Oddsmakers weigh in on Nets’ next head coach

Could Kenny Atkinson stay in New York but coach for a different NBA team? Oddsmakers weigh in.

When 2019-20 comes to a close there’s no guarantee Jacque Vaughn will continue to be the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. When the organization announced he would take over for Kenny Atkinson, the Nets said Vaughn would hold the position for the rest of the season.

With that being the case, there’s been no shortage of speculation as to who will be the next Nets head coach. The NBA media has weighed in and thrown around names like Mark Jackson and Tyronn Lue, the latter of which coached Kyrie Irving in Cleveland.

Oddsmakers have taken those individuals being considered and set a field for who will be Brooklyn’s next head coach.

BetOnline.ag has Lue as the favorite at 5/4 odds, with Jackson right behind him (2/1). SportsBetting.ag also feels Lue (+125) and Jackson (+200) are the two leading candidates for next head of the Brooklyn Nets.

Both sites feature Vaughn on their list of candidates — 6/1 odds on BetOnline and +600 on SportsBetting — but he’s fourth in both cases, trailing Jeff Van Gundy (5/1 on BetOnline, +500 on SportsBetting).

Also featured on both lists are Tom Thibodeau (7/1, +700), Jason Kidd (9/1, +900) and Brooklyn’s director of player development and assistant coach Adam Harrington (10/1, +1,000).

Both sports betting sites also presented fans with a question about Atkinson’s future.

BetOnline asked “Will Kenny Atkinson be Knicks head coach for the 2020-2021 NBA Season?” The odds have been set a 1/1 for “yes” and 5/7 for “no.”

SportsBetting asked a similar one, though slightly different: “Will Kenny Atkinson be the Knicks next head coach?” The difference here is the Knicks could easily move on from Mike Miller before Atkinson is ready to take a new job. This line has been set at -120 for both “yes” and “no.”

Every name tied to Nets’ head coaching job

The Brooklyn Nets may have the pick of the litter when looking for a head coach, assuming Jacque Vaughn doesn’t keep the job after 2019-20.

Before Jacque Vaughn got the chance to be the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets for one game, everyone was talking about who would take over at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season.

Although the Nets didn’t officially throw the “interim” label in front of Vaughn’s new title, by stating he will “serve as head coach for the remainder of the season,” Brooklyn opened the floodgates for speculation about who could be the franchise’s head coach in the era of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

And there’s been no shortage of names thrown around in the chaos. Here’s everyone who’s been mentioned as a possible candidate for Kenny Atkinson’s old job:

Mark Jackson

Stephen A. Smith rattled off three names on Monday, and Jackson was one of them.

Rich Kleiman, Durant’s manager, is a fan of Jackson, as well. And as much as the Nets continue to say no players had a hand in Atkinson’s departure, they’re definitely going to play a part in finding his permanent replacement.

NBA fans crushed ESPN’s Mark Jackson for immediately questioning Zion Williamson’s weight

It didn’t take long for Mark Jackson to question Zion’s weight.

Zion Williams finally made his NBA regular-season debut on Wednesday night and it didn’t take long for ESPN’s Mark Jackson to question the size of Williamson’s body.

In fact, it happened under four minutes into the game.

Williamson has been out all season with a right knee injury. He started against the San Antonio Spurs in his debut and is expected to play short bursts of time as he works his way into the lineup.

He was subbed out before the 4-mintue mark and Jackson, who is easily one of the most dreadful announcers calling NBA games these days, questioned his weight and said he needed to drop some pounds. ESPN even showed a wild graphic about Zion’s weight:

Jackson also said he’d take Ja Morant over Williamson in the draft if they could re-do it all over again.

This was after just 4 MINUTES OF PLAYING TIME FOR ZION.

Fans rightly ripped Jackson, as well as Jeff Van Gundy, who added to the miserableness of this broadcast:

Oklahoma pass rusher Mark Jackson enters transfer portal, per report

Edge rusher Mark Jackson makes the third Sooners defender to enter the transfer portal this week.

Alex Grinch may get his own players playing time sooner than he realized.

Edge rusher Mark Jackson makes the third Sooners defender to enter the transfer portal this week. He joins linebackers, Levi Draper and Ryan Jones.

