BREAKING: Malik Nabers sets LSU’s program receiving record in ReliaQuest Bowl

Malik Nabers broke LSU’s program receiving yards record on Monday.

[autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] made history on Saturday morning, setting LSU’s program receiving yards record.

Nabers began the game with a nine-yard catch, one of two catches on the opening drive.

Nabers broke the record on LSU’s third drive when [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] found him for 11 yards on first and 10.

[autotag]Josh Reed[/autotag] held the record for over 20 years. Despite all the talent that’s come through Baton Rouge at receiver, it remained untouched until Nabers joined Reed as the only other LSU receiver to cross the 3,000 career receiving yards record.

Projected to be an early first-round pick, Nabers chose to play in the bowl game, citing his desire to set the record as a key motivator. Nabers continues to build on his program receptions record, which he set in the regular season finale against Texas A&M.

This fall, Nabers led the country in receiving yards while sitting second nationally in touchdowns.

Nabers has yet to officially declare for the NFL draft, but it’s expected he’ll be off to the pros.

Where Jayden Daniels ranks on LSU’s all-time QB leader boards

Here’s where Jayden Daniels sits on LSU’s all-time passing lists with three regular season games to go.

From [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] to [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], LSU has witnessed some good QB play over the last six years.

In the midst of a stellar 2023, Daniels is on his way to joining Burrow near the top of LSU’s record books. With a few games to go, Daniels still has room to climb, but he is already top three in several key categories.

Daniels’ ability to account for yardage through the air and on the ground has made him one of the sport’s most productive players over the last two years.

Here’s where Daniels sits among LSU quarterbacks as he prepares for Florida this weekend.

Can Malik Nabers set LSU’s all-time receiving record?

Malik Nabers could set LSU’s all-time receiving record if he keeps this pace up.

[autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag]’ 981 receiving yards lead the country after eight weeks.

The star receiver entered the year with plenty of hype, but is finding ways to exceed it, boosting his draft stock in the process.

Nabers is climbing LSU’s program leaderboards and at this rate, he’s given himself a chance to set LSU’s career receiving yards record.

He’s currently seventh in program history, tied with [autotag]Justin Jefferson[/autotag] at 2,415 yards. Nabers will likely jump Jefferson on Saturday night and needs 102 yards to catch [autotag]Brandon LaFell[/autotag] in fifth place.

[autotag]Josh Reed[/autotag] is all the way up at No. 1, with 3,001 career yards. Nobody’s really come close to Reed since that record was set, but Nabers will.

There are a few ways to look at this here. Nabers has four regular season games left to play. After that, we don’t know what LSU’s season will look like yet.

LSU could beat Alabama and make the SEC title game, giving the Tigers an extra game and an outside shot at the playoff. But it could go the other way too, which could lead to some of LSU’s NFL talent opting out of the bowl game.

That means there’s a scenario where Nabers only plays four more games. He’d have to average 146.5 yards per game to hit 3,001 by the end of the regular season. That’s well above the 122.6 he’s averaging already this year.

But if LSU does beat Bama and get that SEC title game, Nabers only needs 117.2 per game. That also applies if LSU loses to Alabama but Nabers still elects to play in the bowl game.

If Nabers ends up playing six more games, he’ll need just 97.8 yards per game. That’s manageable given this offensive output.

The program career receptions record is in play too. Nabers needs 27 catches to tie [autotag]Wendell Davis[/autotag] at 183.

Which program records could LSU WR Malik Nabers set?

What program records could star LSU receiver Malik Nabers set this fall?

Big things are once again expected of LSU’s pass-catching group. While it doesn’t have the same level of returning experience that last year’s did, the talent remains on par with the 2022 group.

Despite the plethora of options, LSU’s passing game will be the [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] show.

Nabers was [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag]’ favorite target last year and with another offseason under their belts, the chemistry should only be improved.

If Nabers stays healthy, he’s going to put up big numbers. He already led the SEC in catches as a sophomore and finished 2022 with a career-high of 163 yards in the bowl game.

If Nabers lives up to expectations, he’ll find himself moving up LSU’s all-time leaderboards.

Where Dylan Crews finished in the LSU record books

Here’s where Dylan Crews stands after an all-time career in Baton Rouge.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] played his last game as an LSU Tiger on Monday night.

The outfielder stepped on campus with sky-high expectations three years ago and somehow managed to exceed them.

Crews was one of the SEC’s best hitters for three straight years, but 2023, was his best. It culminated with the Golden Spikes Award on Sunday and a national championship on Monday.

Now Crews awaits to see where he’s picked in the MLB draft, where he has a chance to be the first player selected.

He’s one of the best players to ever put on an LSU baseball uniform. Here’s where Crews finished in the LSU record books.

Paul Skenes now ranks 6th all-time at LSU in single-season strikeouts

With just eight more strikeouts, Skenes will hold sole possession of second place.

You can find examples of transfers making a major impact across college baseball, but perhaps no single player has made a bigger difference with his new team than [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] at LSU.

The former Air Force pitcher made a bet on himself last offseason, and it has paid off tremendously. He’s become the best pitcher in college baseball and could be a top-two pick in the MLB draft this summer.

