Tottenham vs. Liverpool: How to watch Premier League clash

It’s second versus fourth in the marquee Premier League matchup of the weekend

Two unbeaten sides go head to head in north London on Saturday, as Tottenham hosts Liverpool in the weekend’s marquee Premier League matchup.

Spurs are in fourth place under new coach Ange Postecoglou, who has revitalized the team even after Harry Kane’s offseason departure to Bayern Munich.

Meanwhile, Liverpool look to be back to their best after a disappointing fifth-place finish last term, starting the new campaign off with five wins and a draw in their first six games.

Saturday’s game will be the second straight early-season test of Tottenham’s credentials. Spurs came out of last weekend’s north London derby with a well-earned 2-2 draw against Arsenal, as Son Heung-min netted a brace.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will come into the game full of confidence, having lost only once to Spurs in their last 20 league games.

Here is everything you need to know to watch Tottenham take on Liverpool.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is now the ‘Home of the NFL in the UK’

A minimum of two games per season will be played at the home of Tottenham

The NFL and Tottenham have announced an expansion of their partnership through the 2029-2030 NFL season.

As part of the agreement, a minimum of two games per season will be played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which has been given the designation of the “Home of the NFL in the UK.”

“NFL gamedays at our stadium are special occasions where we see fans from around the world descend on Tottenham, bringing so much vibrancy to the High Road and supporting our local economy,” said Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy in a statement. “As the NFL continues to grow its fanbase throughout Europe, we are extremely proud to be given official status as the Home of the NFL in the UK.”

Twelve of the NFL’s 32 teams have already played at the stadium, with two more games scheduled for the 2023 season.

The NFL played its first regular-season game in London in 2007, when the New York Giants faced the Miami Dolphins at Wembley Stadium. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium hosted its first game in 2019, the year it opened.

“Growing the game globally is a major strategic priority for the league,” said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. “Our commitment to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will allow us to continue to bring extraordinary NFL experiences to fans in London, while creating a positive social and economic impact on the local community.”

As part of its International Series, the NFL has also played five games in Mexico City, and will play two games in Frankfurt, Germany in the 2023 season.

The top 25 highest-paid Premier League players in 2023-24

The five biggest English clubs make up the majority of the list

The new Premier League season is upon us, with Manchester City looking to win the title for the fourth season in a row and the sixth time out of seven.

As more money piles into the world’s richest league, its clubs — especially the big ones — are spending that cash freely on transfer fees and wages.

When examining the biggest earners in the Premier League, it’s no surprise to see the big clubs dominating. Of the top 25 highest-paid players in the Premier League, 15 come from the two Manchester clubs.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal employ the bulk of the remaining players, with Newcastle the only other team represented.

Let’s take a look at the 25 highest-paid Premier League players in 2023-24 by annual salary. All data is provided by Capology.

Forbes ranks 20 most valuable soccer teams in the world

Valuations of the world’s biggest clubs are sky high

Who are the most valuable soccer teams in the world?

With success being more and more tied to an ability to spend, being a “big” club — at least in financial terms — is the clearest indicator of whether a given team is going to contend for trophies in the world’s top leagues.

That said, what defines value doesn’t necessarily require a team to be in the Premier League, La Liga, the Bundesliga, or Serie A. MLS has three teams in the top 20, including LAFC becoming the first club to break the $1 billion valuation barrier.

That said, Europe is still the home of the world’s biggest clubs, and its most valuable. In particular, eight of the top 20 hail from the Premier League, which will not be a particular surprise given the league’s global reach.

Here are Forbes’ 20 most valuable teams in global soccer.

Harry Kane still wants to kick some field goals in the NFL

The England captain wants to go from kicking round balls to oblong ones

Harry Kane has said he would like to be an NFL kicker when his days of kicking a soccer ball are through.

The Tottenham striker and avid American football fan appeared on “Good Morning America” on Wednesday, telling ex-NFL star Michael Strahan that he’s hopeful he can transition from kicking balls into a net to kicking balls through a goal post one day.

“It’s something I want to definitely explore,” Kane said. “I know it’d be a lot of hard work. I’m not expecting to just rock up and start kicking field goals. It’d be a lot of practice, a lot of hard work but yeah, it’s something I’d love to do. I’ve been following the NFL for about 10 years now and I love it. So I’d love to give it a go.”

Kane has become friends with NFL legend Tom Brady over the years, saying that he viewed the quarterback’s journey as an inspiration for his own career.

The England captain has previously spoken about his desire to play in the NFL one day, telling ESPN in 2019 that he was hopeful his experience in high-pressure situations in his soccer career could benefit him as a kicker.

