Mark Richt’s career in photos

Former Georgia football head coach Mark Richt went 145-51 during 15 seasons at UGA. Richt won two SEC titles and two Sugar Bowls

Former Georgia Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt coached at Georgia from 2001 to 2015 before the Bulldogs hired Kirby Smart. Following Richt’s time at Georgia, he coached at Miami from 2016 to 2018. Richt also played quarterback at Miami from 1979-1982.

During Richt’s 15 seasons at Georgia, he went 145-51. Richt helped Georgia make a bowl game during every season throughout his career in Athens. Richt is a member of the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame Class.

Richt helped Georgia win SEC championships in 2002 and 2005. The Bulldogs also appeared in the 2003, 2011 and 2012 SEC title games.

Richt never had an awful season during his time at Georgia. He helped stabilize the Georgia program after the Bulldogs had inconsistent play in the 1990s. Richt paved the way for Georgia to win back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022.

Bulldog fans always watched a bowl game during Richt’s consistent time as Georgia’s head coach. Mark Richt began working as a college football analyst for the ACC Network and ESPN in 2019. In 2021, Richt announced he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Here’s a look at Richt’s career in photos from earliest to most recent.

Mark Richt shares heartfelt message ahead of Georgia-Florida State

The Orange Bowl is here. No. 6 Georgia (12-1) will take on No. 5 Florida State (13-0) from Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium at 4 p.m. ET, televised on ESPN.

Former Georgia head coach and College Football Hall of Fame member, Mark Richt, has a special connection to both programs.

Before Richt’s 15-year stint in Athens, he served as an assistant under Hall of Fame head coach Bobby Bowden at Florida State, winning two national championships.

Richt, now an analyst for ACC Network, shared a heartfelt social media post on Saturday morning ahead of kickoff.

It’s safe to say Richt will find peace with whoever walks away with a win tonight.

Mark Richt: ‘The score didn’t indicate how badly they beat them’

Richt believes the score didn’t indicate how badly Clemson beat South Carolina.

Clemson took down South Carolina 16-7 Saturday, getting revenge for their loss last season while also ending the Gamecocks’ season.

Following the game, former Miami and Georgia head coach and current ACC analyst Mark Richt shared his feelings on the game he watched. Richt liked what he saw from the Tigers, even with the passing attack struggling.

“Clemson only threw for 100 yards,” he said. “It wasn’t a pretty game offensively. But what do you do to win a game like that? You run the rock. They ran the rock. You play great defense. They played unbelievable defense. And you just secure the victory. Even at the end of the game, just take a knee at the end of the game.”

According to Richt, the score didn’t truly indicate how badly the Tigers beat the Gamecocks on Saturday. Clemson dominated the matchup and proved to be the better team throughout almost the entirety of the game.

“Well, the bottom line is they whipped their tale. The score didn’t indicate how badly they beat them,” said Richt.

Clemson did what it needed to, and it was sweet revenge for Swinney and the program.

Former Georgia head coach March Richt, an ACC Network analyst, is still cracking up folks on TV.

Following Miami’s 28-20 double overtime win over Clemson on Saturday night, the ACC Network crew played a hilarious clip of Richt taking a football to the face.

Richt holds a segment each week called ‘Beak of the Week’, which he uses to describe something that “makes me crazy”. Richt is one of the most beloved coaches in Georgia history and for good reason.

Richt made headlines last week when he announced the Chick-fil-A Dawg Bowl, which is helping raise money for Parkinson’s and Crohn’s disease research.

Richt suffers from Parkinson’s disease and his granddaughter, Jaydn, suffers from Crohn’s disease.

The event was held last week and surpassed its goal of $750,000. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and a large group of players were in attendance.

Mark Richt and Terrence Edwards to be inducted into Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame

Former UGA head coach Mark Richt and Terrance Edwards will be inducted into the Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame this year in Jacksonville.

Former head coach Mark Richt and former receiver Terrence Edwards are set to be inducted into the Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame next week in Jacksonville. The two are the newest members set to be recognized during one of the best rivalries in the SEC.

This honor is one of many Richt has received since retiring from the sport in 2018. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame this year. He had a record of 145-51 during his time at Georgia. Richt is also highly-regarded off the field with his contributions to researching Parkinson’s and Crohn’s disease.

Edwards is the other Bulldog inductee with Richt. Edwards had a very successful four-year career with the Bulldogs from 1999 to 2002. He holds multiple receiving records such as the career receiving yards with 3,093 and career touchdowns with 30. Edwards was in the NFL for a short stint, but really found his footing in the CFL. In 2017, he was inducted into the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame.

Tight end Brock Bowers is the player closest to breaking one of Edwards records, receiving touchdowns. Bowers likely will not come close to that record as he underwent surgery on his ankle that will take him out for much of the rest of the regular season.