Even as LSU has had struggles behind him on the mound, Skenes has been practically unbeatable as the ace. He boasts a 10-1 record with just a 1.69 earned run average. He’s walked just 14 batters compared to the 152 he’s struck out.

The latter mark places Skenes at No. 6 all-time in the LSU single-season record book.

With only 79.2 innings pitched this season, Skenes has been far and away the most efficient player on this list. He’s the only one in the top 11 to pitch fewer than 100 innings.

Things are very tight within the top five as Skenes is just four strikeouts away from cracking it. With eight more strikeouts, he would take sole possession of No. 2 all-time.

Catching [autotag]Ben McDonald[/autotag], who sits way ahead of the rest of the pack with an unthinkable 202 strikeouts in 1989, may not be in the cards. Barring injury, however, Skenes should have little problem securing the No. 2 spot as LSU looks to make a run to the College World Series.

Where could Jayden Daniels end up on LSU’s all-time passing leaderboards?

Where could Jayden Daniels stand in the LSU record books by the end of the 2023 season?

[autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] had a strong Year 1 with LSU.

Having started three years at Arizona State, the quarterback had plenty of P5 experience. But at LSU, he entered a situation with a first-year head coach in a tougher conference.

It was the best year of his collegiate career. Daniels elected to pass up the NFL draft, return to LSU and build on it.

In this new era of offense, stats can accumulate fast. That puts him in a position to climb up some of LSU’s all-time quarterback leaderboards.

Here’s what Daniels needs to do this fall to approach some of the top spots.

Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis says he felt ‘cheated out of something’ after falling short of Pete Maravich’s record

Davis was frustrated that the 14-19 Titans didn’t receive a CBI bid, ending their season.

When the Detroit Mercy Titans didn’t receive a bid for the CBI postseason tournament, ending its campaign, that also meant the end of star Antoine Davis’ hopes of surpassing Pete Maravich’s all-time career scoring record as he came up just four points shy in a Horizon League tournament loss to Youngstown State.

At 14-19, it would have been fairly surprising to see the Titans get a bid, though they themselves were pushing for one. Based on Davis’ comments, he seems to have taken the snub personally.

“I’m upset about it,” Davis said per The Associated Press. “I feel like I got cheated out of something that they can’t ever give back to me. I think it’s selfish — and weird — that people emailed or called the CBI to say we shouldn’t be in the tournament because they didn’t want me to break the record.

“But there’s nothing to hold my head down about. I still feel like I’m the best scorer in my generation, especially finishing No. 2 behind him.”

Rick Giles, the president of the Gazelle Group which runs the CBI, did confirm that they received emails and voicemails asking to exclude UDM to protect Maravich’s record, though he emphasized that played no role in the decision.

The CBI is a pay-to-play tournament, and Maravich’s son Jason told the AP that he thought it would be a “terrible look” to allow Davis to break the record in a lower-tier postseason tournament on a 14-19 team.

Maravich’s all-time record is safe, and given that Davis needed five full seasons granted by COVID-19 eligibility relief to even get close, it probably will be for quite a while.

LSU gymnastics leads SEC in attendance

Baton Rouge showed up in full force to support the Tigers this year.

Baton Rouge loves gymnastics.

With the regular season in the rearview mirror, LSU announced it set a new program record for attendance on its way to leading the SEC.

LSU averaged 12,075 fans per contest. Over 60,000 fans traveled to the PMac throughout the year. The largest crowd came on Jan. 16 when 12,065 fans showed up to watch LSU face Oklahoma.

According to the release, LSU sold over 7,400 season tickets.

LSU faced adversity this year, getting bit by the injury bug, but it finished the year having not lost in six matches.

The Tigers are now preparing for the SEC championship meet in Duluth, GA. LSU will compete in the night session on Saturday after earning a top-four seed. The Tigers will be joined by Alabama, Kentucky and Florida.

LSU will look to unseat the Gators, who are the defending champions.

This was head coach Jay Clark’s third year at the helm after long-time coach D.D Breaux retired.

Pete Maravich’s all-time Division I scoring record is officially safe as Detroit Mercy was spurned by CBI

Maravich will hold onto his crown despite a close call this season.

Antoine Davis’ hopes of toppling “Pistol” Pete Maravich’s all-time scoring record, which has stood for more than 50 years since Maravich left LSU in 1970, have officially ended.

The Detroit Mercy standout finishes his college career just four points shy of surpassing Maravich’s record after the Titans didn’t receive an invite to the CBI, officially ending their season.

Davis entered DMU’s Horizon League quarterfinal matchup against Youngstown State needing 26 points to pass Maravich on the all-time scoring list, and he finished with 22 in a loss for the Titans.

Even if Davis had broken Maravich’s record, it’s hard to draw a one-to-one comparison between the two. Davis played five seasons compared to Maravich’s three (freshmen weren’t permitted to play on the varsity team at the time) and the latter played prior to the advent of the three-point line or shot clock.

No one will ever match Maravich’s career, in which he averaged 44.3 points per game — an unbreakable Division I record — and he’ll also be holding onto his all-time scoring record for the foreseeable future.
