Jags to work out former Broncos OLB Malik Carney
The Jags have a workout scheduled with former Broncos LB Malik Carney who appears to be a fit at SAM LB.
The Jacksonville Jaguars made their initial final 53-man roster official Saturday, but there still are practice squad spots to fill out and maybe even a change or two that could be made to the main roster. Someone who could be apart of those additions is former Denver Broncos outside linebacker Malik Carney, who was cut this week. Per former Jags beat writer Ryan O’Halloran of the Denver Post, the second-year player will be working out for the Jags soon.
Additionally, the team will be adding undrafted guard Tre’vour Wallace-Simms to their practice squad after he spent the offseason with the team.

Carney, 24, went undrafted last season out of the University of North Carolina to the Detroit Lions. After spending time there, he also spent time on the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad before joining the Broncos’ in November.
At roughly 6-foot-2, 251-pounds, Carney is a player who the Jags will likely view as a SAM linebacker with the ability to play from two or three-point stance much like Cassius Marsh. There could be a roster spot available soon with the Jags planning to place weak-side linebacker Quincy Williams on injured reserve as he recovers from core muscle surgery. However, if they feel Carney needs more development, then their practice squad would be better for him.
As for Wallace-Simms, it makes sense for the Jags to stash him on the practice squad because they only have eight offensive linemen on the active roster. Additionally, as a former first-team All-Southeastern Conference player in 2018, Wallace-Simms may have some upside to become a serviceable backup or starter in time.
The Broncos have been hit hard by injuries in the second week of training camp.
The Broncos have been hit hard by injuries in the second week of training camp.
Linebacker Justin Strnad had wrist surgery and will miss the entire season. In addition to Strnad, 10 other Denver players were held out of Monday’s practice.
WR KJ Hamler (hamstring), ILB Todd Davis (calf), WR Juwann Winfree (groin), CB Michael Ojemudia (quad), TE Austin Fort (knee), DB Alijah Holder (soft tissue), CB De’Vante Bausby (soft tissue), OLB Malik Carney (illness), WR Tim Patrick (soft tissue) and DL Mike Purcell (calf) were also sidelined.
Broncos coach Vic Fangio said he didn’t anticipate having this many soft tissue injuries during camp.
“I was not expecting that,” Fangio said. “I think there were some flaws in the way we set up the acclimation period along with the other stuff. It doesn’t do anybody any good to whine about it now. We just have to adjust and improvise and react to it, which we did.”
Denver adjusted Monday’s schedule and made it a lighter practice session. The Broncos’ season opener against the Titans is three weeks away so the team still has some time for players to get healthy.

Which linebackers will make the Broncos’ 53-man roster?
As we continue our 2020 depth chart prediction series for the Denver Broncos, today we’re going to be looking at the linebacker position.
Previously, we predicted QB, RB, TE, WR, OL, DL and CB depth charts.
OLB | ILB | ILB | OLB |
Von Miller | Alexander Johnson | Todd Davis | Bradley Chubb |
Malik Reed | Justin Strnad | Justin Hollins | Jeremiah Attaochu |
Derrek Tuszka | Josey Jewell | Joe Jones | Malik Carney |
Tre’ Crawford | Josh Watson |
The Broncos’ four starting linebackers are pretty easy to predict. Unless Davis is cut for cap reasons, the top-four LBs on the depth chart will likely be Miller, Johnson, Davis and Chubb this season.
The backup spots are harder to predict.
Reed and Hollins seem like safe bets to make the team and Attaochu was an excellent injury fill-in for Chubb last season. If those three make the team, seven linebackers could be fighting for just one remaining spot.
Jones is an excellent special teams player but Strnad might be able to fill a similar role at a cheaper price. It’s hard to imagine Denver moving on from Jewell this year but he will face tough competition for a roster spot.
Some of the linebackers that don’t make the active roster could end up on the practice squad. Tuszka is a likely practice squad candidate.

The Broncos have added outside linebacker Malik Carney and safety Tyvis Powell to their 10-man practice squad.
After placing quarterback Joe Flacco (neck) and linebacker Corey Nelson (biceps) on injured reserve, the Denver Broncos promoted quarterback Brett Rypien and linebacker Josh Watson from the 10-man practice squad to the 53-man roster last week.
To fill the two spots on the practice squad vacated by Rypien and Watson, the team has signed outside linebacker Malik Carney and safety Tyvis Powell, according to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala.
Carney (6-3, 235 pounds) is a rookie who totaled 176 tackles — including 32.5 tackles for losses — and 17 sacks during his four years at North Carolina. Before this year’s draft, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compared Carney to ex-Denver outside linebacker Shaq Barrett.
Powell (6-3, 210 pounds) is a third-year defensive back who has spent time with six different NFL teams, most recently with the Dallas Cowboys in August. He dressed for seven games with the San Francisco 49ers last season and totaled six tackles and forced one fumble.
Before the 2016 draft, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compared Powell to Kendrick Lewis, who had an eight-year career in the NFL.
The Broncos’ 10-man practice squad and 53-man roster are now both full.
