Chiefs reportedly waived QB Ian Book on Monday

Kansas City #Chiefs reportedly waived QB Ian Book on Monday | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs waived quarterback Ian Book to get down to the NFL-mandated 53-man roster.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs are waving Book ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline for all teams before the start of the regular season. The former Notre Dame star appeared in all three Chiefs preseason games and received mixed reviews for his performance. He finished with 133 yards passing and two touchdowns without an interception but notably committed a late-game fumble in the second preseason game loss to the Detroit Lions.

During his illustrious college career, Book finished with the most wins as a quarterback in Notre Dame football history with 30 wins as a starter. He connected on 72 touchdown passes, placing him second all-time in the school’s history.

Book competed with Chris Oladokun for the third quarterback spot behind starter Patrick Mahomes and veteran backup Carson Wentz. The former 2021 fourth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints has spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Chiefs on January 10th of this year.

NFL’s All-Time Winningest Playoff Quarterbacks

Plenty of surprising things on this list. What stands out the most to you?

With Super Bowl 58 approaching, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is taking aim at more history.

He’s already as talented of player to ever play quarterback in the NFL and as one would expect, the wins have followed.  By beating the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship, Mahomes recorded his 14th career postseason win all-time which tied him for the third-most all-time.

Who else has Mahomes passed with playoff victories over the past couple of seasons?  And how far does he have to go before he catches the two remaining legends ahead of him?

Here is every starting quarterback to win six or more playoff games since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.  A somewhat surprising fact – of the 26 players to start and win six or more playoff games, they played their college football at 23 different colleges and universities.  One of just three teams to have more than one player accomplish the feat is Notre Dame – but before scrolling can you guess the other two?

PFF: Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is NFL’s highest graded player in two key situations

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is the NFL’s highest graded player in two key situations, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Kansas City Chiefs offense is among the most dynamic in the NFL and the wizardry of quarterback Patrick Mahomes has helped lift the franchise to new heights since he took over under center in 2018.

Mahomes was named league MVP for his efforts last season, and it is his run of dominance since 2020 that has come to define his five-year tenure as Kansas City’s signal caller.

According to Pro Football Focus, Mahomes is the NFL’s top-graded quarterback when his team is trailing and when he is outside of the pocket since 2020.

While this should come as no surprise to fans who have watched Mahomes dominate his competition in recent seasons, this achievement shouldn’t go unnoticed.

The reigning MVP will need to harness the same abilities that led him to these outstanding grades in 2023 as he looks to lift the Chiefs to a second-straight Super Bowl victory in Kansas City’s coming campaign.

New Netflix docu-series teases hilarious Daron Payne interaction

Daron Payne’s hilarious clip in new Netflix documentary “Quarterback”

On July 12th, Netflix debuted a new docu-series called “Quarterback” which follows three starting quarterbacks in the NFL and pulls the curtains back to see their lives more day-to-day and get some behind-the-scenes coverage of what it’s like to live the life of an NFL QB. The debut season is covering the Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, Kirk Cousins of the Minnesota Vikings and Marcus Mariota of the Atlanta Falcons.

Outside of getting to go behind the scenes and getting to see their lives outside football, it is a chance to see them mic’d up on the football field. The quarterbacks go back and forth arguing with defenders and the show really helps shed a light on the passion these guys have for the sport. It has not been announced who the show will follow in 2023 yet.

One of the funniest clips from the first season includes former Alabama defensive lineman, Daron Payne The Commands are hosting the Vikings and Cousins is dropping back in the pocket, he releases a deep bomb to Justin Jefferson, but as he releases the ball Payne breaks through the offensive linemen and smokes Cousins. You can see Cousins on the ground as the wind is knocked out of him.

As Daron Payne gets up off the turf, he taps Cousins on the behind and says, “You’ll be alright!” Right after Payne makes that comment, the medical team rushes out onto to field. Cousins was okay after the hit which makes the interaction okay to laugh about, but it shows the humor on that field that the viewer would typically miss out on.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes threw with Rashee Rice in Dallas before WRs draft selection

Patrick Mahomes worked out with Rashee Rice in Dallas earlier in the offseason before the #Chiefs drafted the talented receiver on Friday.

Bleacher Report analyst Adam Lefkoe got the inside scoop on Rashee Rice’s selection by the Kansas City Chiefs on the website’s B/N Gridiron Draft Night presentation. After making contact with Patrick Mahomes shortly after the pick was made, it was revealed by Lefkoe that Mahomes had thrown with Rashee Rice during one of his workouts in Texas earlier in the offseason, the players’ shared home state.

“I threw with him in Dallas,” Mahomes told Lefkoe, “You know I put my input on all offensive guys.”

This revelation could be a key indicator of Mahomes’ ability to get consistent production out of Rice next season, and after losing Mecole Hardman and Juju Smith-Schuster in free agency, the reigning MVP will need the help.