Kirby Smart updates Georgia’s injury situation, previews Kentucky

Kirby Smart provided injury updates and talked about Kentucky’s impressive team entering Georgia’s Week 6 game with the Wildcats.

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart was not happy with how the Bulldogs’ run defense performed last week against Auburn. Georgia’s run defense will face another tall task in Week 6 at home against Kentucky.

The Wildcats are undefeated and are coming off a 33-14 home win over Florida. Kentucky utilized a heroic effort from star running back Ray Davis to crush the Gators’ will. Davis, who gained 280 rushing yards and scored four touchdowns last week, looks to continue his stellar season against Georgia.

Georgia’s 27-20 win over Auburn featured some silver linings. The Bulldogs learned Carson Beck can play well in a hostile road environment, but, more importantly, Georgia walked away with a win.

Miami Hurricanes honoring Mark Richt in Week 3

The Miami Hurricanes are honoring former Georgia Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt in Week 3 of the 2023 college football season.

Mark Richt coached at Georgia from 2001 to 2015 before the Bulldogs hired Kirby Smart. Following Richt’s time at Georgia, he coached at Miami from 2016 to 2018. Richt also played quarterback at Miami from 1979-1982.

Mark Richt will serve as an honorary captain for Miami’s home game on Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. ET against Bethune-Cookman. Richt is a member of the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame Class.

The National Football Foundation’s Steve Hatchell noted that Richt is a deserving member of the Hall of Fame.

During his 18 years as a head coach, Mark Richt established himself as one of the top coaches in the history of college football, winning nearly 73 percent of his games at Georgia and Miami (FL) and never failing to make the postseason and landing himself in the NCAA record books among the all-time winningest coaches.

Richt never had an awful season during his time at Georgia. Bulldog fans always got to watch a bowl game during his consistent time as Georgia’s head coach.

Mark Richt currently is a college football analyst for the ACC Network and ESPN.

The Hurricanes are off to a 2-0 start to the season. Miami got a big win at home against Texas A&M in Week 2.

Mark Richt believes Clemson is ‘only gonna feel good if they win this game against Florida State’

College football analyst and former coach Mark Richt said this about Clemson’s upcoming matchup with Florida State.

Former ACC and SEC head coach Mark Richt is a well-respected figure in college football, and he shared his opinions on the Tigers following their 66-7 win over Charleston Southern on Saturday.

Appearing on ACC Network’s “ACC Huddle,” Richt spoke about what is going on with the Tigers program. The win against CSU was a strong one, but Richt believes Clemson fans want more out of the team. According to the former coach, Tigers’ fans are only going to feel good if the Tigers win their matchup against Florida State in Week 4.

“Well, I think Clemson is only gonna feel good if they win this game against Florida State because right now they’re in pain,” said the former Miami and Georgia head coach.

“I mean, even the first couple of touchdowns of the game (vs. CSU), the fans that I heard were booing after that pick six. It’s not an exciting time for Clemson right now. The only game that will vindicate their season, in my opinion, is the game coming up at the end of the month here against Florida State. So, that’s going to be a monster for Clemson for a lot of reasons.”

There is no denying the game against Florida State is arguably the biggest of the year. Now outside of the AP Top 25, a matchup with No. 3 FSU at home should be an interesting one.

We can’t ignore that the Tigers need to take the season one game at a time, and their matchup against Florida Atlantic needs to be priority No. 1. Handle that game, and then we can worry about FSU.

Mark Richt approves of Georgia hiring Mike Bobo

Not surprisingly, former Georgia Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt approves of Kirby Smart hiring Mike Bobo as the program’s new OC.

Former Georgia Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt approves of Kirby Smart hiring Mike Bobo as the program’s new offensive coordinator.

Richt’s approval should be no surprise for Georgia fans. Mike Bobo coached under Mark Richt at Georgia from 2001 to 2014. Under Richt, Bobo coached quarterbacks from 2001 to 2006. Bobo was the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator from 2007 to 2014.

Mike Bobo returned to Georgia last season. He served as an offensive analyst for Georgia in 2022. Bobo replaces former Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who accepted the Ravens’ offensive coordinator job.

During the Mark Richt era, Mike Bobo coached talented offensive players like Todd Gurley, Matthew Stafford, Aaron Murray, and more. Perhaps Bobo and Richt’s best year in Athens came in 2012 when Georgia finished the season 12-2. Yes, Georgia lost a heartbreaker to Alabama in the 2012 SEC championship, but the Dawgs averaged 37.8 points per game and scored 28 points or more in every game except for two.

Mike Bobo returns to the offensive coordinator role in Athens after Georgia just won back-to-back national championships. Georgia has scored 24 or more points in 28 of its last 29 games. The Bulldogs will have the challenge of replacing starting quarterback Stetson Bennett this offseason.

