WATCH: Jay Ward’s interception of Rhett Rodgriguez sets up another score

Jay Ward came close to a pick six…

Following the missed field goal from Cade York, it seemed like some weird things going on in Death Valley. The LSU Tigers were up 7-0 with ULM in possession of the football deep in their own territory. The Warhawks faced a third down and 14 to go, Jay Ward stepped in front of the receiver and picked off the pass. He would return it all the way for a touchdown, or so we thought.

After a review, it put the ball on the 34-yard line in ULM territory where Ward stepped out of bounds. The Tigers were still in a prime position to put some points on the board early in the second quarter.

A pass to Devonta Lee fell incomplete in the end zone. On second down Trey Palmer slipped on a corner route that could have been a touchdown. This put pressure on Max Johnson to put points on the board. Rushing to his left, he threw across his body to the middle of the field that fell to the turn. Cade York would come onto the field to put three on the board for the Bayou Bengals.

Tigers lead 10-0.

WATCH: Max Johnson scores his first rushing touchdown of the year

No. 14 gets LSU on the board first.

The LSU Tigers were looking for a fast start in this game after the offense has come to a screeching halt in recent weeks. The team opted to go on defense first as they kicked off to the ULM Warhawks, giving LSU the ball to start the second half.

After the defense was able to fore the Warhawks punt, the offense was ready to take the field led by quarterback Max Johnson.

The offense got deep into ULM territory on a screen to the freshman wide receiver Malik Nabers. Once they got down the field, Ty Davis-Price was able to get them deep into the red zone. It was up to No. 14 to finish off the drive and give the Tigers their first lead of the game.

On the ensuing drive, the ULM Warhawks were able to drive all the way down the field deep into LSU territory. A fourth-down stand in a goal-to-go situation prevented them from getting on the scoreboard.

LSU vs ULM: How to watch the in-state battle between the Tigers and Warhawks

How to tune in for the LSU-ULM game on Saturday night from Death Valley.

The final nonconference game has arrived for the LSU Tigers as they head into the final two weeks of the season.

The ULM Warhawks come into Death Valley with an identical 4-6 record. The Tigers need a win this week and against Texas A&M to see the postseason. First things first, taking care of business with an in-state school.

The big question of the week was who would play quarterback. Neither Max Johnson nor Garrett Nussmeier really took a firm hold of the starting gig. However, after Nussmeier decided to redshirt this year, that left it all to Johnson. The hope is that he can remain healthy for the rest of the year. He is the only scholarship quarterback left on the roster. Of course, that could change against Texas A&M if Nuss is needed and they burn his redshirt season.

If something were to happen, walk-on freshman quarterback Matt O’Dowd will be thrust into action. Against ULM that probably wouldn’t be much of a problem, next week against the Aggies would be a different story. If the Tigers build up a big enough lead, you might see the young quarterback get a shot to be on the field.

It is likely we see the LSU offense light up the scoreboard, based on the fact that the Warhawks defense gives up a lot of yards and points.

LSU vs ULM: Staff predictions and expert picks for Tigers-Warhawks

Staff predictions: LSU a lot, ULM not a lot

With LSU and ULM set to kick off on Saturday night down on the Bayou, we give our predictions for the game.

Lance Dawe, Contributor

LSU handles business against a ULM team that is on a bit of a slide. Will there be offensive bumps in the road with Max Johnson? Probably. But not enough to give the Warhawks a chance to win.

LSU 45, ULM 6

Looking at this matchup, it just looks like an opportunity to work some things out for the LSU Tigers. Their offense needs to build some confidence based on the last few weeks. In the last three games, the Tigers have the 124th-ranked offense in points per play, 0.189. With Nussmeier redshirting, it will be up to Johnson to get them back on track.

LSU vs ULM: Tigers vs Warhawks in the “Tale of the Tape”

Breaking down the LSU-ULM game in the tale of the tape.

Not sure if you have heard but the LSU Tigers have an opportunity to get their fifth win of the season. This one comes against in-state rivals the ULM Warhawks, I used the term rivals very loosely. These teams have met on the football field just three times since 2003. The Tigers have won each time by a combined 131-7 margin. The Warhawks’ lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter of the first-ever matchup.

[lawrence-related id=30067]

There has been a false narrative that the LSU Tigers have nothing to play for in the final two games after losing five of the last six games. They still have a bowl game on the table, they just have to get through ULM and Texas A&M. If they can find a way to win both, they will get to a bowl game. Why is playing in a lower-tier bowl game important?

