Prediction

Clippers 118, Rockets 109

Moneyline (ML)

The Clippers (-208) will cost you more than two times your rate of return betting on the favorite. They’re not worth it, as you simply need to lay a few buckets over the Rockets (+170) on the spread.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Clippers to win outright returns a profit of $4.80.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The CLIPPERS (-5.5, -106) have connected against the spread in four straight outings at home, while going 5-1 ATS in the past six overall. They’re also 6-1 ATS in the past seven as a favorite. Meanwhile, the Rockets (+5.5, -115) have hit in just one of the past six games overall.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 232.5 (-106) is the play, as it has connected in 10 of the past 12 for Houston as an underdog and five of its past seven overall. The Under is also 20-8 in the past 28 road games for the Rockets. The Under is 9-4 in LA’s past 13 as a home favorite while hitting in four in a row against opponents with a winning percentage over .600.

Four potential Jrue Holiday trade destinations

HoopsHype breaks down the latest Jrue Holiday trade rumors and examines potential destinations for the one-time All-Star.

The New Orleans Pelicans came into the season with high expectations after drafting Zion Williamson first overall last summer, and following that up with a series of savvy, team-friendly signings.

Things haven’t gone according to plan for New Orleans, however, as Williamson got injured just before the start of the regular season and Derrick Favors, one of those aforementioned savvy signings, had injuries and personal issues that have caused him to miss a lot of the campaign. As such, an already lacking frontcourt became rail thin, and the Pelicans haven’t been able to recover.

Now, according to the New Yorl Times’ Marc Stein, New Orleans appears ready to start making moves. Stein reported on Tuesday that although Williamson, Brandon Ingram and JJ Redick are untouchable (Redick less so than the two super prospects), Jrue Holiday, who the Pelicans previously refused to even hear offers for in previous seasons, can now be had for the right price.

This is major news, as Holiday is the type of plug-and-play star who could fit on any playoff contender and immediately make them better.

Below, we break down four potential trade destinations for the 29-year-old floor general.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

MIAMI HEAT

The Miami Heat have surprised the basketball collective this season after jumping out to a 19-8 record through 27 games, including noteworthy wins over the Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors and Dallas Mavericks.

Nevertheless, for Miami to reach legit contender status, they’re going to need to find Jimmy Butler some help, as the four-time All-Star’s workload has been getting a little too heavy in recent weeks.

One such player who could provide the Heat with a major boost would be Holiday.

Holiday’s blend of defense and scoring would mesh wonderfully within Miami’s vaunted culture, and his ability to break down defenses would give the Heat a much-needed second scoring option. His three-point shooting (33.8 percent this season) isn’t great, but considering the Heat are the league’s No. 3 team in three-point accuracy anyway at 38.2 percent, that deficiency could be masked pretty easily.

To make a deal happen, Miami could offer New Orleans a deal centered around Tyler Herro, a neutral contract like that of Kelly Olynyk and Justise Winslow (the Pelicans could use the frontcourt help anyway) and bad salaries like James Johnson or Dion Waiters. Losing Herro would hurt, but at least Miami would be getting rid of a bad contract in the process. Meanwhile, New Orleans would be getting what looks like one of the most promising players in the 2019 draft class.

Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES

The Minnesota Timberwolves, 10-15, sit 11th in the West despite Karl-Anthony Towns performing at an MVP level and Andrew Wiggins finally, at least somewhat, starting to live up to his draft status.

The one area Minnesota desperately needs help in is their backcourt, where Jeff Teague is struggling and the young tandem of Josh Okogie and Jarrett Culver have been horrific offensively (though decent on defense).

A lot of the rumors surrounding the Timberwolves over the past six months have connected them to Golden State Warriors point guard D’Angelo Russell, but Minnesota would be wise to look at Holiday as a potential target as well. Holiday doesn’t need the ball in his hands a ton to excel, meaning he wouldn’t take too many possessions away from Towns and Wiggins, and his defense on the outside is exactly what the Timberwolves could use to turn things around and make a push for the playoffs.

Minnesota could try and entice New Orleans to make a deal by offering a package including draft capital, either Culver or Okogie, as well as Teague or Gorgui Dieng as salary filler. Teague is an expiring deal, so the Pelicans probably wouldn’t be opposed to using him as a rental, considering he can still produce at a decent level.

Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS

Holiday originally hails from Southern California and he went to school at UCLA, so it’s only natural that one of the Los Angeles teams could be suitors for the one-time All-Star. And considering the frosty relations between New Orleans and the Los Angeles Lakers, that leaves us with just one option, the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Clippers are 20-8 so far this season and sit fifth league-wide in net rating at +6.7, so it’s not like they’ve been disappointing following the additions of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, but when looking at what their in-city rivals – the Lakers – are doing, there’s a good shot the Clippers are looking for ways to improve ahead of the trade deadline.

