Is Loghan Thomas playing today? Injury updates for Notre Dame defensive lineman

Notre Dame defensive lineman Loghan Thomas is dealing with a right hamstring injury. Here are the latest updates.

Defensive lineman [autotag]Loghan Thomas[/autotag] is out for the No. 10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish tonight against the Florida State Seminoles.

The freshman is sidelined with a right hamstring injury.

Notre Dame has listed all other student-athletes on the two-deep roster as available. That makes us wonder if kicker [autotag]Mitch Jeter[/autotag] is finally ready to play as he deals with a hip injury.

The Fighting Irish also return freshman cornerback Tae Johnson as the backup to [autotag]Leonard Moore[/autotag]. [autotag]Karon Hobbs[/autotag], who was in that spot last week, is now the backup nickel corner to [autotag]Jordan Clark[/autotag].

Otherwise, the Irish are getting healthier, though key players such as [autotag]Jordan Botelho[/autotag] are out for the season.

Notre Dame injury update

Notre Dame will be without Loghan Thomas this week, and [autotag]Jason Onye[/autotag] remains out for personal reasons.

How long will Loghan Thomas be out?

It is unclear how long Thomas will be out beyond this week.

Notre Dame defensive lineman depth chart

Thomas’ loss will be felt, but the Irish still have a deep defensive line. Thomas was already listed at third on the depth chart for the Vyper pass-rushing position behind [autotag]Joshua Burnham[/autotag] and [autotag]Junior Tuihalamaka[/autotag].

Who can replace Boubacar Traore for Notre Dame?

Here’s who may replace Boubacar Traore.

Notre Dame has lost another key defensive lineman to injury. Now the Fighting Irish will have to look for a replacement.

End [autotag]Boubacar Traore[/autotag] is out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. The defensive end was injured in the first half of the Fighting Irish’s 31-24 win over the Louisville Cardinals. Traore had 11 tackles, five tackles for loss, and led the Irish with three sacks. He was also tied for second on the team for most quarterback pressures with eight — Howard Cross III has the most at 9.

With Traore joining Jordan Botelho on the injured list, who’s next?

[autotag]Junior Tuihalamaka[/autotag] seems the most likely replacement. Thus far the junior has seven tackles, two tackles for loss, and a half of a sack.

Freshman [autotag]Loghan Thomas[/autotag], who played 14 snaps versus Louisville, seems likely to see a lot more action.

Head coach Marcus Freeman also pointed to Josh Burnham, who is returning from injury, RJ Oben, and Bryce Young, as possible replacements.

“Josh is a guy that could play either field end or Vyper for us. RJ Oben and Bryce Young, obviously, have done a good job at the field end position, and Junior has done a really good job stepping up at the Vyper position, as well as Loghan Thomas getting some reps,” Freeman said. “And so you have five quality individuals that can play the end position for us. And we’ve got to have guys step up, just like Junior has done. And I’m confident that if something would happen again that we’ll have to have another guy step up.”

Vyper is another term for rush end.

Burnham and Young each have four tackles and 1 quarterback hit, and Young has blocked a kick on special teams. Thomas has one tackle and 1 quarterback hit, while Oben has eight tackles — four solo and four assisted.

Based on Freeman’s quote, Tuihalamaka seems likeliest to have the most impact with Traore out, with Burnham and Thomas following. Oben and and Young seem more likely to see most of their reps at field end.

Either way, Traore’s loss is a tough pill to swallow for the Irish.

Watch: Notre Dame defensive end commit rocking Irish gear during workout

You love to see it

When [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] landed a commitment from Texas defensive end [autotag]Loghan Thomas[/autotag], it was viewed as an extremely important recruiting win for the Irish.

Thomas, standing 6-foot, 3-inch and weighing 210 pounds, is seems as one of the best prospects at his position. The 247Sports composite ranks him as the 10th best at his position, and the 186th overall player at his position.

The edge rusher is the highest ranked commit on the defensive side of the ball for the 2024 Notre Dame class. Thomas has been working hard during the off-season to prepare himself for his final year of high school football and it shows.

In a video shared by Will Turboff, Thomas is seen going through a drill wearing an Irish t-shirt.

He looks smooth going through the tackling dummies, working on his hand placement and then showing off his speed to finish the play. Irish nation should be extremely excited about Thomas’ future in South Bend.

Notre Dame trending the wrong way with 5-star Arizona defensive end

Sigh…

It’s an understatement to say that [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] is having a rough last two weeks on the recruiting trail.

There was a chance for the Irish to wash away their bad mojo with 5-star Arizona defensive end [autotag]Elijah Rushing[/autotag]. The 6-foot, 5-inch and 251 pound player is set to make his verbal commitment tomorrow, but it’s looking like he won’t be selecting Notre Dame.

