The Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list for 2022 is released

The first watch list of the college football season is out with the Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list.

As the temperatures begin rising and the summer months come our way, the reminders that another college football season is on the way continue to roll out. While it will still be some time before we hit our stride with watch list season later this summer, the Lott IMPACT Trophy got the ball rolling this week with the release of its watch list for the upcoming college football season.

A total of 42 players appear on the watch list for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, which is awarded to one of the nation’s top defensive players in the country with a special focus on an individual’s character and impact on the field. Penn State cornerback [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag] is the lone Nittany Lion appearing on the watch list for the award going into the 2022 season.

Last year’s winner of the Lott IMPACT Trophy was Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. It was the second season in a row that a Big Ten player won the award, following Northwestern linebacker Paddy Fisher in 2020.

Penn State has one Lott IMPACT Trophy award winner in program history. [autotag]Carl Nassib[/autotag] received the award in 2015.

Jack Campbell and Riley Moss Named To Lott IMPACT Trophy Watchlist

Iowa Hawkeyes defensive standouts Jack Campbell and Riley Moss were named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy watchlist.

Senior linebacker Jack Campbell and cornerback Riley Moss were two of 42 players named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy watchlist.

The Lott IMPACT Trophy, established by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, is a prestigious award presented to the defensive IMPACT player of the year.

The foundation aims to find not only the best player on the field, but off the field as well. The acronym IMPACT stands for integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity, which are all attributes of the award’s namesake Ronnie Lott.

The award is presented annually to individuals who demonstrate excellence in the field of athletics and recognizes college football’s Defensive Player of the Year who best exemplifies the IMPACT acronym. Past recipients include Michigan’s Aidan Hutchinson last year and current San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Demeco Ryans.

Jack Campbell was the nation’s leader in tackles last year with 143 and received first-team All-Big Ten honors. He was named Iowa’s Roy J. Carver Most Valuable Player defensively last year for the Hawkeyes and was one of five team captains.

Riley Moss was one of the top cornerbacks in the nation last year, winning the Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year. Sporting News also named Moss as one of its first-team All-America selections last season. Moss finished 2021 with four interceptions and five more pass breakups.

The last Hawkeye to win the award was Josey Jewell back in 2017, though multiple Iowa players have been nominated since including quarterfinalist Zach VanValkenburg last year and semifinalist Chauncey Golston the year prior.

Michigan State football safety Xavier Henderson named to Lott Trophy watchlist

Michigan State football safety Xavier Henderson decided to return for one more season, and he is already being considered for some of the more prestigious awards in college football.

On Friday, it was announced that Henderson has made the watchlist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy. The award is given annually to the defensive player who shows the greatest excellence both on and off the field, taking into account the character of the individual as well as their on-field prowess.

Established by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, The Lott IMPACT Trophy honors college football’s best in character and performance. The award is unique because it represents the first college football award to give equal weight to personal character as well as athletic performance from a defensive college player and is the first national college football award based on the West Coast.

The IMPACT award is awarded annually to individuals who demonstrate excellence in the field of athletics and recognizes college football’s Defensive Player of the Year who best exemplifies the IMPACT acronym: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.

Wisconsin LB Jack Sanborn named PFF Preseason All-American

Wisconsin linebacker Jack Sanborn named as a PFF Preseason All-American

Over the last few seasons, Wisconsin linebacker Jack Sanborn has become the Badgers’ defense anchor. Even though his statistics were limited in 2020 due to a shortened season, the senior linebacker was named as an honorable mention to the PFF All-America Team.

The other inside linebackers nominated alongside Sanborn include Iowa State’s Mike Rose as an honorable mention, Baylors’ Jalen Pitre and Indiana’s Micah McFadden in the third team, Nebraska’s JoJo Domann and Troy’s Carlton Martial in the second team as well as LSU‘s Mike Jones Jr. and Washington’s Edefuan Ulofoshio in the first team.

Earlier this month, Jack Sanborn was also named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List, and it would not be surprising if the Wisconsin defensive star earned more nominations and awards before the start of the season.

Zach Harrison makes 2021 Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list

Ohio State defensive end Zach Harrison is one of 42 players named to the 2021 Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list.

OK. The first college football watch list of 2021 is out and there’s an Ohio State player involved.

The 2021 Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list was announced on Tuesday, and defensive end Zach Harrison was one of 42 players appearing among the notable names.

According to the Lott IMPACT Trophy’s website, “College defensive players are nominated to the Watch List based on the IMPACT on their teams on and off the field. IMPACT is an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. The 42 represents Ronnie Lott’s number during his legendary career.”

Most of you probably know him, but Ronnie Lott was an All-American for USC before spending the majority of his 14 years in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers. He has four Super Bowl titles to his credit and is an NFL Hall of Famer.

Harrison is looking for a breakout year in 2021. He came to Ohio State out of the 2018 recruiting class and was expected to do big things as a consensus five-star prospect. The tools are there, and we’ve seen flashes, but there’s no denying that he has yet to fulfill his promise. This could be the year.

