JD Davison talks his tenure with Boston, Portland on the Maine Celtics podcast

He also gets into how the Maine Celtics have been playing so far this season.

Most fans of the Boston Celtics have become followers of the team-produced podcast “The View From the Rafters,” but you would have to truly be among the most hardcore of Boston fans to know about another team-produced podcast in the greater Celtics orbit.

And that lesser-known podcast is the “Maine Celtics” podcast, which just dropped its fifth episode of the 2023-24 season. In it, hosts Brendan Glasheen and Chris Whitney sat down with two way Celtics floor general JD Davison, who breaks down what it was like in his first season with the Celtics, splitting his time between Portland and Boston.

He also gets into how the Maine Celtics have been playing so far this season, and the crew previews a tilt with the Sioux Falls Skyforce that Portland is slated to play soon.

Catching up with Boston Celtics two way player JD Davison

The former No. 53 pick of the Celtics recently sat down with the folks behind the official G League YouTube channel to share how he made his way from the deep south to the fringes of the NBA.

Fans of the Boston Celtics likely have not thought all that much about two way Celtics point guard JD Davison, but the Alabama native has been honing his craft in Portland, Maine with the Maine Celtics. The Alabama alum has played with the parent club in garbage time a few games so far this season, but has largely been on the court at the G League level.

Boston Celtics call up Jordan Walsh – could his NBA debut be imminent?

If the former Razorback hopes to earn a shot at more run with Boston (assuming he even gets on the floor), he will have to avoid making too many defensive mistakes.

Could we be about to see the long-awaited season debut of Boston Celtics rookie wing Jordan Walsh with the team? The Arkansas alum has been playing with the Maine Celtics up in Portland so far this season, but has yet to log a single minute with the parent club that drafted him last summer.

Now, with the Celtics set to face off with the San Antonio Spurs — a ball club that is not exactly trying to win games this season as a franchise — and a number of Boston’s usual high-minutes players looking like they could be scratches for rest, we might finally see Walsh take the floor.

If the former Razorback hopes to earn a shot at more run with Boston (assuming he even gets on the floor), he will have to avoid making too many defensive mistakes, as he likely won’t be expected to take anything but the most open of shots.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast took a long look at what a Walsh debut might look like on a recent episode; check it out above!

Boston’s Jordan Walsh gets ‘incomplete’ grade on his season so far

The Celtics rookie has yet to appear in a regular season Celtics game at the NBA level.

The NBA has reached roughly a quarter way through its 2023-24 season by now, with some clarity about how each ball club’s rookies have done so far this season coming into focus. But not all teams have a rookie on their roster, and at least at the NBA level, not every team has seen how its newest players look given many teams, like the Boston Celtics, have yet to see their players on the court outside of a G League context.

For that reason, in a recent assessment by Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey of the league’s 2023 rookie class, Celtics first-year forward Jordan Walsh has earned himself an “incomplete” grade given the paucity of play from the Arkansas alum among his peers in the NBA.

“The Celtics might be the best team in the NBA, and they haven’t had a single minute logged by a rookie this season,” writes Bailey.

“Walsh, who was selected near the top of the second round, has appeared in 14 G League games, but he’s yet to debut for the big club.”

The 6-foot-7 forward has put up 13.9 points, 6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game in 29.6 minutes of floor time per game while shooting 42.4% from the floor overall, 31.1% from 3, and 68.0% from the stripe, his accuracy from all three contexts hinting that it could be a while before we see Walsh with the parent club.

Drew Peterson 2023-24 G League highlights: Welcome to the Boston Celtics

Able to put the ball on the floor and pass the rock in addition to shooting 40% from beyond the arc with the Skyforce this season, Peterson can defend well enough on the other end.

The Boston Celtics have signed former USC and Rice forward Drew Peterson (no, not that one), a 24-year-old 6-foot-9 native of Illinois who was most recently playing for the Sioux Falls Skyforce at the G League level this season.

Able to put the ball on the floor and pass the rock in addition to shooting 40% from beyond the arc with the Skyforce this season, Peterson can defend well enough on the other end, averaging a steal per game with Sioux Falls. Signing a two way deal with Boston will make the Libertyville High alum available for Boston 50 games this season when he is not playing with the Maine Celtics in Portland.

To get to know his game better, check out the clip embedded below put together by fan-favorite videographer Tomasz Kordylewski.

Boston’s Sam Hauser on Jordan Walsh’s growth with the Maine Celtics

“You can tell he’s got a lot of potential and a lot of talent, so I know he’s working really hard,” said Hauser.

Fans of the Boston Celtics were clamoring for rookie wing Jordan Walsh to get on the floor for at TD Garden, but the Arkansas alum has spent his entire season so far with the Maine Celtics honing his craft at the G League level.

But the Texas native has been putting in work, and it has caught the attention of teammates on the parent club’s roster, like forward Sam Hauser, who forged his own path to the league via time spent in Maine. “Jordan is coming along well,” said Hauser via MassLive’s Souichi Terada. “He’s young, he’s learning, but he’s been playing really well.”

“You can tell he’s got a lot of potential and a lot of talent, so I know he’s working really hard and every time he’s come back here it’s looked like he’s gotten better,” added the Virginia alum.

“I think you kind of have to have a balance,” said Hauser. “Work on the things that you know, like when you come up here, you’re going to have to do, and then also expanding your game as much as you can when you get the opportunity.”

“I think he’s done a good job of that so far, and I think when he does come up here, he’s probably going to be a defender, a spot-shooter and find a role on this team.”

Celtics waive two-way big man Nathan Knight

The Celtics have waived two-way big man Nathan Knight, the team announced on Tuesday.

The Boston Celtics have waived big man Nathan Knight, the team announced Tuesday afternoon. Knight had spent the entirety of the 2023-24 campaign with Boston’s G League affiliate, the Maine Celtics, where he averaged 8.9 points and 8.3 rebounds in 22.9 minutes per game. This move gives the Celtics an open two-way contract to consider, although it’s unlikely it signals any imminent move.

Knight originally signed a deal with Boston in October after he was waived by the New York Knicks. Born in upstate New York, Knight played college ball at William & Mary in Virginia. He joined the NBA as a member of the Atlanta Hawks during the 2020-21 season, and also logged minutes as a pro with the Minnesota Timberwolves. In his first career start in December 2021, Knight logged 20 points, 11 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block against the Celtics as a member of the Wolves.

The Maine Celtics are 7-5 this season, while the Boston Celtics are 16-5 at the time of this writing.