It might not be the sexy bowl matchups that were being dreamed of heading into the season but it isn’t just the game itself. With a bowl game, you get extra practice days. More time for the younger players on the team to get reps, especially if we see some players who might be NFL draft prospects opting out. While Ed Orgeron won’t be back, it remains to be seen if some of the staff are holdovers. Their evaluations will be critical for the next head coach of the LSU Tigers.

LSU vs ULM Game Preview

Why ULM Will Win

It’s a funky Warhawk team coached by Terry Bowden and an excellent staff that got extremely creating throughout the year just to get to four wins.

There isn’t any one thing this team does well, but it does a great job at not screwing up. It doesn’t have a huge turnover issue – outside of a few rough games – it takes the ball away, and it’s one of the best teams in the country at limiting penalties.

Just how much is LSU going to care?

This isn’t the final home game – that’s next week against Texas A&M. The program is playing out the string losing five of its last six games – with only the strange win over Florida as a brief respite of fun.

When ULM comes up with three takeaways, it usually wins. LSU might not be ultra-focused, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why LSU Will Win

ULM doesn’t have enough of an offense to keep up if LSU give even a decent effort here. The Warhawk offensive line gives up a ton of plays in the backfield, there isn’t a downfield passing game, and LSU should be able to take advantage of it all.

The Tigers are great at getting into the backfield, the pass rush should own the game for stretches, and when it comes to penalties, LSU is the best in the nation in fewest yards on flags.

What’s Going To Happen

After such a painfully disappointing season, LSU is going to want to have some fun.

It’s been a rough run, but now there’s a break for the first time since beating Central Michigan back in mid-September.

The offense will be balanced against the ULM defense, the defense will come up with enough third down big plays to matter, and the team will keep alive bowl hopes with Texas A&M to close things out next week.

LSU announces uniform combination for the ULM game

Switching it up against ULM.

The traditional look for the LSU Tigers has been the gold pants, white jerseys, and gold pants for home games but for the second time this season they are switching it up. Much as they did against Central Michigan, the Tigers will bust out the purple jersey.

The only difference was they still had the hold helmets and pants for that game.

Scott Clause/The Advertiser via USA TODAY NETWORK

They announced on Twitter that the Tigers will change out the pants and helmets with the white look. This is a look that we are familiar with, they wore it against Vanderbilt in the 2019 season.

While the history of LSU football has been the white and gold combination, it is always refreshing to mix it up every once in a while. Maybe the Deion Sanders mentality will ring true on Saturday.

LSU vs UL-Monroe: Short series history filled with Tigers domination

A look the brief series history between LSU and ULM, dominated by the Tigers.

The series history between these two Louisiana schools is very short-lived. In fact, they have met on the football field just three times in their history. All three games have taken place since the year 2003. In the three games of the series, the Warhawks have scored a combined seven points. All three games were played in Death Valley, on Saturday it will become the fourth game in Baton Rouge for these two schools.

The 2003 season was a magical year for the LSU Tigers, it was the first time they won a national championship since the 1950s. In 1958 under head coach Paul Dietzel, the Tigers won the national championship. In 2003 when these two teams met, LSU would eventually get over the hump under head coach Nick Saban. The team was led by quarterback Matty Mauck who threw for three touchdowns in the game. In the second and third quarters combined, the Tigers outscored ULM 42-0 as they cruised to the win 49-7.

LSU football opens as huge favorite over ULM

LSU is a huge favorite over ULM.

LSU is projected to do something they haven’t done since September.

Blow a team out.

LSU has opened as a monstrous favorite over Louisiana Monroe, who started the season off 4-3 but has now found themselves in a rough spot at 4-6 with a desperation win needed to get to a bowl game.

Oddsmakers say the Warhawks won’t get it against LSU.

LSU (4-6, 2-5 SEC) is also looking to stay in the bowl hunt, but a tough 16-13 loss to Arkansas last weekend might have sealed LSU’s fate. The Tigers have to face Texas A&M to finish the season, and it’s not looking like LSU will be getting that bowl-clinching win.

LSU leads the all-time series vs Lousiana Monroe 3-0 winning by an average of 41.3 points. ULM has only scored a touchdown once in this series (2003).

The win probability for the final two regular season games

Two games left, does LSU have a chance?

Despite losing five of the last six games, there is still some hope for the LSU Football team. The lone win came against a team in the Florida Gators that struggled with Samford on Saturday. Not going to style point that win since they have been hard to come by this year.

This week the Tigers get a break in the schedule, the UL-Monroe Warhawks are the first team since they played Mississippi State in late September that wasn’t ranked. It has been a rough string of games for LSU.

The team has to focus on ignoring how they got here and go 1-0 on Saturday. They will then close out the regular season against Texas A&M in the final home game of the Ed Orgeron era. Can they find a way to get into the postseason?

We breakdown how ESPN’s Football Power Index sees it:
