Man City legend Aguero set to play in TST 2024

Man City’s all-time leading scorer will lead Agüero Team at the 7v7 tournament

Sergio Agüero is coming out of retirement — sort of.

The Manchester City and Argentina legend has announced he will play in the 2024 edition of The Soccer Tournament (TST), a 7v7 event with a $1 million winner-take-all prize.

The 35-year-old will lead Agüero Team, which will be debuting Man City’s new 2024-25 kit during the event in Cary, North Carolina.

“We are ecstatic to welcome Sergio and his team to this year’s field,” said TST founder and CEO Jon Mugar. “Not only is he one of the best players of all time, but he’s also one of the fiercest competitors ever. He’s coming to Cary to have fun and compete, which is exactly what TST is all about.”

This year’s TST will feature an eight-team women’s tournament and a 48-team men’s tournament, with the winner of each competition taking home $1 million.

In addition to Agüero, Nani and Mario Balotelli have also both confirmed their participation in this year’s TST, with the pair set to play for Nani FC. The women’s event will again feature US Women, which will be led by former U.S. women’s national team star Heather O’Reilly.

On Thursday, USWNT legend Ali Krieger also announced she will be joining US Women.

“I told [O’Reilly] that I’m only signing up if we win,” Krieger said on ESPN’s Fútbol Americas. “I’m very happy to be playing in front of the fans, supporters, and some family members again. It should be really fun!”

The tournament will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park from June 5-10, with ESPN broadcasting select matches.
