Notre Dame has found itself trading touchdowns with North Carolina. It’s a little surprising given how little success the Irish have had on offense for the first month of the season, but we’ll take it. The question is whether they can survive a blow-for-blow game for 60 minutes. The answer to that will come soon enough.

After a game-tying score by [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag], the Irish took the lead on a 30-yard play-action touchdown pass from [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] to [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag]. The Tar Heels responded quickly when Drake Maye hit J.J. Jones for a 43-yard reception to the Notre Dame 3-yard line, then found Josh Downs for his second touchdown of the game three players later. The game wouldn’t stay tied for long as a series of big runs and a couple of nice passes got the Irish to the 1. It was from there that [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] ran into the end zone to put the Irish back in front.

The Irish made the lead 24-14 on a 40-yard field goal from [autotag]Blake Grupe[/autotag], but here’s how Twitter reacted to the go-ahead score:

Twitter reacts to Michael Mayer touchdown to put Notre Dame on board

Nice first touchdown.

To put it lightly, Notre Dame had a bad first quarter against North Carolina. The defense allowed a 12-play, 76-yard drive that culminated in a fourth-down touchdown for the Tar Heels. The offense barely could gain any yardage to save itself. The result was a 7-0 Heels lead after the first 15 minutes.

Once the second quarter began, the offense finally showed signs of life. The first play saw [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] connect with [autotag]Logan Diggs[/autotag] for a 34-yard completion to get into Heels territory. After three straight runs from [autotag]Chris Tyree[/autotag], Pyne completed a pass beneath the Heels’ secondary to [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag], who ran for a 10-yard touchdown to tie the game:

Mayer entered the week with fewer receiving yards than [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag]. Hopefully, this is the game that gives him the team lead for good. Until we can find that out, look at how Twitter users expressed themselves after Mayer’s latest touchdown:

Let’s get wild, week four: Statistical predictions for Notre Dame at UNC

Who has a big game for the Irish?

The Irish finally got the monkey off their backs and won their first game of the Marcus Freeman era last week and look to start a winning streak. They won’t get an easy opponent as the host Tar Heels can score with the best teams in the country. Notre Dame has gotten better each week and will need to continue that trend in order for them to get their first road victory of the 2022 season. Here are five statistical guesses for the Irish today.

Tale of the Tape: Leading Receivers – Lorenzo Styles vs. Kobe Paysour

A bunch of blah here.

Notre Dame and North Carolina haven’t exactly wowed everyone with their receiver play to this point. [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag] should be in this spot for the Irish through three games, but we get [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag], who has to even record a touchdown this season, instead.

This is not an indictment of Styles’ ability or drive to be the best he can be, but the fact that he’s barely averaging 50 yards a game as the Irish’s receiving leader reflects badly on [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag]’ offense and really, the whole team. Even though the Irish somewhat have been backed into a corner with their quarterback situation, they need to right this ship and fast.

The Tar Heels have Kobe Paysour in this spot, but that also is an anomaly. That’s because Josh Downs, one of the top receivers in the country last season, will return after missing two games with a knee injury. That’s not to say Paysour won’t play a factor in this contest. Still, there’s little doubt the Heels will look to Downs first.

Notre Dame statistical leaders through three games

How is Buchner still on this list?

Finally, Notre Dame has a win to its name in 2022. It’s pretty sad that we have to say that three games into the season, but here we are. Let’s see if the second win can come against North Carolina. Here are the players most likely to make that happen (minus the quarterback):

The day after: Lasting thoughts on Notre Dame’s win over Cal

What are you still thinking about after the Irish’s first win this season?

First, off, I want to apologize for the lateness of this post. Kinda had an important event, my sister got married. We know all good college football fans wouldn’t ever think of doing having a fall wedding, and my sister isn’t the biggest sports fan at all.

Anyways, even though the Irish got their first win of 2022, there are plenty of thoughts that have gone through my mind over the last day and here they are.

Notre Dame starting quarterback out for the year

Pyne time. How you feeling?

One of the most asked questions by Notre Dame fans this offseason was if quarterback [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] could stay healthy for an entire season. Unfortunately we already have that answer, and we’re only through two games, which means just one thing.

Nope.

Buchner left Saturday’s loss to Marshall with a shoulder injury and we now know he suffered a high grade shoulder strain that will require surgery according to [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag]. The sophomore quarterback’s season is officially done.

Now enter [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag], who went 3 of 6 passing with a touchdown and interception in relief duty against Marshall. The junior quarterback stepped in effectively enough to help beat Wisconsin last season, but is just 20 of 39 (51.3%) passing in his career for 256 yards (6.6 average), three touchdowns and an interception.

Since Buchner completed his first pass attempt of 2022 for 54 yards to [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag], Notre Dame quarterbacks have gone 30 of 55 for 344 yards (6.25 average) with one touchdown and three interceptions.

Let’s get wild, week 2: Stat predictions for Notre Dame vs. Marshall

Who had a big game for the Irish?

The Irish home opener is here and it should be a very prosperous one as they welcome Marshall to South Bend. After a week one loss, Notre Dame has a lot to work on, especially on offense. Here are five statistical predictions for the Irish as they set to face the Thundering Herd.

Tale of the Tape: Leading Receivers – Lorenzo Styles vs. Talik Keaton

Think Lorenzo will be in this spot at season’s end?

It sure would be nice to see [autotag]Lorenzo Styles[/autotag] in this post every week because it would mean Notre Dame is lucky to have a breakout receiver. After all, there’s little chance that someone other than [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag] will end the season as the Irish’s top receiver. But for the moment, Styles has a single long reception that set up one of his team’s scores in the loss to Ohio State. It probably says more about the Irish in that game than Styles himself.

Marshall’s top receiver entering Notre Dame Stadium is Talik Keaton, who showed some consistency in his first game if nothing spectacular. Like Styles though, he has yet to score a touchdown. While it would be nice to see Styles get on the board there in this game, Keaton has to be the most likely candidate to score whatever touchdowns the Herd can get. The Irish’s defense won’t make that easy.