Rushing took an official visit to South Bend in early June and the Irish made a solid impression. However, the 3rd ranked edge and 27th overall prospect according to the 247Sports composite has their director of recruiting, Steve Wiltfong, believing that Arizona is now the team to beat.

The Irish really needed another impact defensive lineman to pair with commit [autotag]Loghan Thomas[/autotag] for their 2024 recruiting class, but has yet to find one. This isn’t a knock on the other commits [autotag]Bryce Young[/autotag], [autotag]Sean Sevillano Jr.[/autotag], or [autotag]Cole Mullins[/autotag], it’s just that they most likely aren’t prospects who will see the field immediately for the Irish.

It looks like the search will continue for [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and his coaching staff.

Notre Dame gets a commitment from 2024 4-star defensive end

The Irish lost a defensive end and gained one on Wednesday

On Wednesday morning [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] lost a defensive end, Owen Wafle, but they also added one in [autotag]Loghan Thomas[/autotag].

The 4-star defensive end from Texas committed to the Irish over Georgia, Texas Tech, Arizona and Oklahoma. At 6-foot, 3-inches and 210 pounds, Thomas becomes the highest ranked defensive commit of the 2024 Notre Dame recruiting class.

The 247Sports composite has him as the 14th best edge rusher and 177th player overall. The Notre Dame class now has sixteen total commitments and is viewed as one of the top groups in the country. With the addition of Thomas and loss of Wafle, the defensive end count for the class remains the same at three.

There will most likely be at least one more addition to the group as the early signing period closes in.

Notre Dame 4-star defensive end target will commit on Wednesday

The Irish could be adding another one to their 2024 class tomorrow

Although [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] has three defensive line commits in the 2024 class, head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] seems to be looking for at least one more.

That player could be Texas’ [autotag]Loghan Thomas[/autotag]. The 6-foot, 3-inch and 210-pound pass rusher is set to commit Wednesday afternoon. The Irish are a finalist along with Arizona, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Georgia.

Thomas is the 14th-best edge defender and 176th overall player on the 247Sports composite. He would be the highest-ranked defensive end in the Irish class, and third overall, if he were to commit.

Hopefully, Fighting Irish Wire will bring good news Wednesday, especially considering every 247Sports crystal ball projection for Thomas is to the Irish.

2024 4-Star EDGE Loghan Thomas places Texas A&M inside his Top 10

Talented 2024 EDGE Loghan Thomas has narrowed down his options, officially placing the Aggies among his Top 10 programs

When Texas and Oklahoma finally make the move to the SEC ahead of the 2024 college football season, recruiting in talent-rich Texas is going be even tougher from a competition standpoint, as Texas A&M Head coach Jimbo Fisher will need to rely on his past recruiting success while producing results on the field in order to land some of the top prospects for the 2024 cycle.

This week, 2024 4-Star EDGE Loghan Thomas announced his official Top 10 school list heading into the final stages of his recruiting journey, as the Katy, Texas native placed Texas A&M among nine other programs, including Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Arizona, USC, Notre Dame, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Colorado.

Coincidentally, Thomas attends Paetow High School, a program the Aggies are very fond of after landing 5-Star DT D.J Hicks, and 4-Star EDGE Daymion Sanford. Thomas, who stands at 6-3, and 210 lbs, is a highly versatile defensive prospect with the ability to play off the edge or drop back in coverage, displaying a high motor and consistent ability to get off blocks, oozing potential at the Division 1 level.

Thomas is currently ranked as the 16th EGDE prospect and 34th player in Texas for the 2024 recruiting class.

Oklahoma Sooners offer 2024 4-Star EDGE Loghan Thomas

The Oklahoma Sooners extended an offer to 2024 four-star edge rusher Loghan Thomas out of Katy, Texas.

The Oklahoma Sooners have been relentless in their pursuit of players who can get after the passer in the 2022 and 2023 recruiting cycles. In the transfer portal this offseason, they’ve looked to add help across the defensive line.

They won’t rest until they build a defensive front that can match the best in the country. To that end, they extended an offer to 2024 four-star edge Loghan Thomas out of Katy, Texas.

Thomas is a four-star prospect, according to 247Sports and On3. As a junior, he’s got the size to be disruptive off the edge, using his length to disrupt offensive tackles in their pass sets. He does a great job rallying to the ball carrier in backside pursuit and doesn’t give up on a play. He’s able to win using a long arm and has the bend to slip under offensive tackles when rushing the quarterback.

The Sooners are the eighth Power Five offer that Thomas has received if you include Houston, who will join the Big 12 in 2024. He’s also received an offer from Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