Jackson saw just four games in 2019 and played in 32 games total during his career at Oklahoma, including seven starts in 2018. In his four seasons, Jackson amassed 53 total tackles, eight tackles for loss and four sacks.

Jackson, a senior from Cibolo, Texas (Steele High School), was a four-star linebacker/rush end and signed as part of the 2016 class and saw playing time all four years at Oklahoma, but played in just four contests, allowing him to redshirt and gain an extra season of eligibility.

With Jackson being the third defender entering the portal, Grinch may be using his 2020 class earlier than he expected. The Sooners have two defensive tackles incoming as well as two defensive ends, including Reggie Grimes who has been a stand out at the Polynesian Bowl.

Mark Jackson could not be more wrong about LeBron-and-AD pick-and-roll

Expect the pick-and-roll to be a strength for LeBron James and Anthony Davis when the playoffs arrive for the Lakers, not a weakness.

The Los Angeles Lakers lost to the L.A. Clippers on Christmas, though stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis once more showed their potential.

This marked their second loss of the year to their crosstown rivals and their fourth consecutive game without a victory. It has been a tough stretch for the Lakers, as many predicted December would be due to the tough schedule.

James ended the game with 23 points as well as 10 assists while Davis put up 24 points. It was not enough to get the win, though, which is what many fans will remember from the game.

Others, however, may recall some strange comments from broadcaster Mark Jackson. He asserted that the Lakers did not have a pick-and-roll threat and asked broadcasting partner Jeff Van Gundy if he thought this would hurt their chances as contenders.

In fairness, despite the deadly combination, Los Angeles has not been a team that relies on the pick-and-roll very often.

But the Lakers (24.1 percent) have run this play more often this season than the Milwaukee Bucks (23.9 percent) as well as the Houston Rockets (22.0) and the Philadelphia 76ers (20.7 percent) so far in 2019-20. Note that these are four of the five top current betting favorites to win the NBA title in 2020.

For more on why this is absurd, just look at some of the comments from Davis from earlier this season. After the first game of the season, the big man spoke about the duo’s strength on offense and the challenges defenders will have when they are tasked to guard the pick-and-roll (via Lakers Nation):

“It’s tough to cover. You know you got a guy like him going downhill and a guy like me who’s me rolling… who’s a lob threat, you gotta pick your poison. He’s getting to his strong hand, he’s in the paint, and then you got me rolling behind. So either he’s gonna go finish, pocket pass, or a lob. Especially when it’s a clear side, it’s a tough play to guard.”

During their second regular-season game as teammates, James and Davis faced the Utah Jazz. Davis was guarded by Rudy Gobert, the back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year.

But because of their lethal presence as a pick-and-roll combo, Davis showed exactly why the front office sacrificed so much to acquire the superstar in the offseason. Watch him showcase his unique athleticism as a lob threat against Gobert:

When including passes like the one above, pick-and-roll sets from James have led to 380 points so far this season. That currently ranks ninth-best among all players in the Western Conference, per Synergy.

Before the season began, Pete Zayas (creator of Laker Film Room) described Davis as a “one-of-a-kind” threat in the pick-and-roll. Back in October, Sam Quinn also wrote about why the two of them would be so hard to contain (via CBS Sports):

“James has run pick-and-roll with dozens of centers in his career, and he had plenty of success with Chris Bosh and Kevin Love on pick-and-pops … But Bosh and Love simply took the open shot. Davis will too, some of the time. Some of the time, he will explode to the basket … And no defense in the NBA can be prepared for both, just as no defense in the NBA can defend James, Davis and three shooters at the same time.”

Zayas and Quinn have proven to be far more in touch than Jackson as Davis has scored 114 points in pick-and-roll sets for the Lakers — which currently ranks as the fifth-best in the West.

The big man has connected on 22-of-28 (78.6 percent) attempts specifically when he has rolled to the basket. Among all players who have had as many possessions, only two players in the league have been more accurate. Davis, similarly, is averaging 1.50 PPP on these opportunities — which ranks in the 90th percentile among all NBA players.

