Noel Gallagher says he was too hungover to do Poznan at Man City game

The Oasis frontman went viral for a clip from the stands at Craven Cottage

Noel Gallagher didn’t do the Poznań like every Manchester City fan around him on Saturday, but the Oasis frontman says he had a good reason for that: He was very hungover.

Footage of Gallagher went viral over the weekend, as City fans performed their trademark Poznań celebration — turning their backs, locking arms, and jumping up and down — at Craven Cottage during a 4-0 win at Fulham.

Every City fan engaged in the Poznań except the solitary Gallagher, who instead stood stone-faced amid all the commotion around him.

The moment was captured on X by The Athletic’s Daniel Taylor.

Liam Gallagher — never one to shy away from getting a jab in at his brother — made sure to describe Noel’s actions as “poor behavior.”

In an interview on talkSPORT, Gallagher defended his actions (or lack thereof), saying that he was physically incapable of joining his fellow City fans due to a big night on the town the previous evening.

“You don’t really know until you leave the ground and your phone explodes,” he said of the viral clip.

“I have to say, in my defense, on Saturday I was still feeling the effects of a rather spectacular night out. So even if I wanted to join in the Poznań, I don’t think I would have been able to.”

Union sign Sullivan, 14, to Homegrown contract with Man City clause

The teenager has been described as the best prospect in the world in his age group

The Philadelphia Union have announced the signing of 14-year-old midfielder Cavan Sullivan to the richest Homegrown Player contract in MLS history.

Per multiple reports, Sullivan’s contract includes a clause that will see him join Premier League champion Manchester City when he turns 18.

“Cavan is undeniably a rare and extraordinary talent. At just 14 years old his natural skill and vision are far beyond his years,” said Union sporting director Ernst Tanner. “His advanced soccer IQ, paired with his ability to read plays, advance the ball, and score, show just how high his ceiling will be.”

Sullivan will join his brother Quinn, 20, on the Union’s first team.

“I’ve been watching my home team, the Union, for as long as I remember and hoped that one day I’d get the chance to play for my city in front of my family, friends, and fans,” Sullivan said. “Being able to not only play for the Union but to be able to play with my brother is a dream come true.”

Should the U.S. youth international debut for the Union on or before July 29, he will become the youngest player ever in the top North American professional sports leagues (MLB, MLS, NBA, NFL, NHL, NWSL).

In an interview with ESPN, Sullivan confirmed the Man City clause in his deal, saying it was a major factor in his decision to begin his pro career with his hometown club.

“I also think the collaboration between the Union and the City Group was — I think that did it for me. I always watch Man City. They’re like every kid’s dream team. For them [Philadelphia and Man City] to come together and agree on something — I sat with my family and my agents and we decided that it was the best plan.”

The Athletic reported that City will pay up to $5 million for Sullivan.

Sullivan made his pro debut in March, coming on as a substitute for Philadelphia Union II in MLS Next Pro and promptly delivering a game-winning assist.

Man City legend Aguero set to play in TST 2024

Man City’s all-time leading scorer will lead Agüero Team at the 7v7 tournament

Sergio Agüero is coming out of retirement — sort of.

The Manchester City and Argentina legend has announced he will play in the 2024 edition of The Soccer Tournament (TST), a 7v7 event with a $1 million winner-take-all prize.

The 35-year-old will lead Agüero Team, which will be debuting Man City’s new 2024-25 kit during the event in Cary, North Carolina.

“We are ecstatic to welcome Sergio and his team to this year’s field,” said TST founder and CEO Jon Mugar. “Not only is he one of the best players of all time, but he’s also one of the fiercest competitors ever. He’s coming to Cary to have fun and compete, which is exactly what TST is all about.”

This year’s TST will feature an eight-team women’s tournament and a 48-team men’s tournament, with the winner of each competition taking home $1 million.

In addition to Agüero, Nani and Mario Balotelli have also both confirmed their participation in this year’s TST, with the pair set to play for Nani FC. The women’s event will again feature US Women, which will be led by former U.S. women’s national team star Heather O’Reilly.

On Thursday, USWNT legend Ali Krieger also announced she will be joining US Women.

“I told [O’Reilly] that I’m only signing up if we win,” Krieger said on ESPN’s Fútbol Americas. “I’m very happy to be playing in front of the fans, supporters, and some family members again. It should be really fun!”

The tournament will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park from June 5-10, with ESPN broadcasting select matches.

The Cavan Sullivan hype train will be tough to slow down

The “best 14-year-old in the world” is set for a move to Manchester City

Before saying anything else about Cavan Sullivan, it’s probably worth emphasizing that, yes, he is 14 years old.

The world of soccer is filled with previously hyped-up 14-year-olds who never amounted to anything. Freddy Adu is the archetype here but let’s not forget he earned 17 senior national team caps, played well over 100 MLS games, and represented European powers like Benfica and Monaco.

He didn’t live up to the hype, obviously, but Adu went much farther than many other 14-year-old future Pelés.

But Sullivan, who is per multiple reports set to sign with Manchester City, does appear to be more can’t-miss than the average player his age.

Taylor Twellman has claimed that Man City scouts consider the U.S. under-15 attacker the best 14-year-old in the world, which is some heady stuff to hear for an American prospect. It also ensures the attention on Sullivan is only set to increase.

Fair or unfair (and it’s probably the latter), Sullivan captures the imagination right now because he seems to represent the next hope for American fans to finally see one of their own among the world’s best men’s players.

