Sooner Nation reacts on social media to recruiting news and projections involving blue-chip prospects for 2023

Locks, crystal balls, and recruiting projections sent Sooner Nation ablaze on Saturday, and here are some of the best social media reactions.

The Party at the Palace was an opportunity to showcase the Oklahoma Sooners to a host of college football prospects in the 2023 recruiting class. And it made a huge impression on several prospects. On Friday and into Saturday, Oklahoma assistant coaches began dropping “lock” emojis on social media creating a frenzy among the fan base about which players they could be referring to.

Recruiting analysts began to share tidbits about what it could mean for the 2023 recruiting class without sharing names. Then just after lunchtime, the 247Sports crystal balls, Rivals FutureCasts, and On3 predictions started dropping for highly-regarded 2023 prospects Colton Vasek, Jordan Renaud, and David Hicks.

Three blue-chip prospects for Brent Venables’ defensive line after already adding [autotag]Adepoju Adebawore[/autotag] and [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] recently.

In these three recruiting battles, the Sooners are going up against Texas for Vasek, Alabama for Renaud, and Texas A&M for Hicks. And if the projections come to fruition, they’ll be huge wins for the Oklahoma Sooners in Brent Venables’ first full-year recruiting cycle. That doesn’t even include recent projections for players like [autotag]Makari Vickers[/autotag] and Jacobe Johnson in recent days. And with Peyton Bowen and Ryan Yaites in attendance, it’s possible the Sooners could flip commitments from Notre Dame and LSU.

Just when we thought Brent Venables’ 2023 recruiting class couldn’t get any better, he and his staff went out and showed us how it could get better.

Oklahoma Sooners receive crystal ball for 4-star DB Makari Vickers

The Sooners’ hot July continues with yet another crystal ball for yet another blue-chip prospect in DB Makari Vickers

The Oklahoma Sooners’ hot month continues as they received a crystal ball from OUInsider at 247Sports’ Brandon Drumm for four-star defensive back Makari Vickers.

The big safety has been playing varsity football in Florida since his sophomore year of high school. He’s seen playing time at both corner and safety.

On July 12, Vickers put Oklahoma, Michigan, and Alabama in his top three schools, and with another crystal projection, the Sooners seem to be in a great spot to land the highly-regarded defensive back.

Should he end up committing to OU, Vickers would join another four-star DB, Jasiah Wagoner. Wagoner is the only defensive back committed to the Sooners for the 2023 class as of now. Landing these blue chip recruits in prime SEC country before going to the SEC would be huge for this OU program.

Makari Vickers’ Recruiting Profile

Projections

  • No current FutureCasts from Rivals
  • On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine still has Florida State as the leader for Vickers, but the Seminoles were not in his top three schools.
  • Drumm’s crystal ball projection is the second from OUInsider. Parker Thune previously projected the Sooners to land the four-star DB.

Alabama makes top three for 2023 four-star safety, Makari Vickers

Alabama is a finalist to land for 2023 four-star safety Makari Vickers.

Alabama made some noise on the recruiting trail over the last few weeks and will look to carry that momentum into the coming months. Nick Saban has been relatively quiet on the trail up until this past month in comparison to other powerhouse programs like Clemson, Miami, Texas and Georgia.

Alabama received good news when 2023 safety Makari Vickers listed the Crimson Tide among his top-three schools.

The primary recruiter for the Florida prospect is safeties coach Charles Kelly. Over the past few years, Kelly has landed several defensive backs from Florida. Several of those players are Jake Pope, Terrion Arnold, Kristian Story and Brian Branch, all of whom are on Alabama’s current roster.

The Tide have been recruiting Vickers for quite some time. Kelly is familiar with the Tallahassee area after he coached at Florida State for five years. He also went into the Seminoles’ backyard to land Terrion Arnold two years ago.

Makari Vickers’ Highlights

Roll Tide Wire breakdown the rest of Vickers’ recruiting profile below.

A major target for the Oklahoma Sooners, CB Makari Vickers announces his top 3

After having the Sooners in his top 8, cornerback Makari Vickers lists Oklahoma in his top 3 and announced a commitment date for August 26.

As has been the case across the board, Oklahoma’s recruiting for the 2023 class is starting to see significant movement. Whether it’s with commitments or prospects trimming down their lists of schools, there is a significant amount of momentum happening for the Oklahoma Sooners on the recruiting trail.

