Arkansas is “tough, nasty” says Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell

And the Razorbacks wouldn’t want it any other way.

The place will be packed. Luke Fickell knows that.

The Cincinnati coach has spent a lot of this week preparing his team for the expected hostilities of the Arkansas crowd inside Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium on Saturday when the two teams open their respective seasons.

“It’s going to be a tough, nasty game, just like the environment’s going to be,” Fickell said. “I think they pride themselves in things like that. We pride ourselves in things like that.”

The truth is both teams have plenty to gain, but plenty to lose, too. Arkansas is ranked No. 19 in the Associated Press poll and No. 23 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. The Bearcats are No. 23 and No. 22 in the same. Such a preseason ranking shows the teams are expected to be good enough to make a run toward the College Football Playoff if things go right. If they don’t go right, however, well, that’s a different story.

Cincinnati has won five straight true road games. They lost in the CFP last year to Alabama on a neutral site. Fickell remembered how that environment troubled his team a bit.

“What the environment and atmosphere comes down to is your emotions,” he said. “But it’s not like you’re going to trigger those kinds of motions in a practice based on the environment.”

The DWRRS capacity is 76,000. No stadium in the American Athletic Conference, where Cincinnati plays, can match that. The two closest are professional stadiums, but South Florida and Temple don’t come close to meeting their capacities.

Fickell said he is looking forward to the challenge.

“Wanting these guys to experience the environments like we’re going to play in on Saturday, but also the environments of what a college campus feels like when there’s a buzz, what a community feels like when there’s a buzz.”

CBS Sports picks a very familiar face for USC in its bowl game

It would be an amazing story if Lincoln Riley faced Luke Fickell — a man who was part of the USC coaching search last year — in a New Year’s Six bowl game.

Remember Luke Fickell? He used to work under a man named Mike Bohn at Cincinnati. For that reason, and because Cincinnati was having such a great 2021 college football season, Fickell was a natural choice to be hired by Bohn at USC.

Fickell eventually stayed at Cincinnati, but he was definitely a coach USC fans got to know about in 2021. It’s true that Matt Campbell of Iowa State became the big name on the board in the 48 hours before Lincoln Riley was hired, but in September and October, it was impossible to avoid discussing Fickell in connection with the USC job.

As we turn to the upcoming 2022 season, imagine a world in which Fickell faces USC — and Lincoln Riley, and Mike Bohn — in a New Year’s Six bowl game. Wouldn’t that be something?

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports is predicting this precise matchup in his preseason bowl picks.

Palm has USC playing Cincinnati in the Cotton Bowl, which will be in Arlington, Texas, on Monday, Jan. 2, 2023, at 10 a.m. in Los Angeles.

Palm has Utah winning the Pac-12, beating USC in the Pac-12 Championship Game, and moving to the Rose Bowl against Michigan.

Three group of five coaches that would be great fits in the Big Ten

Three group of five football coaches who would be great fits in the #BigTen

The Group of Five conferences are great breeding grounds for power five conferences looking to hire head coaches who have experience and are still likely young and up and coming. Purdue hired Jeff Brohm after he showed off his skill at Western Kentucky, Scott Frost was electric during his time at UCF before Nebraska plucked him away. Mike Locksley had a stint at New Mexico before landing at Maryland.

OK, as I re-read those examples, I realize that they aren’t shining examples of success, but the point remains that it would not be shocking to see a Group of Five coach make the jump to the Big Ten and succeed. The following are three perfect fits to perhaps make that move.

Big 12 fans are looking quite favorably on the Oklahoma Sooners according to a survey by The Athletic

In a survey produced by The Athletic, Big 12 fans are feeling pretty good about Oklahoma heading into the 2022 season.

Over the last several weeks over at The Athletic, Max Olson put and their staff put together a survey for Big 12 fans to take to share their thoughts on the coaching changes, NIL, Oklahoma and Texas moving to the SEC, and a host of other topics.

It was a fun read to get a sense of how the fanbases in the Big 12 are feeling this spring with just a few months before the start of the regular season.

Easily the most intriguing response was that TCU fans are only moderately happy with new head coach Sonny Dykes. He’s barely been there and he’s had the second-lowest score when TCU fans were asked, “How would you rate your happiness with your team’s head coach right now on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the happiest)?” Dykes average score was 6.64 out of ten. The guy that finished beneath him was West Virginia’s head coach Neal Brown.

