Alabama Morning Drive: ‘Super Conferences’ are the future of college football

Brace yourselves, more changes are coming to college football.

Good Friday morning, folks! Welcome back to another edition of Alabama Morning Drive. I hope everyone has enjoyed their work week as we head into a long holiday weekend.

Our lead story this morning shouldn’t come as a surprise to any of you who just lightly keeps up with the world of college football. It was announced on Thursday that USC and UCLA would be leaving the Pac-12 to join the Big Ten.

You may be asking yourself, what does this have to do with Alabama? Well, in actual reality, it has everything to do with Alabama. The landscape of college football is drastically changing, and rather quickly I might add. The transfer portal looks like a New York subway, NIL lacks clarity and accountability, and like it or not, major conference realignment is imminent.

Oklahoma and Texas are on their way to the SEC in a couple of years and now with the announcement of USC and UCLA on the move, the future of many conferences is looking bleak. It is only a matter of time before “Super Conferences” become a very real thing in college football.

What that looks like exactly is a little unclear, but I imagine, in less than 10 years, there will most likely just be two major conferences in college football with the SEC and the Big Ten leading the way.

Obviously, this is all still speculation but the writing is on the wall and change is on the way.

Let’s take a quick look at a few other stories to follow this morning.

Alabama Morning Drive: Tide adds speedy WR Cole Adams to 2023 class

Can anyone slow down Alabama’s momentum on the recruiting trail?

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! Welcome back to another edition of Alabama Morning Drive. Now that we’ve made it to Thursday, we are just one day away from a long holiday weekend.

If you thought recruiting news had been hot, just wait to see what happens over the next few days!

Speaking of recruiting, Nick Saban and Alabama added one of the nation’s best slot receiver prospects to the class of 2023 on Wednesday night when four-star [autotag]Cole Adams[/autotag] announced his commitment to the Tide.

Adams is a playmaking wideout from Oklahoma who chose the Crimson Tide over the in-state Sooners and other high-level programs such as Arkansas, LSU, Michigan State, Tennessee, and Texas A&M.

Let’s take a look at a few other stories that Tide fans should be following.

Five uncommitted 2023 recruits that are trending towards Texas

The Longhorns could land a couple of these prospects in the very near future.

Texas receives On3 prediction for four-star CB Malik Muhammad

Malik Muhammad may be trending toward the Longhorns.

Four-star cornerback Malik Muhammad might be trending toward the Longhorns. Sam Spiegelman of On3 Sports predicted Muhammad to Texas with 75% confidence on Tuesday.

Spiegelman is not the first to predict the top defensive back to Steve Sarkisian’s squad. Yesterday, On3 national recruiting analyst Gerry Hamilton put in a 60% confidence pick that the Oak Cliff native would join the Longhorns. Additionally, Geoff Ketchum of Orangebloods sent in a Rivals FutureCast for Muhammad in favor of Texas.

The Longhorns have had great success with safeties of late, but have not fared as well with elite cornerback prospects. The top 50 player from South Oak Cliff would be a massive addition to Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense. Clearly, Terry Joseph, Blake Gideon and company are having a strong offseason on the recruiting trail.

Individually, On3 Sports ranks Muhammad the No. 2 cornerback and No. 26 overall player in the nation. He is the No. 5 cornerback and No. 50 player in the On3 consensus, which accounts for ratings from 247Sports, Rivals, and ESPN as well.

Texas commit Arch Manning is recruiting program-changing players

The Manning family is pushing to bring Anthony Hill to Texas.

Arch Manning is pushing hard to build a championship roster at the University of Texas.

Five-star linebacker Anthony Hill appears to be one of Arch Manning’s primary targets. Hill’s recruitment to Texas seems to be a family effort by the Manning family.

Hill would figure to be one of the cornerstone players for Texas in the 2023 class. On the defensive side, Texas is pushing for a few more highly coveted recruits. Gerry Hamilton of Inside Texas placed another prediction in favor of Texas for four-star cornerback Malik Muhammad.