Holiday would make a lot of sense for Los Angeles, as his defensive prowess would give the Clippers three outstanding ball-stoppers in Holiday, George and Leonard, while his scoring would be a huge upgrade over what Patrick Beverley is giving the team on that end of the floor.

Any potential Holiday package will need to include Landry Shamet or L.A.’s 2020 first-round pick (it’s not like the Clippers need those with how stacked their roster is), as well as multiple other pieces (like Moe Harkless and Ivica Zubac) to make the salary swaps work. It would be tricky, and New Orleans would probably need to send a second cheap player like Jahlil Okafor or Kenrich Williams in return, but it wouldn’t be impossible.

[opinary poll=”would-you-try-to-trade-for-jrue-holiday-” customer=”hoopshype”]

DALLAS MAVERICKS

Like Miami, the Dallas Mavericks have been a pleasant surprise this season, sitting at 18-8 and third in the West through 26 games. Also like the Heat, however, Dallas likely needs at least one more piece to make a legit run at a title this season.

Holiday, like he would in just about any situation, would make Dallas better, a scary proposition considering the Mavs are third in net rating (+8.6) as is.

His scoring would give Luka Doncic a reliable backcourt partner to share the ball with, his pick-and-roll prowess, developed from his time with Anthony Davis, would fit nicely with Kristaps Porzingis’ pick-and-pop stylings, and his defense would allow Dallas to hide Doncic on opposing teams’ weaker scoring options.

A strong offer the Mavericks could package together for Holiday could include a protected first-rounder and reliable two-way guard Delon Wright, along with Courtney Lee’s expiring contract as salary filler.

If Dallas were to make this deal happen, a starting five featuring Holiday, Doncic, Dorian Finney-Smith, Porzingis and Dwight Powell features star power, scoring, defensive prowess and a good mix of role-playing pieces, and could make the Mavericks a team opponents will want to avoid once the postseason arrives.

Prediction

Clippers 118, Suns 111

Moneyline (ML)

The Clippers (-910) are heavily favored to win, but they’re not a great play. Risking over nine times the return is just hacky, even if you had this in a 10-game parlay. Plus, Ayton is a real wild card in his return for the Suns (+575).

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The SUNS (+12.5, -105) are on a 4-1-1 ATS run across their past six games, and 7-3 ATS in the past 10 games overall. They’re playing on the second end of a back-to-back, but they’re 9-3 ATS in the past 12 games when working on no rest. While the Suns are 0-7 ATS in the past seven trips to L.A., and 2-7 ATS in the past nine meetings, Ayton’s return should spark something in the Suns. However, watch Booker’s status, especially. If he is unable to return, it negates the return of Ayton substantially.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS. There are just too many variables to bet the total (224.5) in this game. Will Ayton return with a vengeance, or will he be rusty? Booker’s status also makes things rather questionable in terms of the total. The Over is 5-0 in Phoenix’s past five on no rest, and 4-0 in L.A.’s past four following a straight-up loss. If there is a lean, it’s to the Over (-128). But good luck with that. Too risky.

No load management for LeBron James: ‘If I’m healthy, I play”

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James reiterated that he won’t sit games if he is healthy enough to play.

As LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers continue to barnstorm through opposing NBA arenas on a nightly basis, the inevitable questions that have followed LeBron for the last decade have come along with it even though he continues to redefine what players can do in Year 17 of their NBA careers. Does LeBron need to take some games off?

The answer, for basically LeBron’s entire career, has been no. And Year 17 is no different when it comes to the NBA’s topic du jour of “Load Management.”Although crosstown rival Kawhi Leonard is still sitting games out to manage a knee issue, James is steadfast that if he’s healthy, he will play. Not only because he wants to play, but because fo the responsibility he feels for young fans in visiting cities paying to see him.

Transcribed by Christian Rivas of Silver Screen and Roll

“If I’m healthy, I play … I mean, that should be the approach. Unless we’re getting late into the season, we’ve clinched and we can’t get any better — or any worse — I could benefit from that. But why wouldn’t I play if I’m healthy? It doesn’t make any sense to me, personally. I mean, I don’t know how many games I got left in my career. I don’t know how many kids that may show up to a game that are there to come see me play — and if I sit out, then what? That’s my obligation. My obligation is to play for my teammates and if I’m healthy, then I’m going to play. If coach sits me out, then I’m not healthy and it’s just simple.”

James has often mentioned the responsibility he feels to play, especially when he’s on the road in cities where he will only visit once per year. So far this season, that attitude is driving the Lakers to a 14-1 road record, with their one road loss coming at Staples Center against the Clippers.

