Steelers announce signing of former Jaguars WR Jaray Jenkins

The Steelers announced a swap of players on Monday.

On Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced the signing of wide receiver Jaray Jenkins and in a corresponding move, released cornerback Luq Barcoo to make room on the roster.

Jenkins was a UDFA in 2023 out of LSU. He spent the preseason with the Jaguars but was released before the regular season started. Jenkins started 20 games over four seasons with the Tigers and hauled in 89 receptions.

Here are some highlights from Jenkins career at LSU:

We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves but Jenkins was a very underrated player at LSU who was overshadowed by other players on the team at the time. He makes up for a lack of explosion and speed with excellent routes and solid timing. The Steelers have several guys vying for spots on the Steelers roster and we are interested to see if Jenkins can stick around.

Browns invite XFL standout cornerback Luq Barcoo to camp for a tryout

The XFL standout has a shot to compete for a roster spot.

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry will leave no stone unturned when it comes to scouting for potential roster additions. The team has now invited a cornerback for a camp tryout after he had a great season in the XFL. Cornerback Luq Barcoo, who previously played with the Jaguars, allowed just a 52.8 percent completion percentage when targeted this year according to PFF.

Barcoo is an instinctive player with a high football IQ and the ball skills to create turnovers and negative plays for opposing offenses. It will be an uphill battle for Barcoo to make the roster in a loaded cornerback room but he will be a name to follow in the coming weeks.

Chiefs to sign free agent CB Luq Barcoo

The #Chiefs are signing an intriguing free agent cornerback who led the FBS in interceptions in 2019.

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to sign an intriguing free agent at the cornerback position.

According to his agency, Synergy Sports International, former Jacksonville Jaguars, Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers CB Luqman “Luq” Barcoo is to sign with the Chiefs.

The FBS co-interception leader in the 2019 college football season, Barcoo actually had a pre-draft virtual meeting with the Chiefs in 2020. He ultimately signed on with the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent and like many who entered the NFL during the COVID-altered year, he didn’t get a fair shake to catch on with the team.

49ers roster moves: CB, WR added to practice squad

The #49ers shuffled their practice squad by adding a WR and CB, and releasing a WR.

The 49ers on Wednesday announced a couple practice squad moves, including the addition of wide receiver Devin Funchess which was originally reported by NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero on Tuesday afternoon. They also added cornerback Luq Barcoo and released wide receiver Austin Watkins.

Funchess was a second-round pick of the Panthers in the 2015 draft and actually had a little success with Carolina. In four seasons he played in 61 games and caught 161 passes for 2,233 yards and 21 touchdowns. He spent just one game with the Colts in 2019 and hasn’t played in a regular season game since. At 6-4, 225 pounds he brings unique size at a position where the 49ers could use some in-house depth.

Barcoo had a pre-draft visit with the 49ers in 2020, but ultimately landed with the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent. He played in three games with one start last season and racked up 10 tackles, one tackle for loss and a pass breakup. He was released by the Jaguars in August and spent some time on the Cardinals practice squad. In college at San Diego State Barcoo had 10 interceptions and 20 pass breakups in 22 games.

The 49ers originally added Watkins as an undrafted rookie this year and released him during camp. He was re-signed to the practice squad, but let go again to make room for the veteran Funchess.

Cardinals protect 4 on practice squad for Week 5

They choose to protect three defensive backs and an offensive lineman.

The Arizona Cardinals have protected four players on their practice squad in Week 5. NFL teams are able to keep up to four players from being signed by other teams each week.

This week, according to Tuesday’s NFL transaction report, the Cardinals protected these four players:

  • CB Luq Barcoo
  • OT Eric Smith
  • CB Jace Whittaker
  • S James Wiggins

Barcoo was recently signed to the practice squad after he was released last Thursday. With injuries to Byron Murphy and Antonio Hamilton, he might get called to duty this week.

Smith was elevated from the practice squad last week and played a pair of offensive snaps against the Los Angeles Rams. If Justin Murray and Kelvin Beachum don’t come back from injury this week, Smith could be elevated again.

Whittaker gives them special teams help and depth in the slot. If Hamilton can’t play this week, he likely will be the player they call up for the game,.

Wiggins has been protected for the second week in a row. He was drafted in the seventh round this year by the Cardinals.

With tight end Darrell Daniels landing on the COVID list on Wednesday, expect to see tight end Ross Travis elevated this week. He was not protected so he potentially could get signed by another team before that happens.

Cardinals release CB Luq Barcoo, suggesting potential return of LB Dennis Gardeck

Gardeck was designated to return from IR this week and could possibly be activated for the game against the Rams.

On the NFL transaction report Thursday, a roster move by the Arizona Cardinals appeared, one that was not announced. They released cornerback Luq Barcoo.