So when the postseason arrives, expect pick-and-roll to be a strength for the Lakers … not a weakness.

This post will be updated with a video of Jackson’s comments as soon as they are available

Under-the-radar candidates to replace David Fizdale as coach of Knicks

The New York Knicks have parted ways with head coach David Fizdale, leaving an opportunity for someone else to try fixing the franchise.

The New York Knicks have parted ways with head coach David Fizdale, leaving an opportunity for someone else to try fixing the franchise.

You have probably heard the big-name candidates like Mark JacksonJeff Van Gundy and Kenny Smith, especially since they all have big profiles now as regulars on television and have ties to either New York or the Knicks.

There are also the familiar faces who may get consideration and you’ve probably seen them other lists – coaches like Tom Thibodeau, Ty Lue, Jason Kidd, Mike Brown and Mark Woodson.

Other obvious names to consider are assistants Mike Miller (not the one who played in the NBA) and Pat Sullivan, both of whom are current assistants. Miller has been named the interim head coach, so it’s possible that he could take over permanently if he does a great job. New York also has two other assistants (Kaleb Canales and Jud Buechler) who will be asked to step up with Fizdale and former assistant coach Keith Smart gone.

Perhaps no one makes more sense than former NBA All-Star Chauncey Billups, who played for the Knicks in 2011 and has connections to the team’s front office (since he played under current GM Scott Perry in Detroit). However, he has maintained that he is more interested in becoming a front-office executive than coaching.

Regardless, this is a tough job and someone who has ties to their front office in some ways may have an advantage since this is such a crucial hire. Here are some under-the-radar candidates to keep an eye on as the Knicks conduct their coaching search.

Craig Robinson

Back in April 2018, Frank Isola actually mentioned Knicks executive Craig Robinson as a potential candidate for their head coaching vacancy before they eventually hired Fizdale (via New York Daily News):

“Robinson is another longshot Knicks candidate, according to a team source. The former Oregon State head coach — and brother of former First Lady Michelle Obama — currently serves as the Knicks’ VP of player and organization development.”

Robinson was the head coach at Oregon State from 2008 until 2014. During his playing days at Princeton, he was teammates with Steve Mills — the President of Basketball Operations for the New York Knicks. It is also worth mentioning that former NBA champion coach Dave Blatt was one of their teammates as well, though he is currently dealing with serious health issues.

Becky Hammon

Becky Hammon was once a fixture at Madison Square Garden, as she played for the New York Liberty from 1999 until 2006. The San Antonio Spurs assistant was once again promoted within the Spurs organization last year and has been a fixture on the sidelines during Summer League games for the team as well. She has received some consideration for other head coaching jobs recently, such as the Milwaukee Bucks’ and Detroit Pistons’ gigs. One of the looming questions for her is how long Gregg Popovich will remain head coach in San Antonio. If he decides to retire soon, she could be in line to take over as the next head coach of the Spurs.

Adrian Griffin

While he is currently the lead assistant coach for the defending champion Toronto Raptors, Adrian Griffin could make some sense for the New York Knicks. He attended college in New Jersey at Seton Hall University, where he is in their athletics Hall of Fame. During his final NBA campaign in 2007-08, he played 13 games for the Seattle Supersonics. Scott Perry was the Assistant General Manager for Seattle that season. Then, when Perry was the Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Orlando Magic in 2015-16, Griffin was one of the team’s assistant coaches.

Darvin Ham

Former NBA champion Darvin Ham played for the Detroit Pistons from 2003 through 2005. During that time, Perry served as the Director of Player Personnel for the organization, so he’s familiar with Ham. Ham has previously been in consideration for head coaching positions with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers. We also previously mentioned him as a potential candidate for the head coaching vacancy with the Atlanta Hawks in 2018 before the team went in a different direction.

Chad Forcier

Milwaukee Bucks assistant Chad Forcier was an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons (2001-03) when Perry was the team’s Director of Player Personnel. He later served as an assistant for the Orlando Magic, including the final year Perry was their assistant general manager (2016-17). He worked directly with Gregg Popovich when he was an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs and has served as a lead assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies. His ties to Perry and coaching experience could make him an interesting candidate to watch.
