Alabama football countdown: 36 days until kickoff

We are 36 days from Alabama football kicking off its season on the road against the Missouri Tigers to start a 10-game, SEC only schedule.

There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding college football over the last couple of weeks, but as of right now, the season still looks like it’s a go for the SEC, ACC and Big 12.

So, what does that mean? It means that we can continue the Countdown to Kickoff en route to the Crimson Tide — and the rest of the SEC — getting things underway on Sept. 26.

With it now being Aug. 21, we are officially 36 days away from the start!

After the departure of linebacker Markail Benton earlier in the offseason, the No. 36 has now been left to two walk-on players. Redshirt junior Bret Bolin, a wide receiver out of Lemont (Ill.), wears it for the offense while Jordan Parker, a sophomore defensive back from Phenix City (Ala.) wears it for the defense.

In February, Roll Tide Wire discovered that Benton was no longer listed on the team’s official roster.

At the time, many wondered if there was more to the story, or it was simply an error, especially since Alabama quickly added him to the online directory after many started realizing he was not on the online team roster.

Now we know why. And Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated on this story.

Markail Benton saw his first significant action for the Alabama defense during the 2019 season, but that impact for the Crimson Tide could be short-lived.

On Tuesday night, Roll Tide Wire discovered that Benton was no longer listed on the team’s official roster.

Now, the reason for his absence could be an error, as there has been nothing reported of Benton being in the transfer portal. But it is something to monitor, as the removal of a player usually means a departure is on the horizon.

The good news for Alabama is the inside linebacker position looks to be in good hands, regardless of Benton’s status on the team for 2020.

Dylan Moses chose to forgo the NFL draft to return for his senior season, while two more impressive newcomers, Demouy Kennedy and Jackson Bratton, were adding in the 2020 recruiting class.

We’ll be sure to update as we learn more about the reason behind Benton’s absence from the current roster!
