Los Angeles Angels at San Diego Padres odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Los Angeles Angels at San Diego Padres odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Los Angeles Angels (45-42) take on the San Diego Padres (39-46) in the middle game of a 3-game set Tuesday at Petco Park. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m. ET (TBS). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Angels vs. Padres odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Padres lead 1-0.

The Halos have dropped 5 of 6 games, including Monday’s tilt 10-3, a slump that has dropped them 6 games back in the AL West. The Angels are averaging just 3.6 runs per game in the 9 games since their 25-run explosion against the Colorado Rockies on June 24.

Los Angeles is a respectable 22-22 on the road but just 11-13 in interleague play this season. OF Mike Trout left Monday’s game after injuring his wrist on a swing and is probably doubtful Tuesday.

The Padres have lost 7 of their last 9 games as their turbulent season continues. San Diego has really struggled in 1-run games at 5-15 and is 0-7 in extra innings. The Friars are 11 games back in the NL West. They managed a 10-3 win Monday in the series opener despite allowing 14 hits and issuing 6 walks by holding the Angels to 4-for-16 with runners in scoring position, resulting in 14 men left on base.

Angels at Padres projected starters

RHP Shohei Ohtani vs. RHP Joe Musgrove

Ohtani (7-3, 3.02 ERA) makes his 17th start. He has a 1.04 WHIP, 3.7 BB/9 and 12.0 K/9 through 95 1/3 IP.

  • Last start: Win, 6 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 10 K last Tuesday against Chicago White Sox
  • Has never faced Padres
  • A little more hittable on the road in 2023: 4.03 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 11.4 K/9 in 7 road starts vs. 2.35 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 12.4 K/9 in 9 home starts

Musgrove (6-2, 3.80 ERA) makes his 13th start. He has a 1.27 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9 and 8.3 K/9 across 66 1/3 IP.

Angels at Padres picks and predictions

Prediction

Padres 4, Angels 1

Moneyline

I like the Padres in this spot. Musgrove has allowed 2 ER or fewer in 6 of his last 7 starts with a 2.13 ERA during the stretch. The Angels are scuffling offensively, and now Trout could be lost for a stretch. Ohtani will give the Halos a chance, but San Diego takes it late.

Take the PADRES (-130).

Run line/Against the spread

We’re picking the Padres for a multi-run win, but it’s a little too risky for me with Ohtani on the hill to make a meaningful wager on, so that’s a PASS.

The Padres haven’t seen Ohtani on the mound before, and I look for him to light them up. He has 22 K’s in his last 2 starts.

Take SHOHEI OHTANI OVER 7.5 K’S (+100).

Over/Under

The Angels are 4-6 O/U over the last 10 and the Padres are 7-2-1. The Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings between these clubs in San Diego and 5-2 in the last 7 meetings overall.

There is a 9-mph breeze coming in from left-center field on what is projected to be a 73-degree evening. It’s a pitchers’ park, and I favor the UNDER 7.5 (-120) Tuesday night.

Los Angeles Angels at San Diego Padres odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Los Angeles Angels at San Diego Padres odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Los Angeles Angels (69-70) and San Diego Padres (73-65) cloe out a two-game interleague series Wednesday at Petco Park. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Angels vs. Padres odds with MLB picks and predictions.

The Angels had not named a starting pitcher by the time of publishing but are expected to go with a bullpen day.

Padres RHP Yu Darvish (7-9, 4.05 ERA) makes his 26th start. He has a 1.07 WHIP, 10.7 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 through 140 IP.

  • Pounded for 6 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits with 3 strikeouts in just 2 2/3 IP in a loss at the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday.
  • Has lost seven straight decisions across nine starts since July 3 after starting the season with a 7-2 record.

Prediction

Padres 6, Angels 5

Money line (ML)

The Padres (-300) are a little too expensive, and they’re a bit risky with the struggling Darvish on the hill. Conversely, I don’t like the Angels using an opener in a bullpen game, either.

AVOID.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

ANGELS +1.5 (+105) are the play here, as Darvish has been horrible lately and the Padres offense hasn’t been much better. They were blanked by Packy Naughton and the Halos Tuesday night, as the Padres failed to win or cover as huge favorites.

The Padres could find their hitting shoes in this series finale but look for the Angels to keep it close.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 7.5 (-125) is the play in this interleague series finale, as the Angels are using a bullpen day and Darvish has been very giving lately, too.

The Angels are 13th in the American League with a bullpen ERA of 4.58, so the Padres should be able to get their bats going after getting blanked Tuesday. The Angels will also get to Darvish, who has allowed 4 or more runs in three straight starts, and seven of his past nine outings.

Los Angeles Angels at San Diego Padres odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Los Angeles Angels at San Diego Padres odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Los Angeles Angels (68-70) and San Diego Padres (73-64) play the opener of a two-game interleague series Tuesday at Petco Park. First pitch is scheduled for 10:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Angels vs. Padres odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Angels LHP Packy Naughton makes his second start and fourth appearance. He has allowed 6 runs (4 earned) on 11 hits and 5 walks with 4 strikeouts over 9 total innings spanning one start and two relief appearances.

  • Allowed 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks over 3 2/3 IP in his first major-league start Wednesday in a loss to the New York Yankees.
  • Faced the Padres in long relief at Angel Stadium Aug. 27, and allowed just 2 unearned runs on 3 hits and 2 walks over 4 1/3 IP.

Padres LHP Blake Snell (7-5, 4.31 ERA) makes his 26th start. He has a 1.38 WHIP, 11.8 K/9 and 5.0 BB/9 through 121 IP.

  • Walked 2 and struck out 10 across 7 no-hit and scoreless innings in a win Aug. 31 at the Arizona Diamondbacks.
  • Capped off August with a 3-1 record and 1.72 ERA, while striking out 54 batters across 36 2/3 IP over six starts.

  • Money line: Angels +280 (bet $100 to win $280) | Padres -370 (bet $370 to win $100)

Prediction

Padres 6, Angels 1

Money line (ML)

The Padres (-370) are a little on the expensive side. Snell has been dominant, but you can’t risk this much for so little reward.

AVOID, and look to the run line.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

PADRES -2.5 (-105) are a tremendous play in this interleague series opener in this pitching mismatch. The southpaw Snell has been lights out lately, while Naughton is making just his second career start.

As such, take the home side to win by at least 3 runs. In four of the Padres’ last five wins, they won by 2 or more runs, too, so you can feel confident in this wager.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 7.5 (-107) is the play here, as nobody has been able to get anything off of Snell lately.

The Under connected in four of the last five games for the Halos, while going 7-2 in their last nine games on the road against winning teams.

The Under is 6-2-2 in the Padres’ last 10 home games, while also cashing in four of the last five meetings between these two teams.