“Of course, there’s a lot of technically very gifted players in the NFL kicking, a lot of players can kick it far and high, but I guess it all comes down to who can handle the pressure the best and I feel like the more I watch it, the more I see that in the big situations,” Kane said.

“A lot of times the game goes down to a last minute field goal, last second field goal. So I’d like to think my experience of dealing with that in soccer would put me maybe at an advantage compared to some of the other guys who haven’t had that experience, maybe coming out of college or things like that.”

Jose Mourinho loves all his former teams — except Tottenham

Getting sacked a week before a cup final can leave a bitter taste

José Mourinho has said he has fond feelings for every club that he’s managed in his career, except for one: Tottenham.

Mourinho was in charge in north London from November 2019 to April 2021. The Portuguese said that his lack of love for Spurs stems from the majority of his games being played without fans due to the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the timing of his sacking.

“Look, the reality is — I hope the Tottenham fans don’t get me wrong — but the only club in my career where I still don’t have a deep feeling with is Tottenham,” Mourinho told reporters.

“Probably because the stadium was empty (during) Covid time. Probably because Mr. Levy didn’t let me win a final and win a trophy.”

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy made the decision to sack Mourinho one week before the club was due to face Manchester City in the 2021 Carabao Cup final. With Ryan Mason in charge as interim manager, Spurs fell 1-0 to Pep Guardiola’s side at Wembley Stadium.

Mourinho has coached Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid and Manchester United, among others in his illustrious career. He is currently in charge at Roma.

“In all other clubs, there has always been a solid bond because people are not stupid,” Mourinho added. “It’s not about winning or losing. Fans understand that I fight for them every day. In my case, I am Romaista, Madridista and Interista and it’s a mutual thing. I will forever be tied to Roma and the other clubs I’ve coached.”

The day before the NFL released the full 2023 schedule, the league released the international games and specialty games on Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, and more. One of the international games that was announced was a trip for the Baltimore Ravens to London in Week 6 to play the Tennessee Titans.

Ravens outside linebacker David Ojabo was born in Nigeria, but moved to Scotland when he was a kid, making the trip to London in 2023 all the more special for him. Ojabo was asked about his emotions on playing in London and advice to give his teammates, and expressed plenty of excitement about the development.

“The emotions – God’s plan. It’s just spending [time] back home and being surrounded by my people. I know my people from Scotland are going to come watch. And any advice – just embrace it. It’s a lot different than America. The accent is different; the environment is different. But it’s going to be a blessed experience.”

The full 2023 NFL schedule doesn’t get released until Thursday, May 11th, but a surprise was released on Wednesday regarding the Baltimore Ravens. The NFL put out their 2023 international schedule, and Baltimore will be traveling across the pond.

The Ravens will be playing in Tottenham in Week 6 against the Tennessee Titans. The news of the Tottenham game was confirmed by the official Twitter account of the team, and they will hope to wipe away the memories of the only other time the team played abroad.

The one time Baltimore travelled internationally to play was in 2017. They were blown out 44-7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars in a game many would like to forget, so hopefully they’re able to put on a better showing this time around.

Premier League home stretch: Where things stand as season enters its final month

Some teams are having a blast, while others are going through it

The Premier League is getting down to the nitty-gritty.

The end of the season is approaching, with most teams having five or six games left to secure a trophy, a spot in Europe, or just keep themselves in the top flight for another year.

For some teams, the end of the season was expected to be a pressure-cooker, but has instead been something of a celebration. For others, it’s one last chance to fight their way to safety, or at least salvage some pride in an otherwise disappointing season.

Here’s where everyone stands heading into the last month of the 2022-23 season.

Tottenham was so bad vs. Newcastle that the interim manager got sacked

Spurs will have their third coach in a month after Cristian Stellini got the axe

Tottenham has pulled the managerial equivalent of substituting a substitute, announcing on Monday that it has sacked interim boss Cristian Stellini only a month after he was appointed to the position.

The precipitating event was Sunday’s humiliating 6-1 defeat to Newcastle — a game that Spurs somehow trailed 5-0 just 21 minutes in.

In a club statement, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said that result was simply too much to bear.

“Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable. It was devastating to see,” Levy said. “We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine.

“Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time. We wish him and his staff well.”

Ryan Mason will take over as Tottenham’s second interim manager in the span of a month, after previous head coach Antonio Conte got himself run out of the gig in the wake of a fiery rant against everything and everyone at the club.

With just six games remaining, Spurs have an uphill battle to finish in the top four. They are currently fifth, trailing six points behind Manchester United, which also has two games in hand.