James and the Lakers have two games remaining on their current road trip, with Tuesday night in Indiana before a showdown against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the 23-3 Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday.

Report: Lakers offered Russell $100 million as back-up plan for Kawhi

The Los Angeles Lakers also pursued D’Angelo Russell in the offseason before settling on the role players that filled out their squad.

Considering how things are going for the Los Angeles Lakers right now, with a 22-3 record after 25 games, it’s hard to imagine any other reality being better than the one they are living in right now. But as it goes in the NBA, there were several sliding doors moments that could have changed the Lakers.

One of those sliding doors moments was Kawhi Leonard’s decision to join the L.A. Clippers after the Clippers traded for Paul George, deciding against joining the Lakers or staying with the Toronto Raptors. But until yesterday, we were unaware of the details on another potential moment that would have changed the complexion of the Lakers.

D’Angelo Russell was a serious back-up plan for the Lakers, according to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater.

Russell only wanted serious bidders and, sources say, he had three: The Lakers — wouldn’t that have been quite the reunion? — nearing a potential $100 million offer but in limbo until Kawhi Leonard made his choice, the Wolves, up over $100 million but still needing to create cap room to get to his max, and the Warriors, offering the full max in a complicated sign-and-trade involving Durant.

Although Russell would have had an opportunity to play for the Lakers under a new regime and with two new star players, the checkered past involving Russell and the Lakers is likely a big reason why he decided to take the bigger check to go play with Golden State.

Had Russell waited, the Lakers team they currently have would look a lot different. Danny Green probably wouldn’t be on the team and LeBron James almost certainly wouldn’t be leading the NBA in assists. But considering the high level of basketball the Lakers are playing right now, it’s hard to imagine how things could have worked out any better for the.

There’s a very good reason why Kawhi Leonard’s Raptors ring has a middle finger emoji on it

Still funny, though.

No, this is not the Toronto Raptors throwing a bunch of shade at Kawhi Leonard for bolting the franchise he helped for one year and joining the Los Angeles Clippers.

But yes, there is a middle finger printed on Leonard’s 2018-19 championship ring that he received from the Raps on Wednesday night, in which die-hards in the North showed him nothing but class in his return.

So here’s the reason why that’s on there: it’s a reminder to Leonard to wear the ring on his middle finger. Simple! But Leonard, as you may know, is a self-proclaimed “fun guy.” So he described the emoji as an “Eff you” symbol:

It would be way funnier if it was the other reason, but alas.

Raptors fans chanted MVP! at Kawhi Leonard in classy moment before his first game back

All class in Toronto upon Kawhi Leonard’s return.

Kawhi Leonard is making his first trip back to Toronto tonight since he led the Raptors to a NBA title last June.

And the fans were really happy to see him, which is pretty cool.

Leonard, of course, left town in the offseason to join the Los Angeles Clippers. But nobody can take his one year with the Raptors away from him as he led the city on a heck of a run last spring/summer that ended with a lot of parties after they beat the Warriors in the NBA Finals.

Leonard got his championship ring before Wednesday’s tip and fans showed their love for him with MVP champs and signs saying thanks:

How awesome is that?

This was just as awesome:

And here’s the video tribute they played for him:

All class in Toronto.

The HoopsHype Daily: Paul George made cryptic comments about the Pacers following big Clippers win

After dropping 36 points and guiding the Clippers to a win against his former team, the Pacers, George made cryptic comments about Indiana.

LAST NIGHT IN THE ASSOCIATION: Two buzzer-beating game-winners, both within moments of each other, and a star return to face his former team headlined a busy Monday night of NBA action.

🔥 Paul George played just his second game in Indiana as an opponent last night, and he showed out, dropping 36 points, nine boards and five assists against his former club. George was booed and chanted at multiple times throughout the game, and he didn’t seem too happy about it. After the game, George told the media that Pacers fans are directing their anger at the wrong person, and the people who should be getting booed have been in Indiana longer than he was. He refused to expound on his comments beyond that, though he did say he might one day do a tell-all about his Indiana departure. Weird.

🏀 First, Derrick Rose drove the lane with fewer than five seconds remaining in a tie game between Detroit and New Orleans, and hit a beautiful spinning mid-range fadeaway jumper from the elbow as the clock expired. Then, minutes later, Kings forward Nemanja Bjelica hit a 34-foot bomb against the Rockets to give Sacramento a huge road win. If we had to pick which game-winner was more impressive, we’d have to go with Bjelica’s considering his team was down by two at the time, and he shot it from a different area code.

🦌 We’d be remiss not to mention the Bucks won their 15th game in a row last night, beating the Magic 110-101 behind 32 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists from Giannis Antetokounmpo. That team looks unstoppable right now.

