LSU vs Central Michigan: Preview, prediction and why the game is close

A full preview of the LSU-Central Michigan game. Why this game is a win or a close call. Plus who do we see as the winner?

Saturday night in Death Valley, it really doesn’t get much better than that when it comes to game atmosphere and electricity. While the Central Michigan Chippewas aren’t the sexiest matchup for the LSU Tigers, they need to come out and dominate a team from the MAC.

A familiar foe returns to Baton Rouge in Jim McElwain, he has a 1-1 record against Ed Orgeron in head-to-head action. Does McElwain have the talent on his side to knock off the Bayou Bengals at Tiger Stadium?

On the flip side, LSU needs this win ahead of next week’s game. Our colleagues at The Daily Advertiser see this game like a runaway with the Tigers coming out on top 41-14.

McElwain has increased Central Michigan’s talent level, but it’s not on LSU’s level. The Tigers celebrate after a fun night in Death Valley.

We break down the reasons this game is a win for LSU, a close call against Central Michigan, x-factors, and who wins.

LSU vs Central Michigan: How to watch, listen, or stream the game

How you can tune into the LSU Tigers-Central Michigan Chippewas game on Saturday night.

Game three of the 2021 season gets underway on Saturday night in Death Valley. LSU looks to improve its record to 2-1 before jumping into SEC play against Mississippi State. The Tigers need a good performance to build some confidence before getting into the thick of conference play.

Head coach Ed Orgeron stated that most of the offensive line would be available for this game minus left tackle Cam Wire. Chasen Hines and Austin Deculus both return after missing the McNeese game. The offensive line as a whole needs to show a level of physicality in this game.

On defense, the group needs to build off of the McNeese game, they harrassed the Cowboys quarterback Cody Orgeron for most of the game. They racked up eight sacks and gave up just the one score on a 44-yard screen play. Limiting the big plays and getting to the quarterback is what they need to show this Saturday.

LSU Morning Rush: Austin Deculus will return against Central Michigan

LSU Morning Rush features Austin Deculus returning, jersey selection for Saturday, and Joe Burrow dishes on the Tigers team.

On a gameday eve edition of the LSU Morning Rush, we highlight the return of Austin Deculus against Central Michigan. Which jerseys will be worn Saturday, and what Joe Burrow has to say about the LSU team.

Austin Deculus will play against Central Michigan

Following the Thursday practice, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said that Austin Deculus will play against the Chippewas. The only offensive line starter that will be out is Cam Wire. It is unclear if Xavier Hill will get the nod or Charles Turner at left tackle. Turner rotating in during the UCLA game at left tackle and played right tackle against McNeese.

LSU will wear purple jerseys against Central Michigan

The LSU Tigers won’t wear their normal white jersey at home against the Central Michigan Chippewas. According to a tweet from the equipment account on Twitter, they will rock the purple jersey for this showdown in Death Valley.

Joe Burrow dishes on the LSU Tigers

According to the Sports Illustrated LSU website, former Tigers QB Joe Burrow discussed his former team.

“That was a tough one but they got a great coaching staff that’ll get that right,” Burrow said on The Dan Patrick Show. “The physicality was lacking a little bit and if I know Coach O that’s not gonna last very long.” – Burrow on the lack of physicality

The team has always had a physical aura around them, which seems to be lacking this year. Orgeron is a coach that preaches being physical on both sides of the ball. Offensively speaking, they are anything but physical through two games. They need to come out against Central Michigan and enforce their will on the Chippewas.

“You need momentum early in the season to gain more and more momentum, it keeps snowballing,” Burrow said. “We felt giving up a big lead, coming back and winning the game and making big plays when they count, it’s going to serve us well going forward.” – Burrow on the win over Minnesota

Expert picks for the LSU-Central Michigan game on Saturday

Everyone is picking LSU to win over Central Michigan but how close will the game be?

Just over 48 hours to kick off on Saturday night in Death Valley. The LSU Tigers look to improve to 2-1 before they open SEC play on the road against Mississippi State in Starkville.

During week one of the season, Saturday’s opponent gave Missouri a scare at home. Can the Tigers avoid a scare and put this game away relatively early on? Head coach Ed Orgeron hopes going up-tempo can put the offense on the attack and put points on the board.

LSU vs Central Michigan Injuries: Ali Gaye and Jay Ward out Saturday

The LSU Tigers could be without a total of four starters for the game against Central Michigan.

For the second straight week the LSU Tigers defense will be without two key starters. Ali Gaye and Jay Ward are out for the game according to head coach Ed Orgeron. Gaye and Ward are both listed as having “undisclosed” injuries.

It is likely that Gaye would play in this game if it were an SEC game, no reason to rush him or Ward back against Central Michigan, a team that the Tigers shouldn’t struggle with. We will put an emphasis on shouldn’t.

The LSU defense has plenty of depth at defensive end/edge rusher with BJ Ojulari and Andre Anthony. Both players recorded sacks against McNeese last Saturday.

[listicle id=24465]

As for the safety spot, expect another heavy dose of Jordan Toles and Cam Lewis. “I think Cam Lewis has done a good job and so has Jordan Toles.” Orgeron continued, “both of those guys got to play and do a good job, they’ve had a good week of practice. They’re gonna be challenged but I think they’re up for the challenge.”

The team will once again be without starting left tackle Cam Wire and right tackle Austin Deculus is questionable for Saturday. Offensive guard Chasen Hines is probable after missing the McNeese game. Charles Turner will likely be back at right tackle against Central Michigan, while Xavier Hill mans the left tackle spot.

LSU Offense: Orgeron wants to go ‘warp speed’ against Central Michigan

Hopefully this plan works for Ed Orgeron and the LSU Tigers.