So let’s look at how Big 12 fanbases responded to some of the more pertinent Oklahoma Sooners questions.

Albert Breer: Titans and Desmond Ridder ‘worth keeping an eye on’

Desmond Ridder is one of several QBs the Titans have done their homework on in the pre-draft process.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill is on the hot seat following his disastrous showing in the playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, which has led many to speculate that the team could draft a signal-caller in 2022.

While it doesn’t appear he has any inside information on the matter, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer believes we should be “keeping an eye on” Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder for Tennessee.

“Is there one (quarterback) he’d (general manager Jon Robinson) be interested in? It’s worth keeping an eye on Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder. I’ve heard that Bearcats coach Luke Fickell and his staff have really talked Ridder up privately to NFL teams. And Fickell’s best friend happens to be Mike Vrabel, the Titans’ head coach.”

Not only are Fickell and Vrabel best friends, but the UC head coach was also the best man at Vrabel’s wedding. If there’s one college coach whose word Vrabel will trust, it’s Fickell’s.

The Titans were in attendance at Ridder’s pro day workout recently, but they’ve been doing their due diligence on all of the top quarterbacks in this year’s class, so there isn’t anything extra to glean from that.

If the Titans indeed have their sights set on Ridder, they might have to jump on him at No. 26 overall. Tennessee doesn’t own a second-round pick and there’s a good chance Ridder will be gone by No. 90 overall.

No matter what, general manager Jon Robinson should be doing his best to bridge the gap between his team’s first- and third-round selections.

A win-now team like the Titans faces quite the conundrum when thinking about taking a quarterback in the first round.

Any quarterback the Titans draft won’t help them until 2023 at the earliest with Tannehill locked-in for this coming season, and the team has more immediate needs at wide receiver and offensive line.

Then again, there’s no guarantee selections at any of those positions will provide an immediate impact, as we’ve seen in recent years.

With all that said, good franchise quarterbacks don’t grow on trees and if the Titans feel very strongly about Ridder, they should jump on him. In a perfect world, that moment would come on Day 2 at the earliest.

Alabama’s all-time record against Cincinnati

A look at the series history between Alabama and Cincinnati

We have finally made it to game week ladies and gentlemen! After what seemed like an entire offseason’s worth without a game, the wait is over.

On Friday, Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide are set to face off against Luke Fickell and the Cincinnati Bearcats in the prestigious Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

The winner will have a shot at the national championship that will take place on Jan. 10.

Before kickoff, let’s take a look at the series history between the Tide and the Bearcats.

Alabama and Cincinnati met for the first time in Birmingham all the way back in 1908. Led by head coach J.W.H. Pollard, Alabama won the contest 16-0.

The Crimson Tide and Bearcats would not meet again until 1982 when Alabama defeated Cincinnati 21-3 in coach Bryant’s final season.

The two programs would meet another three times over the next several seasons with Alabama winning each of them. Overall, Alabama holds a 5-0 series advantage over the Bearcats of Cincinnati.

Friday’s contest will be the first between the two schools since 1990. It is without question the most important matchup between the two schools in series history.

Report: Lions interviewed Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell for Detroit’s head coaching vacancy last year

The Lions interviewed Cincinnati Bearcats coach Luke Fickell for Detroit’s head coaching vacancy last year

The Cincinnati Bearcats are heading to the College Football Playoff after running the table and winning the AAC Championship on Saturday. Head coach Luke Fickell authored an unbeaten season on the heels of a very successful 2020 campaign at the mid-major school.

A report from Tom Pelissero of NFL.com indicates that the Lions had some serious interest in hiring Fickell last year. Detroit interviewed Fickell for the then-vacant head coaching position after the 2020 NFL season,

The Detroit Lions quietly spoke with Fickell about their head coaching vacancy last year before they hired Dan Campbell, sources say, and the expectation within the league is Fickell will be in the mix for NFL jobs again in the upcoming hiring cycle, if he’s interested.

The Lions showed real interest in the top college coaches before hiring Dan Campbell, then the assistant head coach of the New Orleans Saints. Detroit heavily courted Iowa State coach Matt Campbell, enough that Matt — not Dan — was briefly the odds-on favorite for the Lions head coaching job.