Off the field, Harrison has been a key figure in shaping racial equality. He is a member of the Anti-hate and Anti-racism Coalition in the Big Ten. Those activities are just as important to winning the award as what happens on the gridiron.

Linebacker James Laurinaitis is the only OSU player to take home the award. He did it in 2008. Paddy Fisher of Northwestern was honored last season.

Wisconsin LB Jack Sanborn named to Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List

On Thursday afternoon, Wisconsin football announced that senior inside linebacker Jack Sanborn was named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List per the Badgers’ social media.

The Lott IMPACT Trophy goes to the college football player every season that best represents the IMPACT acronym of integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity. In fact, former Wisconsin defensive lineman J.J. Watt won the prestigious award with the Badgers in 2010.

It is no surprise to see Sanborn named to an early watch list, as the Deer Park, Illinois, native has been the anchor of the Badgers’ defense the last two seasons.

Zakoby McClain named to Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List

Auburn linebacker Zakoby McClain has been named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List, an award won by Derrick Brown in 2019.

Zakoby McClain is out for vengeance.

After the Auburn linebacker was denied postseason honors despite leading the nation with 113 tackles last season, he’s back to prove himself (and his doubters) wrong.

He’s already earning some recognition as he has been named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List. Per the award website, “The IMPACT award is awarded annually to individuals who demonstrate excellence in the field of athletics and recognizes college football’s Defensive Player of the Year who best exemplifies the IMPACT acronym: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.”

Auburn is no stranger to the award as Derrick Brown was the ultimate winner just two seasons ago.

Along with the 113 tackles (57 solo), McClain recorded 5.5 tackles for a loss, 3.0 sacks, 2.0 quarterback hurries, 1.0 forced fumble and 1.0 passes broken up last season as a sophomore.

Badger linebacker on the watch list for the 2020 Lott Impact Trophy

The watch list for the 2020 Lott Impact Trophy has been released and Wisconsin junior linebacker Jack Sanborn is a member of the list…

The watch list for the 2020 Lott Impact Trophy has been released and Wisconsin junior linebacker Jack Sanborn is a member of the list.

The trophy–one first awarded to Georgia linebacker David Pollack in 2004–is given to the defensive IMPACT player of the year, with IMPACT being an acronym for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.

Were Sanborn to receive the honor he would become the first Badger to do so, and the second ever, after J.J. Watt was the recipient in 2010.

Other notable names on the list of winners include Alabama and long-time Philadelphia Eagle linebacker DeMeco Ryans, Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly, UCLA linebackers Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks, Michigan linebacker/safety Jabrill Peppers and most recently Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown.

Sanborn enters his junior season after leading the team with 80 tackles last year but without fellow defensive stars in Chris Orr and Zack Baun alongside him. If his production from his first year as a starter is any indication, the Deer Park, Illinois native could be in for an impressive campaign as the quarterback and leader of Jim Leonhard’s defense.

Ohio State CB Shaun Wade listed on LOTT Impact Trophy 2020 preseason Watchlist

Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade is one of 42 players appearing on the 2020 preseason LOTT Impact Trophy watchlist.

Get ready. It’s always a sign of college football getting closer in the rearview mirror when the parade of watchlists come out for the slew of awards we see in the sport. And wouldn’t you know it, the LOTT Impact Trophy, given to “college football’s defensive best in character and performance” annually has released its 42-man preseason watchlist for the upcoming 2020 season. It is awarded to the player that best demonstrates “integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and Tenacity.”

And as you would expect, Ohio State has a representative on the list with the inclusion of cornerback Shaun Wade. The Buckeyes have had just one winner since its inception in 2004 when linebacker James Laurinaitis took the award home at the end of the 2008 season.

Wade will be a fourth-year junior who flirted with heading to the NFL early last season, but then made a decision to come back for one more year. He should be the cornerstone of an Ohio State secondary that lost three players to the 2020 NFL Draft — two of them first-rounders in Damon Arnette and Jeff Okudah.

We’ll keep an eye on all the watchlists as they are announced, and as more news is made available on the plans to have college football this fall so they can all be handed out.

Owusu-Koramoah Named to Lott Impact Trophy Watch List

Another pre-season accolade for Notre Dame star Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.

There continues to be considerable hype for one of Notre Dame’s breakout defenders from last year, linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. We have been keeping track of some of  said hype here, and here as well.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvWsIbQAkYY&w=560&h=315]

Adding more hype to Owusu-Koramoah for the 2020 season as he was named on the Lott Impact Trophy watch list. Of the 42 total athletes on the list, there are 16 linebackers, 15 defensive backs and 11 defensive linemen. The last time a Notre Dame defender won the Lott Trophy was in 2012 when linebacker Manti Te’o brought to award back to South Bend.

The Lott Trophy mentions Owusu-Koramoah’s versatility as he “can play multiple positions on defense,” in their short write up of the Irish star. Seeing his name on this list shouldn’t be surprising at all and his company is extremely impressive. Owusu-Koramoah should see his name on other watch-lists heading into the season, as the excitement for the senior to have a massive year is building.
