Bradley Chubb explains why Vic Fangio is one of his favorite coaches

The two obviously have a relationship from their time together in Denver.

During Miami Dolphins linebacker Bradley Chubb’s football career, he’s had a number of coaches from high school to college to the pros.

Since entering the league back in 2018, he’s played for four different head coaches, and he’s about to have his fifth different defensive coordinator. Lucky for him, however, his new defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, is also his former head coach, so there’s a familiarity there.

In fact, Chubb enjoyed his time playing for Fangio during their time together with the Denver Broncos. During the linebacker media’s availability on Tuesday, he explained why he thinks so highly of the coach.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

“Yeah, that’s one of my favorite coaches that I’ve been in a room with just because he expects so much out of his players, and he’s going to keep it straight up with you,” Chubb said. “If he calls a play and you didn’t execute, he’s going to ask you, ‘Why didn’t you execute? I put you in a position to execute. Why didn’t you?’ So in this high-paced game we play, that’s what you need. You just need that transparency. You need somebody to be on you a little bit to hold you to that standard that we hold ourselves to. That’s what he’s going to do and I’m excited about it.”

Miami moved on from Josh Boyer as defensive coordinator this offseason after a tough year for the team, defensively. The Dolphins ranked 24th in scoring defense (24.1 points allowed per game) and 19th in total defense (342.6 yards allowed per game). And, while they certainly had their fair share of injuries on that side of the ball, decision-making on Boyer’s part was a big reason for his firing.

Fangio has the experience an respect of coaches and players around the league, and with guys like Chubb speaking for him, he should be able to quickly command the room and help turn the unit into one that is among the league’s best.

Colts’ 2023 NFL draft big board: Cornerbacks

Wrapping up our positional big board rankings with the cornerbacks.

The Indianapolis Colts are ready to enter the 2023 NFL draft with a massive need to add to the cornerback position.

After trading away Stephon Gilmore to the Dallas Cowboys, the room is extremely thin. Kenny Moore II and Isaiah Rodgers Sr. are currently the projected starters, but they are both in a contract year. 2022 undrafted free agent Dallis Flowers is currently third on the depth chart.

Fortunately for the Colts, this draft is littered with talent at the cornerback position. It wouldn’t be a surprise at all if they used two of their picks to add depth and competition to the room.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

It would be best to avoid adding to the room on Day 2 if they can, and there are some promising Day 3 prospects to consider. But using a Day 2 pick on a linebacker would seem a bit luxurious unless the prospect is far and away the highest-rated player on their board.

As we break down the prospects by round, think of the “rounds” as tiers and when I believe the team should begin to consider drafting them.

We also created big boards at the following positions:

Quarterbacks Running Backs Wide Receivers Tight Ends Interior OL Offensive Tackles
Defensive Tackles Edge Rushers Linebackers Cornerbacks Safeties

Here’s a look at my big board for the cornerbacks as it relates to the Colts in the 2023 NFL draft:

How is Rutgers football trending with three-star offensive lineman Jack Hines? Will they get an official visit?

Jack Hines took a visit to Rutgers football this past weekend.

Fresh off a weekend visit to Rutgers football, Connecticut offensive lineman Jack Hines has the Scarlet Knights trending well in his recruitment.

One of several standouts who visited Rutgers this past weekend for Saturday’s scrimmage, Hines is a three-star recruit from Avon Old Farms (Avon, CT).

According to 247Sports, Hines is ranked the tenth best prospect in Connecticut and the No. 76 offensive tackle in the nation. In March, he was offered by North Carolina as well as Florida State.

He holds other Power Five offers from Boston College, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Wake Forest and West Virginia among others

“It was a great day,” Hines told Rutgers Wire of his Saturday visit to Rutgers.

“I brought my uncle and cousin down this time, they had a good time. It was good seeing coach Flats  in the meeting rooms and on the field, getting to see how (the staff) coaches. Getting to meet some of the players really stood out to me. They seem like great people there.”

The growing relationship between Hines and Flaherty is well-documented. Saturday was another opportunity for it to grow and deepen a bit more. Hines also said he connected with offensive assistant coach Scott Vallone on his trip.

Flaherty came to Rutgers this offseason with over two decades of coaching in the NFL. While with the New York Giants as their offensive line coach, he won two Super Bowls.

“(It) has been good,” Hines said. I really enjoy getting to know him better as a coach and as a person.”

As for official visits, Hines said that he will visit West Virginia on June 2, Rutgers on June 9 and then Kentucky on September 16. He hopes to make his commitment in July.

Cardinals land Will Anderson in Bucky Brooks’ final mock draft

Bucky Brooks’ final mock draft looks a lot like early mock drafts with the Cardinals landing a top pass rusher.

The NFL draft begins Thursday and that means final mock drafts are coming out. Will the Arizona Cardinals keep the third overall pick or will they trade it?

NFL Network’s Bucky Brooks predicts they will keep it.

In his final mock draft, they stay at No. 3 overall and selected Alabama pass rusher Will Anderson.

As a polished QB hunter with outstanding tools and technique, Anderson is the disruptive presence the Cardinals need on the edge.

