Texas cornerback Malik Muhammad’s 2024 snapshot profile

A look at sophomore cornerback Malik Muhammad as he heads into the 2024 season.

Texas Longhorns cornerback [autotag]Malik Muhammad[/autotag] heads into his sophomore season on the Forty Acres looking to build off an impressive freshman campaign. While appearing in 14 games for the Texas defense, he also participated on special teams. He recovered a blocked punt against the Oklahoma Sooners for a touchdown.

Muhammad made two starts for the Texas defense in 2023, that number could grow in the upcoming season. He is the cousin of Jabbar Muhammad, who currently plays for the Oregon Ducks. Last season the two played against each other when Jabbar was with the Washington Huskies.

Malik Muhammad had the fifth-highest grade on defense per Pro Football Focus at 78.6 and the highest grade in coverage at 79.9. Muhammad allowed just one touchdown while snagging one interception. Only Terrance Brooks played more snaps at cornerback for Texas. Muhammad tallied 479 total snaps on defense.

Depth Chart Overview

Malik Muhammad is expected to be the starter as the boundary cornerback. The boundary cornerback or BCB is the corner that plays the short side of the field with little help. Essentially that cornerback plays on an island, which goes to show the faith the staff has in Muhammad.

Muhammad is listed above incoming freshman Kobe Black and Warren Roberson on our initial depth chart ahead of the season.

Texas cornerback Malik Muhammad listed among second-year breakout candidates

Keep your eyes on No. 5 this upcoming season.

Predicting breakout stars isn’t an exact science. A lot of times it just comes down to opportunity. That is one thing that sophomore defensive back Malik Muhammad should have a lot of in the 2024 season. The team lost some talent on the backend who contributed to the Big 12 championship team.

Muhammad appeared in all 14 games as a true freshman in 2023, making two starts for Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense. He tallied 31 tackles, four pass breakups, and snagged one interception. Muhammad also contributed on special teams with a blocked punt recovery for a touchdown against the Oklahoma Sooners.

According to Will Backus of CBS Sports, Muhammad is one of the top breakout candidates not only for Texas but at the national level as well.

Malik Muhammad, Sophomore Cornerback

Aaron E. Martinez/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK

“Ryan Watts is off to the NFL and Terrance Brooks transferred to Illinois, leaving Texas with an opening at each of its starting outside cornerback spots.” Backus continues, “Muhammad was actually first off the bench when Brooks missed a couple games due to injury in 2023, which means Texas’ coaching staff already has deep trust in the potential star.”

There is already a ton of confidence in the second-year player. Muhammad finished No. 8 on the team in total snaps played. The aforementioned Brooks was the cornerback to play more snaps than Muhammad. His 79.9 coverage grade from PFF was the best on the team.

SEC breakout star candidates

Other Texas breakout star candidates to consider

  • DeAndre Moore Jr., Wide Receiver
  • Johntay Cook II, Wide Receiver

These two feel like the most obvious choices outside of Muhammad. Johntay Cook II feels like the safest choice for the bunch given his role will likely increase this upcoming season.

Texas Football: Midseason awards for seven players

From defensive MVP to newcomer, here are the midseason awards for Texas through the first six weeks.

The No. 9 Texas Longhorns are 5-1 through the first six weeks of the season. Believe it or not, Texas still has a great chance to make the Big 12 conference championship game and the College Football Playoff.

The Longhorns are scoring an average of 35 points per game while allowing only 16.3 points on the defensive side, a significant improvement from last year’s nearly 23 points per game.

Over the past six weeks, we have seen significant improvements in the team’s mindset and performance on the field compared to last year.

This Texas team feels different, and although they were handed their first loss last week, the Longhorns still control their own destiny and will look to achieve a conference championship in December.

From monsters on the defensive line to newcomers, here are my midseason awards for seven Texas players.

Johntay Cook and Malik Muhammad are excited to get to Texas

“Bringing that 214 tradition to the 512.”

Johntay Cook and Malik Muhammad are two of many Texas signees representing the Longhorns at the Under Armor All-American game in Orlando this week.

Cook has been cooking opposing defensive backs in the practice portion of the camp. The five-star wide receiver has a knack for creating separation and making big plays.

Muhammad is impressive with his athleticism and instincts in Florida so far. He snagged an interception during Friday’s scrimmage and showed off some great reps vs. elite wide receiver talents.

The two are coming off state championship runs for DeSoto and South Oak Cliff, respectively. Cook and Muhammad are ready to bring their championship pedigree to Texas.

Tune in to EPSN at 4 p.m. CT to watch the 2023 Under Armor All-American game. It is the last chance Texas signees have to showcase their skills before arriving on campus.

How Longhorn commits fared at the 2022 Texas state championships

Five Texas commits won state championships over the weekend.

The 2022 UIL Texas state championships wrapped up over the weekend after some exciting games.

Texas was well represented with five commits participating in the action.

  • 2023 CB Malik Muhammad (South Oak Cliff)

  • 2023 WR Johntay Cook (DeSoto)
  • 2023 RB Tre Wisner (DeSoto)
  • 2024 DB Jaden Allen (Aledo)

Muhammad and Walton anchored a strong defensive performance to guide South Oak Cliff to its second straight state title. Muhammad took home defensive MVP after hauling in a crucial pick-six to ice the game.

Aledo continued its run of dominance with a 52-14 victory over College Station. Allen had four tackles and a pass breakup in the win.

DeSoto capped off the weekend with a 42-17 win over Austin Vandergrift. The dynamic duo of Johntay Cook and Tre Wisner was a force from start to finish.

Texas CB commit Malik Muhammad to visit two SEC schools

Muhammad is still being pursued hard by Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher.

Texas cornerback commit Malik Muhammad has not totally shut down his recruitment. The four-star is set to take official visits to both Alabama and Texas A&M this fall.

Muhammad is still being pursued hard by Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher despite his commitment to Texas in July. He will take the trip to Tuscaloosa on Oct. 22 and follow that up with a College Station visit on Oct. 29.

247Sports Composite rankings list Muhammad as the No. 5 cornerback in the nation and the No. 7 prospect in the state of Texas. He is an elite athlete with the versatility to play all over the secondary at the next level.

Steve Sarkisian and his Texas staff are going to have to fight to keep the South Oak Cliff product in its 2023 recruiting class. Keeping Muhammad in the fold is a major priority for Texas’ program.
