the second round of the 2019 draft by the Seattle Seahawks. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder played in 22 games for Seattle before his release on Aug. 30.

He’d then be picked up by Carolina on Sept. 5 and added to their practice squad alongside receiver Preston Williams. Blair played in last week’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals, recording one tackle over 14 special teams snaps.

While head coach Matt Rhule did tell reporters on Friday that he expects Woods to suit up against the visiting San Francisco 49ers, at least Blair gives the defense a bit of insurance heading into the outing.

Joining Blair in the call-up is wideout Derek Wright, who comes in following the hamstring injuries to Laviska Shenault Jr.
