Panthers hold visit with former Raiders LB

The Panthers held a visit with former Raiders fifth-round pick Marquel Lee on Tuesday.

After moving defensive tackle Bravvion Roy to the injured reserve, the Carolina Panthers opened up yet another spot on their active roster. So between the (hopefully temporary) losses of Roy and wideout Andre Roberts before him, the team is now down to 51 men.

Can Marquel Lee fulfill an underdog role and eventually fill one of those voids?

Well, if he does, the 26-year-old linebacker has taken the first step at doing so. Lee, per the league transaction, had a visit with the Panthers on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound linebacker spent four years at nearby Wake Forest University—where he totaled 291 combined tackles, 14.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and two passes defensed over 46 contests. He was selected as a member of the 2016 All-ACC Second-team for his standout senior campaign.

Lee would then be drafted in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft by the then Oakland Raiders. His first stint with the Raiders lasted from 2017 to 2019, one that saw him rack up 104 tackles in 34 games.

After his release in August of 2020 and a short stay with the Buffalo Bills, Lee rejoined Oakland Las Vegas for the 2021 season. He’d appear in 11 games before signing back with Buffalo this summer.

Bills bring back another familiar face, sign LB Marquel Lee

#Bills bring back another familiar face, sign LB Marquel Lee:

Players keep on circling their wagons back to western New York.

That continued on Friday with linebacker Marquel Lee.

On Friday, the Buffalo Bills announced that Lee had signed with the team once again. He was inked to a one-year deal. Lee’s agent first noted his signing via social media.

Lee, 26, spent last offseason in Buffalo. He was released during the team’s final roster cuts at the end of training camp.

Originally a fifth-round pick by the Raiders in 2017, Lee re-signed with Las Vegas after leaving Buffalo last year. Now he returns.

Along with Lee, some more prominent former players had paved the way for him to give the Bills another shot. Earlier in the week, defensive linemen Jordan Phillips and Shaq Lawson were signed by Buffalo once again.

Throughout his career, injuries have unfortunately followed Lee.

He has played 45 games with 19 starts, posting 115 tackles, six tackles for a loss and three quarterback hits. Lee has only played in all 16 games once in his career in 2018.

With the Bills, Lee will likely have a chance to play a special teams role. He featured in 80 percent of the Raiders’ special teams snaps just last season.

With AJ Klein released in a salary cap move recently, Lee could also possibly find a spot on the depth chart as a depth defender.

Raiders add OT Jackson Barton off Giants practice squad, release LB Marquel Lee

Raiders add T Jackson Barton off Giants practice squad, release LB Marquel Lee

With the rash of injuries on the Raiders offensive line, reinforcements are needed. Even with Alex Leatherwood practicing full with his back injury, the Raiders made sure they got themselves some depth today by adding free agent Jackson Barton to the mix.

The 6-7, 302-pound tackle comes off the practice squad from the New York Giants. Barton was a originally a seventh round pick in the 2019 draft out of Utah by the Indianapolis Colts. He was later signed by the Chiefs and waived and picked up by the Giants. He has yet to appear in an NFL game.

Barton becomes the fourth tackle on the roster along with Leatherwood, LT Kolton Miller, and swing tackle Brandon Parker.

In a corresponding move, the Raiders released linebacker Marquel Lee who had just been signed off of the practice to the active roster prior to last Sunday’s game in Pittsburgh. Lee is a former Raiders fifth round pick out of Wake Forest.

Raiders place QB Marcus Mariota on IR, sign LB Marquel Lee off practice squad

Raiders place QB Marcus Mariota on IR, sign LB Marquel Lee off practice squad

Several serious injuries occurred in the season opener for the Raiders. Today QB Marcus Mariota became the third player to land on injured reserve from injuries suffered in the game. He aggravated a quad injury that had been bothering him throughout the preseason and how will be gone at least the next eight weeks.

Mariota joins guard Denzelle Good and defensive tackle Gerald McCoy who were also placed on IR this week. Mariota was the first of the three to suffer his injury. It was on the third play of the game when Mariota came in the game at QB and Derek Carr split out wide. Mariota kept the ball on a read option and sprinted up the middle for a 31-yard gain.

