Sean McVay sees similarities between Kamren Curl and Mark Barron

Kamren Curl reminds Sean McVay of Mark Barron, who was “like a silent assassin” on defense for the Rams.

Kamren Curl is a big part of the Los Angeles Rams’ rebuilt secondary, joining Chris Shula’s defense after four years in Washington. He may not have big turnover numbers in his career, intercepting only four passes in four years – all as a rookie in 2020 – but the Rams have high expectations for the young safety.

Sean McVay sees him as a defender who can play in multiple levels of the defense, whether it’s as a deep safety, in the box or over the slot.

While on Chris Long’s “Green Light” podcast, McVay compared Curl to another former Rams safety: Mark Barron. It’s not necessarily their play style that strikes McVay as being the same, but rather their awareness, intelligence and toughness.

“Kam Curl is a guy that, and I say this in the most complimentary way because I love this guy, he reminds me of Mark Barron,” McVay said. “Mark Barron was like a silent assassin. He takes everything in, he’s so smart, he’s tough as (expletive). Kam Curl has a similar demeanor and disposition as him. now, Mark will knock you – he was a total G, but I say that in terms of how much confidence I have in what Kam can be. I thought you saw him do a lot of stuff in Washington where he can come down and play man coverage on different guys at that two or three location. He’s violent with the way he attacks the football. I like the way that he’s a close-quarter tackler and then you can see him playing different parts of the field. We’ll ask him to do some different stuff, but the game makes sense to him. You ask him a question and he’s answering it. He picks and chooses his words wisely. This guy’s taking everything in, he knows what the hell’s going on and he’s a grown man.”

Barron played a few different spots in his Rams career, originally being drafted as a safety by Tampa Bay in 2012 when he was the seventh overall pick. In 2015, he transitioned to linebacker under head coach Jeff Fisher and defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, a spot he played for the remainder of his career. In two years under McVay, Barron had three interceptions, 148 tackles and two sacks. His versatility and position flexibility is what allowed him to have a career that spanned eight years.

This season, Curl will pair with either Quentin Lake or Russ Yeast as the starting safeties this year, but as McVay said, they’ll use him in different ways beyond just being a traditional safety. With a base value of only $8.75 million for two years, Curl could wind up being a steal for Los Angeles.

27 Days, 27 Picks: S Mark Barron

The Bucs didn’t have a first-round pick in 2013, so our next player in the 27 Days, 27 Picks series was the Bucs’ first of two first-round picks in 2012.

In 27 Days, 27 Picks, Bucs Wire will analyze the last 27 Tampa Bay Buccaneers first-round draft picks, one for each day leading up to the 2023 NFL draft. We’ll take a look at the player’s college stats, their pre-draft numbers (either via the NFL Combine or their Pro Day), their NFL stats, some player footage and analysis at the end on whether the pick itself was a good one.

The Bucs acquired Darrelle Revis in 2013 and thus didn’t have a first round pick, so we’ll skip a year to 2012 — where the team had two. The first of those two was used on Alabama safety and linebacker [autotag]Mark Barron[/autotag], who did not end up working out like the team had hoped.

Check out the rundown on Barron below:

Thin at linebacker, Raiders work out veteran LB Mark Barron

The Raiders have been losing linebackers left, right, and center of late. The skeleton crew remaining is in need of some reinforcements. Most have been hoping it would lead to the team signing KJ Wright — who was in for a workout recently — but that remains to be seen. In the meantime, the Raiders are doing their due diligence.

Monday the team hosted veteran LB Mark Barron for a workout.

The 31-year-old spent last season in Denver but didn’t play a game for the Broncos. After spending the first part of the season on IR, he was ultimately waived without playing a game.

The seventh overall pick in the 2012 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Bucs and Rams. He then played 15 games with the Steelers in 2019, starting nine.

As for the Raiders injuries, the list of those not injured might be smaller.

Nicholas Morrow went down with a foot injury last week in scrimmages with the Rams — an injury Jon Gruden said was concerning. Nick Kwiatkoski was already out injured, and then Darron Lee missed the game on Saturday with injury. Then in the game, Javin White was lost to a serious knee injury.

Kwiatkoski is expected to return soon and White was fighting to make the roster. It’s really the Morrow injury that makes finding a replacement a priority at this moment.

