Blue Devils climb one spot in D1Baseball after back-to-back Sunday blowout victories

The Blue Devils swept a Sunday doubleheader against Longwood by 30 combined runs, but the real test comes in the coming weeks.

Duke baseball averaged 2.43 runs per inning during Sunday’s doubleheader against Longwood. We’re no math experts here at Duke Wire, but early results say that’s good.

The Blue Devils climbed one spot up to ninth in Monday’s D1Baseball rankings after beating the Lancers 23-3 and 11-1 over the weekend, both seven-inning mercy rule wins.

The one-spot shift means Duke now occupies the No. 9 spot on both D1Baseball’s rankings and the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Tennesee took over the top spot and ACC-leading Clemson shifted up to second after Texas A&M, who had owned the No. 1 slot, dropped two out of three on the road against LSU.

The Blue Devils are the third-highest ACC team in the rankings behind Florida State at eighth, but Virginia (10th), North Carolina (11th), and Wake Forest (12th) breathe down Duke’s neck.

Duke has a great chance to vault upwards with a Tuesday road trip to No. 6 East Carolina, who currently sports a 37-9 record.

Duke’s series loss to FSU drops Blue Devils to 10th in latest D1 Baseball poll

Duke remains in top 10 of the D1Baseball poll despite series loss to FSU.

Duke had a chance to bolster its postseason resume this weekend in a pivotal home series against a ranked FSU team.

Instead, Duke fell short in the Friday and Saturday games before exploding for a run-rule win on Sunday afternoon.

With its loss to the Seminoles and midweek loss to the Campbell Camels that completed a home-and-home series, Duke finished last week 1-3 and slid down to 10th in the newest D1Baseball poll.

Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Tennessee remained the poll’s top three teams for another week. Clemson moved up a spot to fourth, while ECU, who is scheduled to take on Duke in May, is now the fifth-ranked team in the country. Oregon State moved three places to sixth, while Florida State jumped from tenth to seventh. Kentucky and UC Irvine round out the remaining teams ahead of the Blue Devils.

The rest of the ACC continues to be featured up and down the poll, with Virginia, North Carolina, and Wake Forest coming in at 11, 12, and 13. NC State rounds things out on the 20th.

Duke heads for the exam break this week and will have no midweek games before returning to action on Sunday against the Longwood Lancers. The first pitch for game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Where is Longwood located as the Lancers play in March Madness 2024

Longwood’s been around for nearly 200 years … but only been in Division I for 19.

The Longwood Lancers don’t get much attention. Such is the plight of a Big South program.

But while the Lancers have only been a Division I member since 2004, it doesn’t mean Longwood is new on the scene. In fact, Longwood University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the country. Founded in 1839 as Farmville Female Seminary, it underwent seven name changes before settling on its current title.

The school may be best known for bringing high-level low-major softball to Farmville, Virginia — a town in the middle of the state roughly an hour and 15 minutes west of Richmond.

2024 marks the men’s basketball program’s second invitation to the big dance, though it had made four other NCAA tournament appearances over its time in both the Division III and Division II ranks.
