Louisiana Tech vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The passing game is a whole lot of fun.

It has to bomb away to keep up, and it didn’t do much against UTEP a few weeks ago, but it got to well over 300 yards in two of the last three games and three of the last five.

Old Dominion is good at keeping scores low – for the most part – and staying in range, but it doesn’t have a consistent downfield passing game and turns the ball over way too often. It hasn’t been great against the decent passing games, giving up close to 400 yards two weeks ago to the WKU air show and close to 300 yards to Marshall – Louisiana Tech will get to 300 yards, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Old Dominion Will Win

Louisiana Tech doesn’t have enough of a pass rush to bother the Old Dominion backfield with just two sacks in the last three games and ten on the year.

Old Dominion has enough of a running game to potentially slow things down, and if the passing game can be a balance and not force anything, it should dominate the time of possession battle.

It has GOT to stop with the giveaways. The Monarchs have turned it over two or more times in each of the last four games and ten times during the stretch, but …

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Louisiana Tech has turned it over eight times in the last three and is hit-or-miss on takeaways.

If the Bulldogs can force the four turnovers – or close to it – like they did against UTEP, they win. The can win with three takeaways. Anything less than that, and Old Dominion gets the first win over an FBS team in the Ricky Rahne era.

UTSA vs Lousiana Tech Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

What are the future American Athletic Conference UTSA Roadrunners doing that’s so right?

The lines have been terrific.

The ground game isn’t anything amazing, but the offensive front is great in pass protection and it’s effective enough for the good group of backs. The defensive front has been a rock against the run – Illinois got to 150 yards on the ground, and no one else has done more.

The Louisiana Tech lines are going to be in for a long day, and the secondary isn’t going to come up with enough stops, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The Bulldogs are great at staying in games on takeaways.

Sort of.

They lost to UTEP, but they came up with four turnovers. The four takeaways made the Mississippi State game close, and the three against SE Louisiana saved the day.

Giveaways have been an issue – especially picks from QB Austin Kendall – but the yards have been there.

Keep bombing, test the UTSA secondary that allowed 523 passing yards to WKU’s machine and over 300 to both Memphis and UNLV, and hope for a few key takeaways – that’s the formula, but …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UTSA doesn’t have a turnover problem. It only lost the turnover battle once this year, and even then it was just a -1 in a win over Middle Tennessee.

Louisiana Tech is in desperate need of a good break, but the 19-3 clunker against UTEP might have been one too many body blows. UTSA isn’t going to screw up enough to let the perfect season die in Ruston.

Louisiana Tech vs UTEP Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

UTEP might be 5-1, but it hasn’t beaten anyone who’s all that great.

Who cares? It’s UTEP – 5-1 is 5-1 no matter who you are. However, Louisiana Tech is the second-best team on the slate just behind Boise State, and there’s a massive drop to everyone else.

Louisiana Tech’s passing game should work.

The Miners have done a great job on defense against everyone but Boise State, and they allowed 340 yards to Hank Bachmeier and company.

Louisiana Tech QB Austin Kendall should be able to hit 300 yards without breathing hard.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UTEP Will Win

UTEP might not have beaten anyone great, but it’s doing exactly what a good team is supposed to do against a schedule like this.

It’s not like the mediocre squads are going off on the Miner D. The run defense has been fantastic – it has yet to allow 125 rushing yards – and the team hasn’t given up 300 yards of total offense in any of the last three games.

Can UTEP get the passing attack going? The Louisiana Tech pass defense isn’t anything special – to be fair, it’s faced a slew of high-octane passing teams – but the Miners are going to try grinding it out first.

A good rotation of backs are producing for an O that got to 200 yards on the ground in three of the six games.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UTEP is a fantastic story.

It’s having a special season, but it’s going have to fight to get that sixth win to become bowl eligible – and it’s not going to happen here.

Louisiana Tech has a way of playing up or down to its competition, and it’ll do it again. It has yet to be in any game that hasn’t been decided by a touchdown or less. That’s going to change – passing game will open it up late – but UTEP won’t be a pushover.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs College Football Preview 2021: Offense

It was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Louisiana Tech offense, and it was that and more in a rough, rough run. The Bulldogs averaged 316 yards per game – they were 117th in the nation in total offense – but still found a way to put together around 27 points per game.

The ground game wasn’t there and the downfield passing attack was non-existent, but enough talent is back to hope for an instant improvement.