Mike Bobo played quarterback at Georgia from 1993 to 1997. Mike Bobo, Kirby Smart, and Will Muschamp all played football at Georgia during the 1990s.

Mark Richt currently is a college football analyst for the ACC Network and ESPN.

Clemson got back in the win column on Saturday, bouncing back from an upset loss at Notre Dame a week earlier.

On ACC Network’s ACC Huddle show, analysts Eric Mac Lain, EJ Manuel, Mark Richt and Eddie Royal gave their takeaways from the 10th-ranked Tigers’ 31-16 victory over Louisville at Death Valley, where Will Shipley highlighted the win with a 25-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that saw him hurdle a defender at the 10-yard line and then split two other defenders en route to the end zone.

The epic play put Clemson up 24-7 less than five minutes into the second half and sent the Tigers on the way to their 39th consecutive home win, tying the 2005-11 Oklahoma Sooners for the ninth-longest home winning streak in FBS history.

“Man, he’s just a special talent,” Mac Lain, the former Clemson All-ACC offensive lineman, said of Shipley. “Bursting through the hole and jumping over a guy, and then showing some power, staying in the end zone. That’s a bad dude right there.”

Shipley finished with 97 yards and the touchdown on 19 carries, fellow sophomore running back Phil Mafah picked up 106 yards and a touchdown on 10 totes and quarterback DJ Uiagalelei ran for 32 yards and another score as the Tigers racked up 248 rushing yards on the day.

Meanwhile, Antonio Williams recorded 83 yards on a Clemson-freshman-record-tying 10 receptions and caught his third touchdown of the season on a 4-yard slant from Uiagalelei in the second quarter.

“I loved what I saw from the running game … which was huge for DJ,” said Royal, the former Virginia Tech standout and longtime NFL wide receiver. “Take a little bit of pressure off of him, and then Antonio Williams stepping up and really becoming that number one receiver that they need today.”

Uiagalelei completed 19 of his 27 passes against the Cardinals for 185 yards, accounted for two touchdowns and totaled 223 yards overall including a 6-yard catch from Williams in the third quarter.

Clemson (9-1, 7-0 ACC) opened the game with a 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive, which Uiagalelei started with two runs for 11 yards. The junior signal-caller later finished the drive with an 11-yard rushing touchdown, his career-high fifth of the season.

“DJ for whatever reason – I think it’s probably true with a lot of quarterbacks – everybody has a little bit of butterflies,” said Richt, the former Miami and Georgia head coach. “Sometimes you got a lot of butterflies, and just to take a shot or deliver a blow as a runner, sometimes it relieves that pressure and all the sudden, things start going well for you.

“But he made a lot of great throws today, a lot of great decisions, and he had a good bit of time in the pocket. But I think he played one of his cleanest games of the year.”

Meanwhile, Clemson’s defense registered two takeaways, four sacks and nine tackles for a loss against Louisville (6-4, 3-4), in addition to forcing five three-and-outs.

Linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. led Clemson in total tackles with 12, while linebacker Barrett Carter posted eight tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception. Defensive end KJ Henry chipped in six tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, a pass breakup and two quarterback hurries, and defensive tackle Bryan Bresee notched a sack, 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup.

“I felt like the Clemson defense really stepped up in this game because everybody watching the Notre Dame game, giving up over 200 yards rushing – extremely uncharacteristic for this Tiger defense,” said Manuel, the former Florida State and NFL quarterback. “But really just seeing KJ Henry get active, Bryan Bresee get active, and if they weren’t able to get home for sacks, knocking the ball down was huge, especially against (Louisville quarterback) Malik Cunningham.”

“Going back to the defense just for a moment, the good news was when they did get hit in the mouth, when they did get embarrassed, they turned it on and kicked some tail today, which was great to see,” Richt added.

Mac Lain added that Clemson’s defensive showing was the most important piece of Saturday’s game in his eyes.

“That was the aspect that we thought was going to be very dominant, elite, one-of-a-kind type stuff that quite frankly we have not seen this year yet,” he said. “They’re getting better, they’re figuring out, they’re putting stuff together. But why does it take a loss, why does it take an embarrassing loss to step up and show great effort and to show that you want to be there and dominate, but that’s what they did.”

Clemson clinched the ACC Atlantic Division outright with the victory, and while the Tigers are currently on the outside looking in at the College Football Playoff, another playoff appearance this season isn’t out of the question for Dabo Swinney’s team just yet.

After concluding the regular season with back-to-back home games against Miami and South Carolina over the next two weekends – beginning with Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. contest against the Hurricanes on ESPN – the Tigers will take on North Carolina in the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte on Dec. 3 (8 p.m., ABC).

“At the end of the day, a lot of goals still out there for Clemson,” Mac Lain said. “Chaos can happen, and who knows what you get. But I thought it was also great to see the confidence from DJ, to run him early, which really affected him in a positive way.”
