REPORT: Alabama adds former Michigan assistant to coaching staff ahead of CFP

Alabama makes an interesting hire ahead of the CFP semifinal matchup against Michigan

There has been a longstanding joke that during Nick Saban’s dynasty in Tuscaloosa, Coach Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide have been playing chess while everybody else is playing checkers.

On Thursday, even more evidence of that theory came to life with the report that Saban has hired former Michigan assistant George Helow to the Alabama coaching staff ahead of the Tide’s College Football Playoff semifinal matchup against the Wolverines.

Helow spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Wolverines in Ann Arbor before the two parties mutually split in February of 2023.

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic was the first to report the news.

Helow has experience in Tuscaloosa as well, serving as a defensive intern in 2012. Helow’s new role in Tuscaloosa has yet to be announced publicly.

Alabama’s birth in the CFP created a ton of controversy on Sunday, but considering the Crimson Tide’s complete body of work, it is more than clear that Saban and Alabama are among the four best teams in the country.

On Sunday following the selection announcement, both Saban and Harbough would give their early thoughts on facing one another in the national semifinals.

Below is what each head coach had to say:

Bama Report Card: Grading Alabama’s Cotton Bowl win over Cincinnati

It’s been nearly 24 hours since No. 1 Alabama handled business in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic defeating No. 4 Cincinnati 27-6. So we are going to enjoy the next few hours of this victory before shifting our focus over to the Georgia Bulldogs.

As we reflect on Alabama’s win for just a little longer, I thought we could take a look at how each side of the ball graded out in the playoff semifinals.

Let’s get right to it!

First …the offense…

Alabama’s 5 impact players in Cotton Bowl win over Cincinnati

No. 1 Alabama ended 2021 with a dominating playoff semifinal victory over No. 4 Cincinnati 27-6. The Tide controlled the contest from start to finish and the game was never really in doubt for Alabama.

Alabama suffocated the Cincinnati offense, holding the Bearcats to a mere 218 yards of total offense.

Offensively, Alabama dominated in the running game. The Tide rushed for 301 yards, averaging 6.4 yards per attempt.

Now that the dust has settled and the calendar has turned over to 2022, let’s take a look at five Alabama players who made the biggest impact on the semifinal victory.

Alabama takes out Cincinnati 27-6; advances to 6th CFP National Championship Game in 8 years

Alabama is heading back to the CFP National Championship Game!

The Crimson Tide officially ended the Cinderella story being told by the No. 4 Cincinnati Bearcats in the 2021 CFP semifinal matchup being played in Dallas, TX in the Cotton Bowl with a 27-6 win to advance to the CFP National Championship Game.

The ending was nowhere near dramatic and the end result was rarely, if ever, in doubt if you’re a Crimson Tide fan.

Nick Saban and the Tide will go on to play in their sixth CFP National Championship game since the game’s inception during the 2014 football season. Alabama is 3-2 in those previous matchups.

The Alabama defense was suffocating throughout the evening, allowing just 218 total yards, including just 74 on the ground. Sacks were being handed out like bags of Krystal burgers, as the Tide collected six on the evening. Will Anderson Jr tallied two sacks to bring his yearly total to 17.5.

Bryce Young passed for just 181 yards, but he only completed 17 throws out of just 28. His arm did contribute three touchdown passes on the day, giving the Tide the most bulk in terms of points.

The Alabama rushing attack was ruthless. Brian Robinson hit 204 yards on 26 attempts, averaging 7.8 yards per carry. Trey Sanders added 68 yards on 14 tries.

The Crimson Tide will go on to face the winner of Michigan vs. Georgia in the CFP National Championship on Jan. 10.

Brooks is coming on strong in the absence of John Metchie. Brooks is Alabama’s leading receiver in the first half with 68 yards on three catches.

So far Young is 12-20 for 130 yards and two touchdowns.

Bryce Young has only attempted five passes so far connecting on three for 36 yards.

No. 1 Alabama opened the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic with a physically dominating first drive. The Tide capped off the drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Young to Slade Bolden.