Anderson is certainly a player the Cardinals need and would be productive. Everything about him screams successful player.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Is he Von Miller or Myles Garrett? Perhaps not, but his physical tools, athleticism, effort on the field and his production against the top competition in college make you think he will be an impact pass rusher in the NFL.

The question becomes whether drafting him and adding him to the team is more impactful than one of the players they could get in a trade back and the other players they acquire from the additional draft picks.

Getting Anderson would be a great addition but it kind of feels like a disappointment and perhaps a missed opportunity if they end up just keeping the third overall pick.

Giants select surprising linebacker in latest Draft Wire mock

Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon conducts a “what I would do” mock and has the New York Giants selecting a surprising linebacker at No. 25.

What would you do if you got to make all of the picks in the first round of this week’s NFL draft?

Jeff Risdon of Draft Wire did just that, “based on prospect rating, positional value, team needs in both the short- and long-term, and fit with the coaching staff and style of play.”

For the New York Giants at No. 25, Risdon mocks an unfamiliar name to the Giants — Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Adding in a consummate field general who can start right away and has enough athletic ability to positively impact both run and pass defense seems like a no-brainer for the Giants here. Campbell and Bobby Okereke could be nasty (in a good way) together.

Campbell, who is 6-foot-5 and 249 pounds, was the top-performing linebacker at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine and was the winner of the Butkus, Nagurski-Woodson, and Butkus Fitzgerald awards last year.

The Giants have not met with Campbell, who is projected to be a late first-round or early Day 2 selection. They have met with Johnny Buchanan of Delaware, Auburn’s Derick Hall, Florida’s Ventral Miller, Drew Sanders of Arkansas, and Clemson’s Trenton Simpson.

Of all of the above, Simpson is a first-round talent and the Giants sent a ‘contingent’ of coaches and scouts to his pro day, where he impressed.

The Lions draft trade value chart

The draft trade value chart is useful in trying to figure out trade compensation

How do NFL teams figure out the value in draft trades? They use charts that list the value of each pick and work the deal from there.

For the Detroit Lions, they have a lot of draft capital in 2023 with two first-round picks and two more in the second round. It gives Detroit GM Brad Holmes an abundance of flexibility to move around if he so chooses.

The trade value figures are not firm guidelines. Instead, they are baseline negotiating points to work with in computing a trade. The values here are from the Rich Hill trade chart, which incorporates historical values based on past trades.

Cowboys could find a second round steal at TE in the 2023 draft

If the Cowboys are patient enough to wait until the second round of the 2023 NFL draft they may be able to get a steal at tight end. | From @ReidDHanson

A lot of factors go into making a draft selection for the Cowboys. Best player available (BPA), team need and positional value all must be considered when making a pick. But that’s not all. One factor Dallas frequently considers is the depth of the position and the landscape of the draft. The Cowboys don’t pick in a vacuum. They look at the entire draft and try to predict what awaits them down the road. They may put off an important position if they think attractive options await them later.

They’ve admittedly pounced on needs in the past because they didn’t like the way they were projecting in subsequent rounds, just like they’ve put off certain needs because the depth of the position allowed it. The tight end position could be a position that allows the Cowboys to get premium talent at a slightly less-than-premium price.

What if Michael Mayer or Dalton Kincaid are gone when Dallas goes on the clock at 26? Or what if the Cowboys want to target a different position with their first pick but still desire a game breaker at TE a bit later?

In this ultra-deep TE class, high-end talent could still be found in the second round, potentially allowing Dallas to find a steal with the No. 58 pick.

By most accounts, Mayer and Kincaid are in a league of their own. They are elite prospects who could be All Pros at the next the next level.

Behind them sits a pack of intriguing prospects, some of whom will go early in the second round, but others who have a good chance of falling into the Cowboys’ laps in the second round.

Dolphins WR Braxton Berrios appears to be the team’s first to wear No. 0

Agent 0.

New Miami Dolphins wide receiver Braxton Berrios isn’t a new name to the South Florida area, as he played his college ball for the Miami Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium, the same field he’ll now play his home games on in 2023.

He was originally drafted by the New England Patriots, where he donned the No. 14 before being placed on injured reserve, ending his rookie season. The next four years he spent with the New York Jets, wearing No. 10 – worn by Tyreek Hill in aqua and orange.

Now, that he’s back in Miami, he appears to be changing his number again, as Berrios took to social media to share a jersey edit with the No. 0.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

The NFL recently changed their rules and regulations to allow players to wear the number, and Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Calvin Ridley became the first to make the switch.

Earlier in the offseason, Dolphins safety Jevon Holland had to shut down rumors that he would move to No. 0 for the 2023 season, which would’ve completely thrown off his “Snowman” moniker for his No. 8.

With a new jersey number in a new offense, Berrios has an opportunity to really put himself on the map and help elevate the Dolphins to new heights.

Colts’ 2023 NFL draft big board: Safeties

Here’s a look at our safety big board for the Colts in the 2023 NFL draft.

The Indianapolis Colts are approaching the 2023 NFL draft where they could be looking to add some depth at the safety position.

Though they have some intriguing names already in the room such as Rodney Thomas II, Julian Blackmon and Nick Cross, the Colts could be looking to add some depth and competition to the position on Day 3 of the draft.
