Sam Presti talks about potential new arena in end-of-season press conference

Here’s what Sam Presti had to say about talks of a potential new arena.

It’ll be a years-long process, but discussions for a new arena for the Oklahoma City Thunder began last summer when OKC Mayor David Holt brought up the importance of it.

The creation of a new building would guarantee the Thunder’s long-term future in Oklahoma City. The Thunder are playing in Paycom Center, which is the smallest arena in the league. It has been their home since their inaugural 2008-09 season.

When asked for updates in his end-of-season press conference, Thunder general manager Sam Presti essentially said the ball is in OKC’s court.

“That’s really a Mayor Holt thing, so I’d really defer to him,” Presti said. “I know he’s talked about it a little bit publicly, but I don’t want to like step out of my lane on that. It’s really his thing.

“I commend him because he’s thinking forward about the future of the city, and I think that’s what’s driving his focus on that. But I don’t want to talk about that without — he’s the one that needs to speak about it, I think.”

As said, this will likely take several years to plan as building a new arena is a complex and expensive project. While it’ll be a while before we get an actual update, it’s a clear positive sign that both the city and franchise seem to be on the same page when it comes to the importance of a new arena.

Carolina Panthers hosting Wisconsin LB Nick Herbig for a ‘top-30’ visit

With seven days left until the 2023 NFL draft, a number of Badgers are in the final stages of trying to impress NFL teams.

Teams are allowed to bring in 30 players for interviews and workouts leading up to the draft, and the Panthers have likely hosted Wisconsin linebacker Nick Herbig as one of those visits according to a tip from Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer.

Herbig posted the Panthers Bank of America Stadium on his Instagram story earlier this week.

Takeaways from Chris Ballard’s pre-draft press conference

A quick rundown of Colts GM Chris Ballard’s pre-draft presser.

Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard met with the media Friday, holding his usual press conference ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

While Ballard has never been one to show his cards before the draft, he discussed the quarterback position and some of the stronger position classes in this draft. He also touched on the Stephon Gilmore trade and other additions they’d like to make to the roster in free agency.

Here’s a quick look at the main notes from Ballard’s pre-draft press conference on Friday:

2 Cowboys opponents hit with player suspensions in 2023 for gambling

From @ToddBrock24f7: Washington had one player suspended indefinitely; Detroit got two indefinite suspensions and six-game bans for two other players.

Two of the Cowboys’ 2023 opponents will see their rosters depleted after the NFL levied suspensions against a total of five players for violating the league’s gambling policy.

Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney has been suspended indefinitely, according to Friday news reports. Toney, who was entering his third season out of Penn State, can apply for reinstatement after one year.

Detroit wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore were also suspended indefinitely; they were both released by the team upon the annoucement. Additionally, Lions wide receivers Jameson Williams- the 12th overall pick in last year’s draft- and Stanley Berryhill have been suspended for the first six games of the regular season.

The three players who were suspended indefinitely were found to have placed bets on NFL games; the two players with shorter suspensions conducted mobile betting- but not on NFL games- while at Lions headquarters.

Wagering on NFL games, the draft, or any league-related activity is strictly off-limits to all NFL players and personnel, per league policy. Placing bets while at a team facility or on team-related travel is also banned.

Several Lions staffers in various departments were previously dismissed in March for violating the gambling policy.

The NFL had been conducting an investigation into this most recent batch of players, and both teams had been previously notified that their players would receive suspensions.

The Cowboys will face the Lions and the Commanders (twice) as opponents in the 2023 regular season, though it is not yet known when.

Jameson Williams to lose $6.877M in guaranteed salary due to suspension

Jameson Williams will take a huge financial hit from his gambling suspension, losing out on nearly $7M in guaranteed salary

Jameson Williams’ rookie season got off to a late start due to a torn ACL suffered in college and he’ll now miss the start of his 2023 campaign, too. The NFL suspended Williams six games due to a gambling violation, along with three other Lions players.

It’s a significant loss for Detroit, but it’ll also be a hit to Williams’ bank account. According to Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap, Williams will lose at least $382,906 in salary, as well as $6.877 million in guaranteed salary – $5.37 million of which was set to come in 2024 and 2025.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Williams’ suspension is the result of him gambling on college games while at the Lions’ facility. Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore received indefinite suspensions of at least one year for gambling on NFL games, the same suspension Calvin Ridley received last year.

Williams is expected to be a big part of the Lions offense next season but he won’t get the chance to play in any games until at least Week 7, depending on when the Lions’ bye week is.

Sam Presti confirms OKC Thunder will play in two summer leagues again

The Thunder will have two separate Summer Leagues once again this year.

During his end-of-season presser, Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti confirmed they will once again play in two summer leagues.

The Thunder played in two summer leagues last year as well: Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. The former was used for mostly the rookies and bubble roster players while the latter was used for the second-and-third year players on the roster.

“More reps, different environments, more opportunities,” Presti said on the benefits of playing two summer leagues. “The hard part is you just can’t play everybody the whole time because the schedule is pretty grueling. But our guys played — they soaked it up last year. We had to take a couple guys off the floor because they were just toast by the end. I think it’s great for us to do that. I’m a fan of doing that.”

The impending Thunder rookie class as well as some sophomore and junior players will likely make appearances in summer league. Ousmane Deing confirmed he’ll play in it during exit interviews.

The biggest draw could be Chet Holmgren though. Presti said it was a possible he plays in summer league. The No. 2 pick missed the entire season recovering from a season-ending Lisfranc injury. Holmgren is still rehabbing and is close to beginning 5v5 play.

Lions release Quintez Cephus, C.J. Moore following gambling suspensions

The Lions didn’t waste any time releasing Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore after they were suspended for gambling violations

The Detroit Lions moved on from two of the four players who were suspended due to gambling violations on Friday. The team released safety C.J. Moore and wide receiver Quintez Cephus after both of them were served indefinite suspensions for gambling; they will miss at least one season as a result.

Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill were also suspended six games but they remain on the roster.

Cephus had been with the Lions since 2020 when he was selected in the fifth round of the draft. He played 22 games and made six starts, totaling 568 yards receiving with four touchdowns. He played just four games last season and five in 2021.

Moore was with the Lions for the last four seasons, playing 56 games with one start. He was primarily a special teams player, only playing about 15% of the snaps the last two seasons in Detroit.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

According to Ian Rapoport, Cephus and Moore were found to have bet on NFL games, which is why they were suspended at least a year. Williams and Berryhill were found to have bet on college games, doing so at the Lions’ facility.
