Where Alabama ranks in ESPN’s updated Basketball Power Index

Despite a tough loss to Gonzaga, Nate Oats and Alabama still have one of the best resumes in the entire country according to ESPN’s BPI.

[autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] and the Alabama men’s basketball team are fresh off a 100-90 loss to the Gonzaga Bulldogs this past weekend.

Despite the loss, the Crimson Tide still has one of the best early-season resumes in the entire country,

Now it is time to see how that loss to Gonzaga affected Alabama in the latest update of ESPN’s Basketball Power Index.

According to ESPN, the BPI is a “measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of performance going forward. BPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Strength of Record (SOR) is a measure of team accomplishment based on how difficult a team’s W-L record is to achieve. Game predictions account for opponent strength, pace of play, site, travel distance, day’s rest, and altitude, and are used to simulate the season 10,000 times to produce season projections. Numbers update daily.”

Here is a breakdown of where Alabama ranks in the BPI.

Turnovers plague Alabama as Gonzaga drops the Tide 100-90

Turnovers cost the Tide as Gonzaga drops Alabama 100-90.

[autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] and the Alabama men’s basketball team dropped just their second game of the season on Saturday at the hands of No. 15 Gonzaga 100-90.

Scoring was obviously not an issue for the Crimson Tide offense but turnovers once again plagued Alabama.

Despite freshman sensation Brandon Miller dropping an astounding 36 points, Alabama’s 21 turnovers ended up being the difference in the contest.

Alabama’s second-leading scorer Mark Sears also had an off day from the field shooting just 1 of 8 and finishing with five points, around 10 less than his season average.

Gonzaga senior forward Drew Timme was dominant in the paint dropping 29 points and hauling in 10 rebounds.

The Crimson Tide move to 9-2 on the season and will wrap up the non-conference slate next Tuesday when they play host to Jackson State.

FINAL: Brandon Miller leads Alabama past Memphis 91-88

Alabama takes down Memphis 91-88 to improve to 9-1 on the season.

In what was a back-and-forth contest between two polar opposite teams, [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide were able to outlast Penny Hardaway and the Memphis Tigers, 91-88.

Alabama was led by freshman sensation Brandon Miller who poured in 24 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Memphis senior guard Kendric Davis led all scorers with 30.

After a defensive battle in the first half, the two squads caught fire in the second half with both teams dropping 55 points in the final 20 minutes.

Things won’t get any easier for the Tide as they will make the short trip to Birmingham on Saturday to take on No. 15 Gonzaga.

Ohio Bobcats transfer Mark Sears commits to Alabama MBB

Alabama men’s basketball earned a commitment from Ohio transfer guard Mark Sears

The Crimson Tide earned a commitment from Ohio Bobcats guard Mark Sears, who entered the transfer portal after a solid season with Ohio in 2021-22.

Sears hails from Muscle Shoals, AL, and averaged 19.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game in 35 games for the Bobcats as a sophomore. He started in every game during the 2021-22 season.

As a freshman, the 6-1 185-pound Sears averaged 8.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

According to 247Sports, Sears is ranked as the No. 8 player available in the NCAA transfer portal.

Alabama head coach Nate Oats definitely filled a need with this transfer addition. The Crimson Tide will lose Jaden Shackelford and Jahvon Quinerly (likely), and Oats says he has a “gut feeling” that freshman JD Davison will go pro, as well. The thing these guys all have in common is that they played guard.

Keon Ellis has not made his intentions clear at this point, while the NBA Draft declaration deadline is set for April 24.

Sears made his transfer destination known via a Twitter post to his account.

With many unknowns still hovering around the Alabama basketball program, it’s good to get some solid news regarding a guy that will for sure be wearing a Crimson uniform in 2022-23.