Oklahoma’s hot streak on the recruiting trail in July is well documented. With five commitments in the month of July, and the possibility of adding a few more by month’s end, Oklahoma is poised to head into the 2022 regular season with tons of heat.

They aren’t done and are firmly entrenched in recruiting battles for premium talent. One of those battles involves four-star cornerback Makari Vickers, an exceptional talent out of Florida who has dropped his top three schools and announced his commitment date.

For the talented cornerback out of Florida, only three schools remain in contention: Alabama, Michigan, and the Oklahoma Sooners. Vickers spent the month of June taking official visits to Oklahoma for the ChampU BBQ, Michigan the weekend of June 10, and Alabama the weekend of June 17. He plans to take one last trip to Norman at the end of this month before August rolls around as he begins to hone in on a decision.

Oklahoma leads for Vickers according to the 247Sports crystal ball as they are the only school with a prediction logged in their favor. However, the four-star safety Vickers has been high on the Crimson Tide for a while. It was Jay Valai’s connection with Vickers while still on Alabama’s staff that started his connection with the Tide and it’s that relationship with Valai that has Oklahoma in this spot.

When speaking to Andrew Ivins of 247Sports about his top three, Vickers said, “Coach [Brent Venables] is a high-energetic person,” Vickers said. “Every time I have been there, he has been the same. His motor does not change no matter what time it is. So, I really like his energy. And then Coach [Jay] Valai, when he was at ‘Bama, we had a good connection. Now that he’s at Oklahoma, he has opened a little more, and I really like his coaching style.”

A decision looks destined for August 26th, according to the report from Andrew Ivins, and will give Oklahoma Sooners fans something to tune into just in time before college football’s “Week Zero” begins on August 27.

With no cornerbacks committed in their 2023 class, this is a major recruit for the Sooners and a battle that they must win. With the upgrade in the quality of defensive coaches on this staff, fans should fill much more confident in battles like this. We won’t truly know how this turns out until August, but for right now, the Sooners are in a good spot for a talented cornerback.

Oklahoma Sooners make Top 8 for four-star Florida CB Makari Vickers

Four-star cornerback Makari Vickers lists Oklahoma as one of his top 8 schools along with the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Texas, and FSU.

Oklahoma’s cornerbacks’ room could look different in the fall of 2023. [autotag]Woodi Washington[/autotag] may very well be off to the NFL, and [autotag]Jaden Davis[/autotag] will be eligible for a fifth year. Still, there’s no guarantee he’ll be around, transfer cornerback [autotag]C.J. Coldon[/autotag] will use his final year of eligibility this season, and UNC transfer [autotag]Trey Morrison[/autotag] will also be gone following 2022.

With that being said, recruiting cornerbacks who may need to be ready to play next year could be of significant importance. So it should come as no surprise that the Sooners have offered 19 cornerbacks in the 2023 recruiting class. One of those offers, Makari Vickers, has been highly receptive to Oklahoma’s efforts and has gone on to list the Oklahoma Sooners as one of the top 8 schools he’ll be focusing on as he narrows his recruitment.

The Sooners join Oregon, Georgia, Florida State, Alabama, Michigan, Miami, and Texas as finalists for the highly touted four-star cornerback.

Vickers is a four-star on every major recruiting service in the industry. Vickers has commanded attention from almost every major program in the country. Competing against the likes of Alabama and  Georgia for defensive talent is no easy proposition but it’s one the Sooners may get used to with the new crop of defensive coaches. Spearheaded by Brent Venables who has recruited the southeast like none other over the last decade, the Sooners will be facing recruiting battles on the defensive side of the ball in 2023 and beyond.

The Sooners are very much in a good spot as Jay Valai was recruiting Vickers while he was still at Alabama as their cornerbacks’ coach. That relationship has continued to grow since coming over from Tuscaloosa to the same position at Oklahoma. With no crystal ball predictions in, it may be tough to get a read but considering he will take his official to OU for the ChampU BBQ, the Sooners have to like their positioning heading into the summer.

The two-sport star excels on the football field and the track.

Four-star Makari Vickers is one of the top defensive prospects in the nation. 247Sports ranks the Florida product as the No. 78 player and No. 5 defensive back in the 2023 cycle.

The two-sport star excels on the football field and the track, and has racked up an impressive 21 offers up to this point.