With apologies to the current crop of USMNT stars, there are no future Ballon d’Or candidates among them. As long as the country continues to lack that player everyone hoped Adu would become 20 years ago, the next 14-year-old prodigy will always have a little extra riding on their development.

Sullivan, of course, isn’t doing much on the field to tamp down the excitement. In his first pro game last weekend, he delivered the game-winning assist for Philadelphia Union II in MLS Next Pro.

“Those that maybe haven’t learned yet, a young Cavan Sullivan has the talent and ability to become, I’ll just say a household name and is doing really big things,” Union head coach Jim Curtin said last year.

Curtin appears as though he’ll have one of the first cracks to help shape Sullivan at the pro level. The teenager won’t be eligible for Man City until he’s 18, and The Athletic reports that he is set to sign the richest Homegrown Player contract in MLS history with the Union in the meantime.

Though the agreement comes with the stipulation that Sullivan could be sent to a City Football Group side in Europe “if his development surpasses MLS before his 18th birthday,” the possibility of Sullivan actually playing for his hometown team is strong.

That didn’t appear to be the case when early reports emerged of City’s interest. This appears to be a win-win for all parties, as Sullivan has the chance to play at home for a few more years, presumably joining his older brother Quinn on the first team eventually. The Union will get to see one of their brightest prospects play for them, and reap the financial benefits from a sale and future a sell-on percentage.

And if Sullivan is as good as they say he is — a big if, obviously — then Man City could have a future first-team contributor. That would put Sullivan in a rarified space that few American players have ever reached.

It’s a long way away, but it’s possible. And for a clamoring American fan base, that possibility is intoxicating.

Stones suffers injury for England in another blow for Man City

Another potentially major blow for Man City and England

Manchester City has suffered another injury blow during the international break, with England defender John Stones exiting Tuesday’s friendly against Belgium after just nine minutes.

Stones appeared to feel something as he played a pass and after attempting to play on for a few minutes, he was forced to come off the pitch.

The defender’s injury comes just days after Kyle Walker, his teammate for club and country, was injured in England’s friendly defeat to Brazil.

The timing for the injuries to Stones and Walker could hardly be worse, as Man City has a crucial Premier League match against Arsenal on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s men go into the game at Etihad Stadium in third place, but just one point behind both Liverpool and Arsenal in the table.

Sky Sports has reported that Walker’s injury doesn’t appear to be too serious, with City hopeful he can pass a late fitness test to start against Arsenal.

Stones will have to be considered a bigger doubt, with his injury coming just five days before the match against Mikel Arteta’s side. The 29-year-old defender has been a regular for City this season, starting the club’s past four Premier League games.

Guardiola does have some serious depth at his disposal, with Rúben Dias, Nathan Aké, Manuel Akanji and Joško Gvardiol all options at center back.

Horvath out, Steffen in as Premier League squads announced

Both players are facing a long spell without any club playing time

One day after he shut out Oman with the U.S. men’s national team, the harsh reality of Ethan Horvath’s club situation became apparent.

Nottingham Forest omitted Horvath from its 25-man Premier League squad on Wednesday, further reinforcing how far the 28-year-old is from club minutes.

The Colorado native missed out behind the club’s current starter, his international teammate Matt Turner, as well as the newly signed Odysseas Vlachodimos and Wales international Wayne Hennessey.

Horvath started last season while on loan at Luton Town, helping the club earn promotion to the Premier League. The Hatters opted against making the move permanent, however.

Horvath is now ineligible to play in the Premier League again until January at the earliest. With Forest already eliminated from the Carabao Cup and FA Cup minutes looking unlikely, Horvath is facing several months without any club playing time.

The only hope of avoiding that fate is a late move to the increasingly small number of leagues where the summer transfer window is still open.

Horvath has earned nine USMNT caps in his career, and served as Turner’s backup at the World Cup last year.

Steffen makes Man City’s PL squad

In a somewhat surprising move, USMNT goalkeeper Zack Steffen was named to Manchester City’s Premier League squad.

Steffen joined starter Ederson, as well as Scott Carson and Stefan Ortega as the Premier League champions’ four goalkeepers.

But don’t expect Steffen to see the field for City. The goalkeeper is still working his way back from knee surgery in June, and has previously expressed his desire to leave City permanently after playing with Middlesbrough on loan last season.

Full list of 2023 men’s Ballon d’Or nominees

Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland lead the 30-player shortlist

France Football has released its 30-player shortlist for the men’s Ballon d’Or award.

Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland lead the list, with the Inter Miami and Man City stars considered the two top contenders for the award.

Messi is looking to win the Ballon d’Or for a record eighth time after leading Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022. Haaland, meanwhile, is aiming for his first Ballon d’Or after scoring 52 goals in 53 games last season as City took home a treble.

Karim Benzema, who won the award last year, was named to the shortlist again after making an offseason move to Saudi club Al Ittihad.

Below is the list of 30 nominees for the men’s Ballon d’Or. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Paris on October 30.

The top 25 highest-paid Premier League players in 2023-24

The five biggest English clubs make up the majority of the list

The new Premier League season is upon us, with Manchester City looking to win the title for the fourth season in a row and the sixth time out of seven.

As more money piles into the world’s richest league, its clubs — especially the big ones — are spending that cash freely on transfer fees and wages.

When examining the biggest earners in the Premier League, it’s no surprise to see the big clubs dominating. Of the top 25 highest-paid players in the Premier League, 15 come from the two Manchester clubs.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal employ the bulk of the remaining players, with Newcastle the only other team represented.