Kansas City will have a target on their back for the entirety of the 2023 season, and as reigning Super Bowl champions, history tells us that the team is likely to face an uphill battle in their pursuit to defend their title. The already-growing bond between Mahomes and Rice should help ease the burden, at least on the offensive side of the ball.

Super Bowl LVII: Staff Predictions

Who do you have winning on Sunday?

Football season ends on Sunday when the Eagles and Chiefs battle in Super Bowl LVII. Both are looking for their second title in the past six seasons.

Only one former Notre Dame player is on either roster. Quarterback [autotag]Ian Book[/autotag] is the third stringer for the Eagles. Forty-five former Fighting Irish players have won a Super Bowl. Will Book become No. 46? As predicted by most, Book is the first quarterback from the 2021 draft class to reach Super Bowl Sunday.

Here is what the Fighting Irish Wire squad sees happening as the 2022 NFL season comes to an end.

How Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ new-look offense took the Cardinals apart

Touchdown Wire’s Laurie Fitzpatrick goes to the film to diagnose how Patrick Mahomes was able to adjust to the Cardinals’ blitzes and coverages.

These two truths can co-exist. The Chiefs thrived on Tyreek Hill’s freak athleticism during scramble drills, and Patrick Mahomes can extend plays and navigate through a defense when under pressure.

We thought after the last few years watching Mahomes slice through defenses when facing a blitz, Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph wouldn’t rely on it to get his defense out on top on Sunday. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Even Next Gen Stats let us know that throughout Mahomes career, he has a +206.1 passing EPA vs the blitz, since 2018.

Andy Reid after the game, when asked about Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph blitzing, and how well Mahomes does against the blitz: “I joke about this, but it’s true he brings everybody but the popcorn vendor. He’s going to bring it from all over the place, and you better be sharp. [Mahomes] was directing everybody to get them going in the right direction, then Pat doing the same thing. I thought they did a nice job with that. [Joseph] is one heck of a coordinator. He’s very aggressive.”

So, the question is, how did Mahomes adjust to whatever it was the Cardinals were trying to accomplish? Let’s go to the film!

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes apologizes to fantasy football players for committee approach at WR

Patrick Mahomes confirms the #Chiefs will take a committee approach at the WR position: “There is going to be a different player every (week) that has the big game.”

The Kansas City Chiefs will get a chance to show the NFL world their new-look offense in its entirety against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1.

Things will be different this year, especially in the receiver room. They’ve seen a ton of turnover with Tyreek Hill’s trade to the Dolphins, plus Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle’s departures in free agency.

Our friend Pete Sweeney at Arrowhead Pride asked Patrick Mahomes what would surprise people about the new-look offense debuting on Sunday. Mahomes confirmed the greatest fear of fantasy football players everywhere and issued an apology in advance for it.

“The biggest thing, I think there is going to be a different player every single game that has the big game,” Mahomes told reporters. “It’s not going to be just necessarily Tyreek (Hill) and Travis (Kelce) every single week where it’s like one or the other that has a big game or both. Every single game it’s going to be somebody different. So, I’m sorry to all you fantasy football guys, but it’s going to come from everywhere. So you’re going to have to choose the right guy every week.”

In 2021, it was apparent that the Chiefs’ offense had become stale. The Star power of Kelce and Hill alone wasn’t enough to get the job done on a weekly basis and in the playoffs. The ability to attack opponents with a number of different receiving options should make this offense much more dangerous and successful. Unfortunately, that’s going to come at the expense of fantasy football players, who now will need to crack the code every week and figure out which receiver in Kansas City is due for a big performance.

How Mecole Hardman benefits in the Chiefs’ new Tyreek-less offense

Touchdown Wire’s Laurie Fitzpatrick goes to the film to see how Mecole Hardman can fill Tyreek Hill’s role in the Chiefs’ offense.

As we all are aware, the Kansas City Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins. The Chiefs will have a more balanced offense as Patrick Mahomes will be forced to spread the ball around, and what this means for receiver Mecole Hardman, is that Hardman finally gets his chance to shine.

Over the last two years, Hardman has come in as a fill-in for Hill, as they ran similar routes, or he came in as a fourth option alongside Hill, using his 4.33 speed to get vertical, opening the field for his teammates.

Mahomes said this when asked about Hardman, “He made a lot of big plays in big moments, especially at the end of last season. So, for me it’s for him to just continue to be himself. He doesn’t have to be Tyreek Hill; he has to be Mecole Hardman… He’s made a Pro Bowl already and I think he can keep getting better and better. Everybody puts out there he’s got to replace Tyreek. I think he can be his own player…”

Let’s dive into the film to see how Hardman is going to bring his versatility into the starting Chiefs offense!