Going into fall camp, there was a level of optimism going into the 2021 campaign. The team was going back to the Joe Brady offense they helped win them a national championship. To do so, the LSU Tigers hired two Joe Brady assistants from Carolina in Jake Peetz and DJ Mangas.

The only problem is that during the two weeks to open the season this offense has looked like anything but a Joe Brady system. These two coaches are in their first season with the Tigers, so one shouldn’t expect them to hit the ground running as soon as the team broke camp.

After watching the team struggle to move the ball consistently against UCLA and McNeese, it is time to speed up the offense with an up-tempo approach.

When speaking with the media, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron states the offense needs to kick it up a notch.

“I think it’s more we’re trying to love over, get the perfect play for the perfect defense,” Orgeron said when discussing the issues on offense. “We had a discussion and we’re better off sometimes going to what we call ‘warp’. Go fast and attack the defense and we’re going to practice that this week.”

Going up-tempo or ‘warp’ could be a way for the offense to disguise some of its weaknesses. More specifically the weaknesses with the offensive line. They have allowed five sacks and countless pressures in protection. Going faster will help the team in that regard.

[listicle id=24465]

Going faster with no substitutions won’t allow the defense to catch their breath and that is where mistakes can happen. It interesting idea just a couple of weeks into the season. The real question is do they have enough time ahead of Mississippi State to get it installed to their liking?

Just one more aspect to follow in this week’s game with Central Michigan.

LSU vs Central Michigan: Areas of concern for the Tigers

There are six areas of concern for the LSU Tigers going into Saturday’s game, five of which are on the offensive side of the ball.

Despite the doom and gloom that seems to cloud the LSU Tigers at the moment, the team has an opportunity to be 2-1 ahead of SEC play. Not the record many were expecting, present company included, but 2-1 looks a lot better than staring 1-4 in the face with Mississippi State and Auburn looming in the next two weeks.

This marks the first time that the LSU Tigers will face the Central Michigan Chippewas. Earlier this year we saw the first-ever game between LSU and UCLA, let’s hope for a better outcome this time around. Currently, the Tigers are a three-score favorite in this game.

The fans in Death Valley will welcome an old face to Tiger Stadium, former Florida Gators head coach Jim McElwain brings CMU down to the Bayou. For the Tigers to come away victorious, we circled six areas of emphasis for LSU.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

LSU (1-1) vs Central Michigan (1-1) Game Preview

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Chippewas have the experience, the coaching, and the upside to win the MAC and be a dangerous out for an LSU that’s still trying to figure it out.

There wasn’t any issue against McNeese with a 34-7 LSU win, but the running game still isn’t rolling – averaging 3.4 yards per carry last week – and it took a wee bit too long to put that away.

Central Michigan has the tough veterans to hold up against the pounding LSU will try to do, and it has the offense to keep things moving. Former Washington QB Jacob Sirmon has been terrific so far – getting more of a warm-up against Robert Morris last week – leading an offense that’s going to keep pressing.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why LSU Will Win

The Tiger pass rush is going to bother Sirmon.

The Central Michigan offensive front is going to be okay, but LSU is doing a great job of generating pressure. It wasn’t just against McNeese, the D was able to get behind the line against UCLA, too – even though there were problems overall holding up.

This isn’t the powerhouse LSU team it should be considering the talent level in place, but the secondary is still full of NFL starters, Max Johnson is growing into the starting quarterback role, and the lines are too good.

Basically, if LSU plays up to its ability, there isn’t a problem. However …

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Central Michigan is going to provide a push.

Again, this is a good team with enough across the board – and an SEC head coach in Jim McElwain – that isn’t going to beat itself and will be efficient and effective enough to make LSU press.

The Tigers will get this done with a few big home runs, but can the running game get going? Missouri was able to come up with over 200 yards and close to six yards per carry against the Chippewas, and LSU is going to give it a try.

LSU vs Central Michigan: Three facts about the game

Three facts about Saturday’s game between LSU and Central Michigan.

The LSU Tigers are just days away from their third game of the 2021 season. Following the perfect 2019 campaign, the Tigers find themselves playing .500 football ever since. With a 6-6 record in that time, they have a chance to get above that mark for the first time since they won the natty.

Last season LSU started 3-5 and needed back-to-back wins just to get to that .500 mark. Wipe the slate clean, the Tigers need to focus on getting a win this week against the Chippewas before heading to Starkville, Mississippi next Saturday. LSU looks to get revenge over last year’s demoralizing season opener against Mike Leach and the Bulldogs. Before we get to that game, the team from Death Valley needs to take care of Central Michigan.

In recent years this game would be viewed as a tune-up game for the Tigers. Get the offense and defense rolling early on and allow the younger players to get in on mop-up duty in a majority of the second half. However, there seems to be a bit of anxiety heading into this year’s game with CMU.

More on the game soon, but first let’s start with three facts about this game.

LSU Tigers open as three score favorites over Central Michigan

The LSU Tigers football team are heaving favorites as betting lines open for this week’s game.

Coming off the win against McNeese on Saturday, the LSU Tigers are set to host their second home game of the young season. Despite the win over the Cowboys, LSU failed to cover the spread for the second-straight game. Can they do it this week against Central Michigan?

The Chippewas are led by a coach familiar with LSU and the SEC. Jim McElwain, the former Florida head coach is in his third season with the team. He returns to Death Valley for the first time since 2016, McElwain’s second season in the Swamp. LSU lost that game 16-10. The Tigers won the previous season against him 35-28.

[listicle id=24056]

For the second time this season, LSU will be facing a team they have never played. UCLA was able to get the better of the Tigers, but can they do better against Central Michigan? This is the second Chippewas game in the SEC this season. They played Missouri in week one, falling to the Tigers 34-24. This past Saturday CMU knocked off Robert Morris 45-0.