It was just the kind of play Jon Gruden had been hoping to see from Mariota, adding an extra wrinkle to his offense. And it will be the last time he sees such a play from Mariota for a while.

This is the second season in a row with the Raiders that Mariota has spent the first part of season on injured reserve. Last season he wasn’t activated until week ten and didn’t see the field until week 14 when he came in for an injured Derek Carr early in their game against the Chargers.

To fill the roster spot, the Raiders signed linebacker Marquel Lee from the practice squad. Lee was a fifth round pick by the Raiders in 2017. He spent three seasons with the Raiders and was cut prior to the 2020 season and hasn’t played an NFL snap since. He spent this offseason with the Bills before being waived prior to the season and signing back with the Raiders onto the practice squad.

The team also announced that they have elevated G Lester Cotton and RB Trey Ragas from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Steelers.

Buffalo Bills activate Marquel Lee off COVID-19 list

#Bills activate Marquel Lee off COVID-19 list, release one:

Linebacker Marquel Lee was activated off the Reserve/COVID-19 list by the Buffalo Bills. The team announced the transaction on Thursday.

Lee was placed on the designation on Aug.10.

With his removal from the COVID-19 list, the Bills now have no players on the designation at this time. Earlier in training camp, offensive linemen Ike Boettger and Dion Dawkins were both previously on it.

Earlier this offseason, Lee signed with the Bills after last playing with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019. He could find his way onto the final 53-man roster if he impresses as a depth defender and potential special teams contributor.

In a corresponding move, offensive lineman Steven Gonzalez was released by the Bills to make room for Lee on the team’s active roster.

Currently the Bills are allowed to carry 86 total players until Tuesday.

That date is the NFL’s next deadline for a roster cutdowns. In total, the Bills will have to release another five players that day before having to trim all the way down to 53 players in the ensuing week.

Buffalo Bills place Marquel Lee on Reserve/COVID-19 list

#Bills place Marquel Lee on Reserve/COVID-19 list:

Linebacker Marquel Lee has been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Tuesday. The team announced the transaction just prior to the start of Day 11 of training camp practice.

At this time, the Bills have simply just announced the roster move. It is unclear if Lee tested positive for COVID-19 or if his placement on the designation had to do with a close contact or other precautionary measures.

Currently the only other Bills player on the COVID-related list is offensive lineman Dion Dawkins.

Dawkins has yet to practice during training camp because of the designation, however, fellow offensive lineman Ike Boettger also landed on it at the same time as Dawkins.

That’s important to note because Boettger returned to practice last week, but during the practice prior to returning, Boettger was spotted on the sideline watching the workout.

On Monday, Dawkins was doing just that, so he could be back on the field at some point this week.

Considering the announcement that Lee went on the list, along with Jerry Hughes coming off of the NFI list, one could assume Dawkins will not be practicing on Tuesday. This week is still certainly likely, though.

As for Lee, his time sideline will depend on whether or not he had a positive test result.

Earlier this offseason, Lee signed with the Bills last playing with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019. He could find his way onto the final 53-man roster if he impresses as a depth defender and potential special teams contributor.

Bills sign LB Marquel Lee to one-year deal

LB Marquel Lee signs one-year deal with Buffalo Bills.

March 31 is a date for linebackers in Buffalo Bills land. The team has announced the signing of linebacker Marquel Lee on Wednesday. He’s inked a one-year deal in Buffalo.

That announcement comes only a few hours after the Bills confirmed a report that they had signed another linebacker: Tyrell Adams.

Both players appear to be depth options behind starters Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano and might have an opportunity to play special teams as well.

Interestingly, the two have very different recent pasts. In 2020, Adams had a career year with the Texans. Lee on the other hand did not play last season.

He landed on the PUP list during 2019’s training camp and then was waived following a physical that August. From 2017 until then, Lee suited up for the Raiders, who made him a fifth-round pick out of Wake Forest.