Barcoo thus far this season had not been active in three games. The team signed Antonio Hamilton from the practice squad to the active roster.

However, his release actually suggests a different roster move.

Linebacker Dennis Gardeck was designated for return from injured reserve this week. The Cardinals would need to open a roster spot to activate him this week.

Gardeck tore his ACL in December and then suffered a hand injury in practice in Week 1. His potential return could add a little oomph to the pass rush. He had seven sacks last season in only 93 defensive snaps.

The Cardinals might announce roster moves Friday or might wait until Saturday when they make decisions about what players on the practice squad to elevate to the active roster, but one to watch for is the potential return of Gardeck, who will impact play on special teams and also give some help on defense.

4 Cardinals who are surprises on the 53-man roster

These players who made the final roster initially might not be able to get too comfortable with other roster moves sure to come.

The Arizona Cardinals made final cuts to get to the requisite 53 players on the roster on Tuesday. They actually left the roster at 52 with two players also on the COVID list.

A few players initially have made the team who are surprises.

They can’t get too excited because there are still transactions to be made. Offensive lineman Justin Pugh and cornerback Robert Alford are sure to come off the COVID reserve soon. When both return, one player will have to be cut as of now.

There could also be waiver claims, trades and free agent signings after players have cleared waivers.

Who are the players who are at least mild surprises for the roster?

Cardinals sign CB Luq Barcoo after ‘administrative procedural things’

He was claimed by the Cardinals off waivers, waived with a failed physical designation and then re-signed Wednesday.

Cornerback Luq Barcoo is now a member of the Arizona Cardinals, but it was interesting how it happened. He was originally awarded on a waiver claim after he was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, on Monday, he was waived by the Cardinals with a failed physical designation.

He was re-signed on Wednesday.

So what happened? Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said Wednesday it was “some administrative procedural things.”

He is a player the Cardinals want to see. “I’m excited to see him on Saturday,” he said.

Barcoo was an undrafted rookie our of San Diego State in 2020 who signed with teh Jaguars.

He played in three games last season, starting once. He finished with 10 tackles and a pass breakup.

He offers length at 6-1 and weisgh 175 pounds.

While at San Diego State, Barcoo was an All-American and first-team All-Mountain West selection after leading the nation with nine interceptions and 16 passes defensed as a senior in 2019. The 23-year old Barcoo left the program ranked second in school history with 10 interceptions despite playing just two seasons.

He has some extreme athleticism.

At his own pro day, he rane the 40 in 4.41 seconds  a 41-inch vertical, and a 4.41 40-yard dash.

Kingsbury made it sound like he would get a lot of playing time this weekend, as they look to evaluate him in terms of defense and special teams.

Jags activate safety Daniel Thomas from Reserve/COVID-19 list, waive CB Luq Barcoo

Thomas, who was a fifth round pick who flashed for the Jags last season, now has a chance to play in the team’s second preseason game against the Saints.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made some roster moves Thursday by activating safety Daniel Thomas from the Reserve/COVID-19 list. The team also waived cornerback Luq Barcoo alongside the decision.

Thomas was placed on Reserve/COVID-19 on Aug. 6, so he’s been on the list for nearly two weeks. Now, with his activation, he has a chance to play in Monday’s game against the New Orleans Saints and push for a roster spot.

At the moment, the Jags have Thomas as their No. 3 safety behind Rayshawn Jenkins and Andrew Wingard. He’s there at the No. 3 spot alongside Brandon Rusnak, so it appears a good performance could be needed to stick around through the next wave of cuts.

The Jags drafted Thomas last season in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He registered two starts and played in 10 games before going on injured reserve last November. He exited his rookie season with 18 combined tackles, and blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown.

As for Barcoo, the Jags signed him as an undrafted free agent out of San Diego State last season. He played in three games for the Jags and started in one and was able to accumulate 10 total tackles as a rookie.

Jags CB Luq Barcoo activated from Reserve/COVID-19 list

The Jaguars’ Reserve/COVID-19 list got smaller Thursday as CB Luq Barcoo was activated from it.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be getting one of their cornerbacks back from Reserve/COVID-19 as the team announced that Luq Barcoo was activated on Thursday. This news comes after Barcoo was placed on the list six days ago alongside cornerback CJ Henderson.

Barcoo, 23, is entering his second-year with the Jags after going undrafted out of San Diego State last season. He participated in three games and started in one for them, which came against the Cleveland Browns. He ultimately finished his rookie season with 10 combined tackles, seven of which were solo.

Barcoo will compete within a crowded cornerback group that has notables like Henderson, Shaquill Griffin, Tyson Campbell, Sidney Jones IV, and Tre Herndon on it. Despite his undrafted status, Barcoo made the Jags’ initial 53-man roster last season after flashing in training camp, but this year it may be a bit harder to do. Still, it’s good to see him return to the field and compete as he’ll try to defy the odds once again.