Broncos place 2 players on injured reserve

The Broncos have placed two defenders on injured reserve.

The Denver Broncos have placed coverage linebacker Mark Barron (hamstring) and defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker (calf) on injured reserve, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

Barron and Walker will be eligible to return after three weeks.

After placing wide receiver Courtland Sutton (knee) and defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones (knee) on IR earlier this week, the Denver Broncos now have four open spots on the 53-man roster.

One of the open spots will go to quarterback Blake Bortles, who is expected to sign later this week after clearing COVID-19 testing. Another spot will likely go to practice squad outside linebacker Derrek Tuszka.

With Walker and Jones both on injured reserve, Denver will likely call up a defensive lineman from the practice squad. DeShawn Williams is the most likely candidate to get called up to the active roster.

If he is called up, Williams will join a defensive line rotation that includes Shelby Harris, Mike Purcell, Jurrell Casey and McTelvin Agim. The Broncos usually dress five defensive linemen on game days and they carried six d-linemen on the 53-man roster through the first two weeks of the season.

The Broncos are looking to add a coverage linebacker.

The Denver Broncos brought in free agent linebacker/safety Mark Barron for a visit, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Denver needs to add a coverage linebacker after losing rookie Justin Strnad for the season. Strnad, who played safety in high school, was expected to get playing time in passing situations this year before suffering a wrist injury.

Barron (6-2, 230 pounds) entered the league as a first-round draft pick out of Alabama with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012. After three seasons with the Bucs, Barron was traded to the St. Louis (now Los Angeles) Rams.

Barron played with the Rams for five years before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers last offseason. Pittsburgh cut him earlier this year.

Last season, Barron totaled 74 tackles, three sacks, three pass breakups and one interception. Barron has recorded 657 tackles, 12 sacks, 41 pass breakups, nine interceptions and one safety in his eight-year career.

Breaking down the Tide’s 29 first-round NFL picks: Mark Barron

This time, we will be focusing on another former Alabama football star, Mark Barron.

Since Nick Saban’s arrival to Tuscaloosa in 2007, Alabama has not only become a team that has created a dynasty winning national championships, but it also has become a program that sends players to the NFL every year.

With the 2020 NFL Draft happening in less than a month, it’s the perfect time to start a new series in which we will go over all of the Tide’s 29 first-round draft picks. The first player we went over was Andre Smith, who finished his career at Alabama with 15 awards and honors and was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals as the No. 6 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. The second player we went over was former Alabama star linebacker Rolando McClain who would not only win many incredible awards while at Alabama, but was drafted by Oakland Raiders as the No. 8 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. The 3rd Alabama player drafted in the first round for the Tide was Kareem Jackson who would go on to be drafted by the Houston Texans as the No. 20 overall pick in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft. The 4th player to become drafted under Nick Saban was Marcell Dareus. Number 5 was Julio Jones who has spent his entire career in Atlanta after being the 6th overall pick in the 2011 Draft by the Falcons. The 6th first round draft pick under Nick Saban was James Carpenter who was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks with the 25th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. At number 7 we have former Alabama running back Mark Ingram who was drafted by the New Orleans Saints with the 28th overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.

This time, we will be focusing on another former Alabama football star, Mark Barron.

As a true freshman in 2008, Barron not only played in every single game, he also recorded 18 tackles and 1 sack.

In 2009, Barron became the starting safety and helped lead Alabama to a National Championship while recording 74 tackles, and also led the SEC in interceptions with 7, and also had 1 touchdown.

His junior year in 2010 was just as impressive. He finished the season with 77 tackles, 3 interceptions, 9 passes defended, and 1 forced fumble.

And finally as a senior in 2011, he won another national championship and also had 68 tackles, 1 sack, 2 interceptions, and 1 forced fumble.

At the 2012 NFL Draft, Barron was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 7th overall pick where he played from 2012-2014. At his time at Tampa Bay, he recorded 176 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 interceptions, and 6 forced fumbles.

In 2014, the Buccaneers traded Barron to the St. Louis (Los Angeles) Rams where he stayed until 2018. He recorded 307 tackles, 7 sacks, 5 interceptions, and 4 forced fumbles.

In 2019, Barron signed a 2 year, $12 million contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Last season he had 58 tackles, 3 sacks, and 1 interception.
