UFC on ESPN+ 32’s Maki Pitolo plans to make a statement in his new weight class

Maki Pitolo is keen to show that he can hang at 185 pounds by taking out Darren Stewart at UFC on ESPN+ 32.

LAS VEGAS —[autotag]Maki Pitolo[/autotag] is keen to show that he can hang at 185 pounds.

Former welterweight campaigner Pitolo (13-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) punched his ticket to the UFC on “Dana White’s Contender Series” as a middleweight and said he has no intention of dropping back down to 170 pounds.

He might be a smaller middleweight, but Pitolo is confident that he can find success in his new weight class, which started out with second-round finish over Charles Byrd at UFC 250.

Pitolo faces Darren Stewart (11-5 MMA, 4-1 UFC) Saturday at UFC on ESPN+ 32, where he’ll look to continue his momentum and send a message to the rest of the division.

“I wanted a bigger guy, I wanted to have a serious opponent that will potentially wake up the middleweight division and let them know I mean business,” Pitolo told reporters at Thursday’s UFC on ESPN+ 32 virtual media day. “A lot of people are thinking I should bounce back and forth between welterweight and middleweight, but this is where I got my contract, this is where I mean business and this is where I want to be.”

With all but two of his pro career wins coming by finish, “Coconut Bombz” is approaching this fight the same way he always does, with fight-ending intentions.

“He’s a strong opponent, he’s a very dangerous guy, and I’m a very dangerous guy, so we’re gonna go in there, we’re dogs,” Pitolo said. “I’m gonna go in there and throw down and do what I do best, look for the opportunity to finish at every aspect of the game, and I know my confidence and what I’ve done in this camp will prevail.”

UFC on ESPN+ 32’s Darren Stewart plans to pile the pressure on Maki Pitolo

Darren Stewart is planning on dragging Maki Pitolo into deep waters at UFC on ESPN+ 32.

LAS VEGAS — [autotag]Darren Stewart[/autotag] is planning on dragging [autotag]Maki Pitolo[/autotag] into deep waters.

Stewart (11-5 MMA, 4-1 UFC) faces Pitolo (13-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) Saturday at UFC on ESPN+ 32, and the 10-fight UFC veteran expects his experience to play a major factor.

Speaking to reporters, including MMA Junkie, during the virtual media day session ahead of the event, Stewart explained that he doesn’t think Pitolo has engaged in the same type of wars that he has endured, and said he expects that to be the crucial difference between the pair on fight night.

“First round, second round, third round, I’m just gonna go out there and just do me, and put him under pressure like mad,” he said. “I feel like he hasn’t fought no one like me. I’ve been in wars. Look at my face, I’ve been in wars. I’ve been through everything. Everything you can name, I’ve been through. I don’t know him that well, I don’t know his record, I don’t know too much about him. I don’t think he’s been through wars.”

Stewart and Pitolo have had one common opponent in Charles Byrd, with both men scoring stoppage victories. But, after looking back at their respective matchups, Stewart sees his finish of Byrd as more definitive than Pitolo’s.

“The last fight he had was against Charles Byrd and Charles Byrd was tired that fight,” Stewart said. “I don’t know and he beat Charles Byrd, a couple of strikes on the floor, one, two, three, ref jumped in. I beat Charles Byrd one elbow, done. It is what it is, I’m gonna bring the smoke.”

Under the UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance program’s payout tiers, which appropriate the money generated by Reebok’s multi-year sponsorship with the UFC, fighters are paid based on their total number of UFC bouts, as well as Zuffa-era WEC fights (January 2007 and later) and Zuffa-era Strikeforce bouts (April 2011 and later). Fighters with 1-3 bouts receive $3,500 per appearance; 4-5 bouts get $4,000; 6-10 bouts get $5,000; 11-15 bouts earn $10,000; 16-20 bouts pocket $15,000; and 21 bouts and more get $20,000. Additionally, champions earn $40,000 while title challengers get $30,000.

In addition to experience-based pay, UFC fighters will receive in perpetuity royalty payments amounting to 20-30 percent of any UFC merchandise sold that bears their likeness, according to officials.