– The quarterback combination of Luke Anthony and Aaron Allen is still around. They both hit over 60% of their throws, but they struggled with picks and didn’t add anything to the ground game. They’re both around 6-1 and 210ish, and they both have the experience in the system to do more.

The receiving corps should be okay. 5-6 Smoke Harris led the team with 39 catches, but he only averaged 7.8 yards per catch. Leading yardage guy Adrian Hardy is gone, and Wayne Toussant and Cee Jay Mowell are transferring out. Griffin Herbert is a 6-3 veteran who can stretch the field, and Isaiah Graham can hit the home run.

The offensive line gets four starters back, but there’s a ton of transfer in the transfer portal – it loses all-star C Kody Russey to Houston – and has to be a whole lot stronger after struggling for a ground game that averaged under 100 yards per game.

Junior Abraham Delfin might be an undersized 6-1 and 303 pounds, but he’s an all-star to work around, and getting in Samuel Williams from ULM should help.

Leading rushers Israel Tucker and Justin Henderson are gone, but 6-0, 205-pound former JUCO transfer Greg Garner was third with 115 yards and three touchdowns and Marcus Williams is on his way from Appalachian State. More on him in a bit.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Football Schedule Analysis: Assume a win over SE Louisiana, but can the Bulldogs win one of the other three non-conference games against Mississippi State, NC State and SMU?

With seven teams in the West, Louisiana Tech only plays one game against the East – getting Charlotte isn’t all that bad.

The West games against UAB and Rice are on the road as a part of a run of three road trips in the final five weeks. However, Three of the first four games of the season are at home.

Georgia Southern 38, Louisiana Tech 3: R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl 10 Things To Know

The 10 ten things you need to know about the Georgia Southern win over Louisiana Tech in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

Georgia Southern 38, Louisiana Tech 3. The 10 ten things you need to know about the Georgia Southern win over Louisiana Tech in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

[jwplayer Hn8O2tae]

Georgia Southern 38, Louisiana Tech 3: R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

10. The Louisiana Tech offense could never get going. The Georgia Southern offense had something to do with that, a whole slew of mistakes had something to do with that, and this was over fast. Georgia Southern got up 7-0 just over five minutes in, and that was it.

9. Skip Holtz finally lost a bowl game at Louisiana Tech. It’s a far cry from shutting out Miami 14-0 in last year’s Independence, but he got the program to its seventh bowl game in a row after winning the first six. This was a rebuilding year, and all things considered, 5-5 and this bowl trip wasn’t bad.

8. Georgia Southern was totally dominant from the start. Louisiana Tech couldn’t stop the option, it got behind too fast after too many mistakes, and it didn’t have the passing game to keep up. All year long it’s been a struggle for the Bulldogs, they needed to get out to a hot start, and they did anything but.

7. Starting quarterback Luke Anthony couldn’t go for the Bulldogs, Aaron Allen stepped in and gave it a try against one of the nation’s best teams at taking the ball away, and it was a disaster from there. Four interceptions – three on Allen – no takeaways – and no downfield passing game – nothing worked.

6. Don’t put this on Louisiana Tech not showing up. It had issues all year long with its consistency, it was coming off a 52-10 blasting against TCU, and it just couldn’t get anything going. The momentum carries Georgia Southern, but it all started because …

5. Shai Werts was able to go. The Georgia Southern quarterback was questionable at best with a shoulder injury. It seemed like the Eagles would be down to a third-string option, but Werts played, there didn’t appear to be a problem looking and playing like normal, and the offense rolled.

4. The Eagle offense did exactly what it was supposed to. It ran for 322 yards with its option attack, Werts hit on his deep throws when they were available, and it had the ball for way over 34 minutes. Louisiana Tech was never able to get into any sort of a groove because …

3. Those turnovers were devastating. It looked like Louisiana Tech was going to be able to move the ball a little bit early on. It came up with a few nice plays, it seemed like it would take just a little bit to warm up, and then … interception. Interception. And then another – including a key one in the red zone. Georgia Southern only scored seven points on the first three picks, but they were enough to stall the Bulldogs.

2. The Georgia Southern defense generated pressure throughout the game. It came up with three sacks, and more than that, it was able to get to knock around Austin Allen enough to limit him to 41 passing yards on a 10-of-24 passes with no touchdowns and three picks. Israel Tucker was able to run for 123 yards, but it wasn’t nearly enough to carry the offense.