Texas is in the hunt for a major potential secondary haul that at the top end could include Muhammad, Jordan Matthews, and Javien Toviano. The trio would be a lethal combination to add to five-star safety commit Derek Williams Jr.

The back end of the 2023 defensive class could be taking shape soon. If Texas can bring in more talent on the defensive line, they have the foundation of a strong defense heading into the SEC.

Texas A&M Football Recruiting Profile: 2023 CB, Malik Muhammad

Malik Muhammad is one of the top 10 defensive back prospects in the 2023 recruiting class and has been a top target for the Aggies since he first came on the scene during his 2020 sophomore season. Muhammad is going into his senior season with South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, Texas, and looking to capitalize off of what was a highly successful 2021 junior season, recording 68 total tackles, 6 pass breakups, and 3 interceptions with 1 returned for a touchdown. Muhammad is a two-sport athlete, participating in track and field as well as football, performing in the 100 meters, relays, long jump, and triple jump events. He also comes from a long line of high-level athletes, most notably his cousins A.J Green and Jabbar Muhammad (former Oklahoma State cornerbacks), and his younger cousin, Abdul Muhammad, a fellow cornerback prospect in the 2023 recruiting class.

As a prospect, Malik Muhammad is one of the most athletic and versatile defensive back players in the class, with the ability to play on the boundary and in the slot, and also flex out to the safety position. he consistently transitions well out of his backpedal, has great hip fluidity in his turns, and shows good burst and quickness against a variety of receivers. He displays fantastic play speed and is a solid man defender while showing great instincts in zone coverage.

Overall, Muhammad is one of the toughest defenders in the class and doesn’t show away from contributing in run defense, and never gives up in coverage.

LOOK: Four-star CB Malik Muhammad visiting Texas on Saturday

Uber-talented 2023 defensive back Malik Muhammad made his way to Austin on Saturday for an unofficial visit.

Uber-talented 2023 defensive back Malik Muhammad made his way to Austin on Saturday for an unofficial visit.

247Sports composite ranks Muhammad as the No. 8 prospect from the state of Texas and the No. 42 overall player in the country.

National recruiting analyst Cooper Petagna sees Muhammad as a future difference-maker at the college level.

Projects to a high level multi-year starter at a Power Five program with the ability to develop into an all-conference player at the next level. Will add value on multiple special teams units and wouldn’t be surprised if he sees the field sooner than later collegiately.

The South Oak Cliff product has racked up an impressive 43 total offers from some of the nation’s top programs. Muhammad recently narrowed down his recruitment to six schools. Texas made the cut along with Alabama, Florida, Miami, Michigan and Texas A&M.

Muhammad would be a key piece of the puzzle in Texas’ 2023 recruiting class.

Florida makes this 4-star cornerback’s top 6 list of schools

Florida made four-star cornerback Malik Muhammad’s top six on Wednesday.

Florida made the cut for four-star cornerback [autotag]Malik Muhammad[/autotag]’s list of top six schools, even though head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and staff haven’t hosted him since they’ve taken over the Gators program. They were included along with Texas A&M, Alabama, Michigan, Texas and Miami.

Muhammad hails from Dallas, and the 247Sports composite rankings have him as the sixth-best cornerback prospect and as the 42nd best player overall.

He told On3 that Florida made the cut because of Napier and cornerbacks coach [autotag]Corey Raymond[/autotag]. The former LSU assistant is regarded as one of the best defensive backs coaches in the country and was likely the largest factor in Florida making his list.

So far this year, Muhammad has visited the Crimson Tide three times, the Hurricanes twice and the Aggies once.

Florida likely has other targets higher on its board like [autotag]Cormani McClain[/autotag], [autotag]AJ Harris[/autotag] and [autotag]Tony Mitchell[/autotag]. However, the Gators could turn up the heat if they don’t land one of their top prospects above.