LOVE DISCUSSES POTENTIAL TRADE: Kevin Love spoke to ESPN about the latest rumors regarding the Cavs making him available for trade. He says nothing has changed, and that since he’s gotten to Cleveland, there have always been trade rumors hovering around his name, so this is no different. By his tone, though, it sounded like he doesn’t expect to be a Cavalier much longer.

🤦 For what it’s worth, Shams reported that Love would prefer a trade to a contender, which…well…duh.

MORE TRADE SCUTTLE: Shams also reported that teams are interested in Hornets forward Marvin Williams, who is shooting a tidy 40 percent from three this season, as well as in Nuggets guard Malik Beasley, who broke out in 2018-19 but has had a slow start to this campaign, despite nailing 41.2 percent of his three-point looks.

BUTLER/HERRO LOVE: Four-time All-Star Jimmy Butler and rookie Tyler Herro have a ton of respect for each other, particularly on Butler’s end towards the young buck. So much for the narrative about Butler being a terrible locker-room presence and too harsh towards young players, huh?

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Speaking of Butler, he was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week yesterday after averaging 27.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game the week prior. Meanwhile, Anthony Davis won it for the West after putting up a 35.0/8.0/2.5 stat line over four games for the Lakers.

🏆 Both players ranked highly in our latest MVP rankings, with Butler coming in at No. 6 and Davis at No. 5.

PROTEST DENIED: The Rockets’ protest over James Harden’s missed dunk was denied by the NBA, primarily because the league determined Houston had enough time in the fourth quarter and the two overtimes to overcome the mistake. Now, let’s hope we never have to hear about this story ever again.

WHO’S NEXT? Following the dismissal of David Fizdale, The Athletic breaks down which coach could be the next to get fired. Lots of juicy sourced information in there, including that Jim Boylen’s job appears to be safe, despite the Bulls being so disappointing this season.

A STERN WARNING: After his debacle of a tenure with Houston came to an end, Carmelo Anthony warned his buddy and fellow banana-boat team member Chris Paul to be wary of the Rockets. Turns out: He was right.

NEVER A DOUBT: While speaking to USA Today’s Jeff Zillgitt, Markelle Fultz claims he never had a doubt he could become a productive NBA player, he just needed to get past his injury troubles. Fultz dropped 13 points and nine assists against the Bucks last night.

MORE REFEREE COMPLAINTS: The Wizards went public with their belief that their lone All-Star, Bradley Beal, isn’t getting a fair whistle this season. Beal himself referred to the way he’s officiated as “unacceptable”. For what it’s worth, Beal’s free-throw assist rate this year is 34 percent. In comparison, James Harden’s is 60.3. Maybe Beal has a point.

TWO BIG RETURNS: Gordon Hayward returned for the Celtics last night without limitations. He dropped 14 points in 26 minutes, going 7-for-10 from the floor and contributing five rebounds and four assists against the hapless Cleveland Cavaliers.

🐻 Rookie of the Year contender Ja Morant also made his return last night, and he picked up right where left off, dropping 26 points on 14 field-goal attempts and dishing out seven assists. He was kind of mean to the Warriors’ defense most of the night.

JAMEER OPENS UP: Jameer Nelson spent 10-plus seasons in Orlando, and one of the major storylines during his time was there was the Dwight Howard exit drama. He talked to us about that whole saga, and he did not hold back.

FRESH POD: Our very own Alex Kennedy is joined by colleague Bryan Kalbrosky to discuss the Knicks’ coaching search and how sustainable the Lakers’ early-season success is.

QUICK DEVELOPMENT: The 76ers probably didn’t expect Matisse Thybulle, a defense-first player, to be nailing 44.0 percent of his threes at this point in his career after being a 35.8 percent three-point shooter over four years in college. We broke down his excellent shooting start here.

NBA OPEN TO BUSINESS: League commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that the NBA could launch an investment vehicle for private equity firms to buy minority stakes in franchises. Investors might even be able to invest in multiple teams, which is probably the most interesting part of that news.

The Clippers played a game of hot potato to avoid taking credit for a turnover

So good.

Shhhhh. No one tell any NBA players that a shot clock violation results in a team turnover and not one charged to the person left holding the ball.

Because it keeps delighting and entertaining us NBA fans to no end.

After we saw Josh Hart give the ball to rookie center Jaxson Hayes at the end of a New Orleans Pelicans blowout, Dwight Howard tried the same thing in a Los Angeles Lakers win and failed.

And now we have what happened at the end of the Los Angeles Clippers’ win over the Indiana Pacers on Monday night: Patrick Beverley and Derick Walton Jr. playing a game of Hot Potato with a basketball:

Rob Perez, AKA @WorldWideWob, calls it The Ballbonic Plague, which is great:

Please keep doing this, NBA players.