1. Shai Werts closed out his career as one of the most ultra-productive option quarterbacks ever. During his time, he ran for 3,072 yards, 34 touchdowns, and unlike a slew of triple-option quarterbacks over the decades, he threw well, pitching 34 touchdown passes in his four seasons with just 12 interceptions.

So he wasn’t supposed to be healthy? 7-of-12, 126 yards, one touchdown,  and 71 rushing yards with three touchdowns, and with this, he won two bowl games in three tries.

Former Saints draft pick Boston Scott sustaining success with the Eagles

The New Orleans Saints gave up on their former 2018 NFL draft pick Boston Scott, a Louisiana Tech product who has caught on with the Eagles.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”lUjGzmYUal-1020366-7498″]

The New Orleans Saints deserve serious credit for the turnaround they’ve created in drafting college talent after hiring former Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland to overhaul their scouting department, but New Orleans’ 2018 draft class is proof the Saints still aren’t infallible.

Just three of their seven draft picks are still on the team: defensive end Marcus Davenport, wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith, and backup offensive lineman Will Clapp, who has been bouncing on and off of the practice squad.

To be fair, each of the players they drafted and cut months later are still kicking around the league. Fourth-round tackle Rick Leonard is on the Cardinals practice squad, safety Natrell Jamerson was recently called up to play for the Panthers, and cornerback Kamrin Moore is hanging on with the Giants. But the biggest missed opportunity of the group remains running back Boston Scott.

Scott, a sixth-round pick out of nearby Louisiana Tech, performed well in training camp and preseason but the Saints coaches decided to cut him in favor of backups Jonathan Williams and Mike Gillislee. With Mark Ingram sidelined by a four-game PED suspensions to start the year, they reasoned that the bigger backs could fill in better next to Alvin Kamara than the 5-foot-6, 203-pound Scott.

They were wrong. The Philadelphia Eagles signed Scott off their practice squad in December 2018, and the Saints chose to not keep him around by promoting him to the active roster. 22 months later and Scott is starting games for the Eagles while Gillislee is out of the league and Williams is buried on the Lions depth chart.

Scott has proven to be a clutch player in Philly, running a dozen times for 46 rushing yards while catching 3 of his 5 targets for another 46 receiving yards and a touchdown scored in the Eagles’ narrow 22-21 win over the Giants last week. He’s already halfway there to matching his 2019 scrimmage yards total (449) with 207 total yards of offense in seven games. Scott is also fielding kicks this year with 167 return yards.

The Saints probably would have enjoyed having someone with those talents when Kamara missed time last year with injuries, and when he returned to battle through those same issues.

It isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things. It’s barely even a blemish, to be honest; the Saints remain very deep at running back between Kamara and 2019 free agent pickup Latavius Murray, and their special teams unit is, well, strong, to say the least (Deonte Harris won All-Pro recognition in the role last year).

But it’s still disappointing to see a player the Saints passed on finding so much success somewhere else. Especially when neither of the players they bet on instead are also not a factor on this year’s team.

So keep situations like these in mind when the Saints are on the clock in the closing rounds of next year’s draft; sure, they could find the next Marques Colston or Zach Strief with their final pick. They could also help someone else find the next Boston Scott.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Offense 3 Things To Know

– When all of the parts were there – blowing off the late season issue when a few of the parts were suspended for a bit – the offense was terrific. It led Conference USA in third down conversions, was second in the league in total and scoring O, and the attack scoring 41 points or more in six of the last nine regular season games. The two late in the year when it didn’t hit the mark? Those two games with the suspensions.

The one big question mark will be the offensive line. It wasn’t great in pass protection and was fine for the ground game, but now it has to replace three starters. Coming in, though, is former four-star talent Donavaughn Campbell from LSU to push for one of the guard gigs. Size across the board won’t be a problem for a running game that gets back the main guys.

218-pound Justin Henderson ran for close to 1,100 yards with 14 touchdowns, and quick senior Israel Tucker are both back to ease in the new quarterback situation.

Who’s replacing J’Mar Smith? Former JUCO transfer Westin Elliott is a big option who’ll make a push, but he threw four picks and no touchdown passes in his limited time last year. Sophomore Aaron Allen returns after serving as a decent backup – he’ll be the odds-on favorite to take over.

Leading receiver Malik Stanley is gone, but the next five producing wide receivers return. 6-3 sophomore Griffin Hebert and former TCU transfer senior Isaiah Graham stretch the field, but there are plenty of other veterans to spread the ball around.