Vickers named the top eight schools in his recruitment via Twitter on Friday. Texas made the cut along with the likes of Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma and Oregon.

Texas is looking for some momentum in the 2023 recruiting class. The Longhorns have five commits so far, good for the No. 19 ranked group in the country.

Vickers is set to visit Oklahoma during the first week of June. Getting the speedy defensive back on campus for a summer visit would provide a huge boost to Texas’ chances in this recruitment.

Oklahoma Sooners summer recruiting primer for the 2023 recruiting cycle

With the summer on the horizon, we took a look at the names to know as the Sooners look to make a push on the recruiting front for 2023.

Brent Venables and Co. are weeks removed from their first spring as a staff together. It was a successful one with no notable injuries and some standout performances across the board. All told, things went as well as they could’ve hoped considering the positive reviews from the media and recruits in attendance.

The spring game served as an eye-opener for recruits and gave the Oklahoma Sooners some significant momentum to ride as they head into the most crucial time of the year for recruiting. With spring ball done and the team going home to recharge before fall camp, the staff will be all in on recruiting. With that in mind, it’s time to map out the targets to watch as the 2023 class begins to materialize this summer.

Conn, Clemson ‘highly interested’ in one of nation’s top DBs

During the live period, Clemson co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Mickey Conn stopped by St. John Paul II Catholic High School (Tallahassee, Fla.) on Tuesday, Jan. 24, and sat down with the program’s head coach, Ed Hill. The Clemson …

During the live period, Clemson co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Mickey Conn stopped by St. John Paul II Catholic High School (Tallahassee, Fla.) on Tuesday, Jan. 24, and sat down with the program’s head coach, Ed Hill.

The Clemson Insider caught up with Hill, who detailed Conn’s visit to campus and what prospects Clemson is showing interest in

“He wanted to make sure that we knew that they were highly interested in (2023 four-star defensive back) Makari Vickers and did not want to miss on him,” Hill said. “We have Makari Vickers and then we have a kid named (2023 defensive end) Avery Howard that I want them to take a look at as well, that they’re gonna take a look at.”

Vickers is the No. 5 DB in the nation and one of the more sought-after prospects in the nation. According to his head coach, the 6-3, 200-pound safety is the “real deal.”

“His mom’s an educator, his dad’s a pastor and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” Hill said of Vickers. “Just a delightful, hard-working kid, who just loves the game of football. He’ll come to school and work out in the gym and after our workout or conditioning, he’ll go to a private trainer and train.

“He’s a delightful kid to have in class. He’s been a kid that I’ve known for some time and had an opportunity to coach for a little bit. He is — like I tell people — as advertised. He is really a great overall kid. He’s by far one of the best DBs out there.”

During his visit, Conn did something that you’ll very rarely hear.

He wanted to let Hill know that Clemson was very interested in a prospect it ultimately missed out on in Terrion Arnold. In the class of 2021, Arnold who is now at the University of Alabama, ranked as the No. 3 safety and No. 51 overall prospect nationally, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

“Honestly, (Clemson) never came down. They never stepped foot on campus and he told me that,” Hill recalled. “He said, ‘We were here. We were running out of time and trying to get to a flight and we had to choose between two schools,’ and he said, ‘Coach, I’ll be honest, we chose the other school and it was probably the worst mistake we made. We should’ve come by here and seen Terrion and gone an opportunity to be in the race for him.’”

Now, it’s water under the bridge, but after it was all said and done, Conn told Hill that they knew that they had missed out on Arnold. He wanted to assure Hill that wouldn’t happen with Vickers and they are planning to build a strong relationship with him.

“I look forward to building this relationship with Coach (Conn) because he seemed like a really honest guy,” Hill said. “That’s one of the things he talked about is how he’s gonna coach them and how Clemson is a family. He talked about wanting to get (Vickers) on campus, so he could see and feel the love and how they operate up there.”

Hill has been a fan of Clemson for a while now and feels that head coach Dabo Swinney has done a “tremendous” job in building the program. He’s encouraging Vickers to visit Clemson and they have a date circled on the calendar for sometime next month to check out some spring practices and check out the campus.

“I think Clemson is a place that Vickers can see himself playing at,” he said. “They are an elite program and from an academic standpoint, it’s a school that he can go and thrive at. It’s just a matter of getting on campus and seeing it.”