The touchdown pass was the only passing attempt that Young had on the drive as Alabama leaned on Brian Robinson Jr. for 37 yards on six carries.

If Alabama can continue its dominating rushing attack, it will be a long day for the Bearcat defense.

College Football Playoff semifinals: How to bet Cincinnati vs. Alabama, Georgia vs. Michigan

The College Football Playoffs are ready to get underway, so let’s take a look at how to bet the semis.

The College Football Playoff semifinals have finally arrived as we get ready to close out 2021. Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, and Cincinnati are all hoping to get a chance to play for a title, starting today at 3:30pm ET with the Crimson Tide and Bearcats squaring off in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. The Bulldogs and Wolverines close things out at 7:30pm ET in the Capital One Orange Bowl.

Let’s take a look at how to bet the semis, with all odds courtesy of Tipico Sportsbook.

4 Cincinnati vs. 1 Alabama

This has to be one of the most intriguing matchups in semifinal history. Playoff mainstay Alabama will take on Cincinnati, the first Group of Five team to reach the CFP.

Alabama is favored by 14.5 points over its undefeated opponent, earning the benefit of not only its own recent championship history but also that of its conference. The SEC annually pumps out title contenders, while the AAC finally has a playoff representative after perceived snubs of the past.

The doubt that follows Group of Five teams in games against Power 5 opponents is what makes Cincinnati’s run to 13-0 and a meeting with Alabama so intriguing, but that’s likely where Ciderella’s story ends.

The Bearcats hang their hats on defense, holding opponents to 16.1 points per game this season, tied with fellow CFP semifinalist Michigan for fourth-best in Division I. They were second in the nation in opponent passing yards per game, giving up just 168.3. However, they’ve never seen a player the caliber of Heisman winner Bryce Young. And based on what he was able to do against Georgia in the SEC title game, Cincinnati won’t be a match, either.

In a tougher conference, Georgia finished third in opponent passing yards per game, right behind Cincinnati at 172.2. And the Bulldogs led the nation in opponent scoring, giving up just 9.5 points per game. Additionally, Georgia was tougher against the run. Yet, Young passed for over 400 yards and three touchdowns and added another touchdown on the ground against the Bulldogs.

While Cincinnati’s defense will have its hands full with him, its offense will have to contend with a Crimson Tide defense that is no slouch itself. While not dominant in the way Alabama defenses have been in the past, they’ve only allowed 20 points per contest this season and they finished as a top-four unit in opponent rushing yards per game. If Alabama can make Cincinnati one-dimensional, that puts a lot of pressure on quarterback Desmond Ridder to go blow-for-blow with Young. That’s unfair to ask of anyone this year.

Bet: Alabama -14.5

3 Georgia vs. 2 Michigan

As mentioned earlier, both Michigan and Georgia boast stout defensive units, so this game will come down to which offense can consistently break through for points.

The clash between Michigan’s rushing attack – led by All-American Hassan Haskins and Blake Corum – and Georgia’s rush defense is a true battle of strengths. If Michigan’s Week 5 game against Wisconsin’s similarly stout defense is any indication, Georgia will be able to bottle Haskins up. Wisconsin held him to 47 yards on 19 carries. And the next best rush defense Michigan played, Iowa, held Haskins 56 yards on 17 carries.

However, the Wolverines still scored 38 and 42 points in those games, respectively, and found a way to win both. So even if Haskins struggles to find lanes, a defense led by Heisman finalist Aidan Hutchinson – and quarterback Cade McNamara’s ability to limit mistakes – keeps them in games.

Georgia gets slightly better quarterback play from Stetson Bennett, but with Hutchinson and David Ojabo rushing the quarterback, the Bulldogs may want to keep the ball on the ground as much as possible. This could make for a lower-scoring game, but ultimately Georgia will have more opportunities to make something happen on offense.

If the Bulldogs can force turnovers, this one can get out of hand. But Michigan is one of the nation’s best teams at holding on to the ball, so it’s more Georgia wins it in a nail-biter.

Bet: Michigan +7.5
