Rutgers football: ESPN analyst Greg McElroy believes Gavin Wimsatt is making progress this spring

Rutgers football is trending upwards according to ESPN’s Greg McElroy.

ESPN analyst Greg McElroy believes that under head coach Greg Schiano, things are trending the right way for Rutgers football. McElroy says this ahead of an important fourth season of the program under Schiano.

A former NFL quarterback who spent two seasons with the New York Jets, McElroy is a highly-regarded and respected college football analyst. He played his college football at Alabama and won a national championship with the Crimson Tide in 2010.

This week during his ‘Always College Football‘ show, McElroy talked Rutgers. As part of his mailbag segment where he takes questions from fans, McElroy fielded one from ‘Kyle.’

The question asked for McElroy to assess the outlook for Rutgers as a rebuilding program and if they can consistently be a bowl team. McElroy touched on how the Big Ten dropping divisions can and will help programs like Rutgers, a point he has made previously on his shows.

“I think that the move and we’ve talked about this as it relates to Wisconsin and we’ve talked about this as it relates to Minnesota, we’ve talked about this as it relates to Penn State, Maryland and others. The move away from divisions in college football, is going to benefit Rutgers greatly,” McElroy said on the show.

“Now can they consistently get to a bowl game? That to me is asking an awful lot given the history of the program. But if there’s one guy that knows how to do it’s Greg Schiano.”

McElroy then took an impressive deep dive into Rutgers, focusing on the offense.

This offseason, the Scarlet Knights shook up the coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball. In came offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca, a veteran Power Five coach. Also brought in were two coaches in [autotag]Dave Brock[/autotag] (wide receivers) and [autotag]Pat Flaherty[/autotag] (offensive line) who have deep NFL experience as positional coaches.[lawrence-related id=26246]

“Now let’s look at this year’s team, specifically, it feels like they’re moving in the right direction with what they want to be offensively. Kirk Ciarrocca is in as the new offensive coordinator and you listen to some of the players’ interviews, you listen to how they speak about Kirk’s Ciarrocca – it seems like things are trending in the right direction with what they’re going to be offensively,” McElroy said.

“Now can they get the most out of Gavin Wimsatt who is looking like a guy that actually resembles that of a Big Ten starting quarterback right now? He’s grown, he appears to be more confident – there seems to be some momentum that’s been created for Gavin Wimsatt. Does he have the supporting cast at wide receiver? That remains a huge question mark.

“I really like Rashad Rochelle. I think he’s got a lot of potential, of course, he has kind of been used and as a personnel weapon – been used at running back and used at wide receiver. There’s things to like about that. But the other wide receivers at this point are a bit of a concern and you lose your top three guys from last year with Sean Ryan, (Aron) Cruickshank and Shameen Jones. Those guys being gone now there’s a lot of catches that are departing the program that now needs to be replenished. So there’s a lot to acknowledge there, like the development of the offensive line. So I’m looking at Rutgers this year as being a team that is still a spoiler, but getting to a bowl game would be a really nice achievement for Greg Schiano here as kind of a breakthrough type of season to show that there is progress being made there in Piscataway.”

Titans exploring trade for No. 3 pick in draft to get QB C.J. Stroud

The Titans are a team to watch if the Houston Texans do not draft Ohio state QB C.J. Stroud.

The Arizona Cardinals have the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft which starts Thursday night. They would like to trade out of the pick, move down and acquire more selections to fill a roster that has many needs.

At least six teams have inquired about moving up and trading with the Cardinals.

One of those teams is the Tennessee Titans, according to KPRC TV’s Aaron Wilson in Houston.

The Titans would be targeting Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud.

The Carolina Panthers are expected to select Alabama quarterback Bryce Young first overall and the Houston Texans, who have the No. 2 overall pick, are the wild card.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Recent rumors and buzz suggest the Texans are not interested in Stroud and are more likely to either go with a pass rusher like Alabama’s Will Anderson or Texas Tech’s Tyree Wilson, or with Kentucky quarterback Will Levis.

If they pass on Stroud, Tennessee is a potential team to make a trade up to No. 3 overall.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill enters the final year of his contract and will turn 35 this year. Tennessee appears to be in a bit of a rebuild mode.

A trade from No. 11 to No. 3 would be costly. The Cardinals would probably be able to get an extra Day 2 pick in this draft, at least one other first-round pick in future years and another future pick.

When the Texans make their selection Thursday night, that’s when the excitement might begin.

Seven, 7-round mock drafts: Cornerback in first leads to epic haul

What happens if the Cowboys take a cornerback in the first round? Our latest mock exercise takes a look at one possible haul. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Cowboys can go a myriad of different directions when they are on the clock Thursday night. With most of their holes filed and a team that’s won 12 games in back-to-back seasons, they have the ability to watch the draft board and pluck players as they fall into their laps. Dallas doesn’t have to move around and ensure they pick a certain position before it’s too late, and that level of freedom has led us to our 777 Project.

We’ve already looked at what happens if the club picks any of four offensive positions, and now it’s time to see what happens if they select a boundary corner.

2023 NFL draft live stream: Time, TV Schedule and how to watch online

The first round starts tonight.

Thursday night offers football fans the first opportunity of the year to see what players from the collegiate game will make the jump to professional level, as the first round of the NFL draft begins.

The Miami Dolphins may not have a first-round selection this year due to tampering with now-retired quarterback Tom Brady and a trade for linebacker Bradley Chubb, but there’s still a chance that general manager Chris Grier makes a move to get back into the first 31 picks.

And, even if they don’t, it’s important for us all to see who’s going where, and which teams are making the biggest splashes.

2023 NFL draft: Colts’ position-by-position preview

Here’s a position-by-position preview for the Colts going into the 2023 NFL draft.

The Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for the 2023 NFL draft, which is slated to begin Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. ET in Kansas City.

Holding the No. 4 overall pick, the Colts hold a pretty crucial selection in the first round. What they do will help set the tone for the remainder of the weekend, and some of that will be determined by the three selections ahead of them.

For this preview, we’ll include the current state of each position room, the level of need and how much money they have invested at the position (courtesy of Spotrac). For the level of need portion, we’ll use a scale of 1-5:

  1. Don’t even think about it: Would be surprised if a pick is used at the position.
  2. Meh: Not a need but if a talented player is available, it wouldn’t be a total shock.
  3. It’s a need but maybe not a priority: Probably set with either a veteran starter but adding talent would be recommended likely with a Day 3 upside pick.
  4. Not top priority, but a big need: Probably should use a Day 2 pick at this position.
  5. Fire in Spongebob’s brain meme: Self-explanatory.

Here’s a quick position-by-position preview for the Colts entering the 2023 NFL draft:

Giants select dynamic DB in final Daniel Jeremiah mock draft

In the final mock draft from NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah, the New York Giants stand pat at No. 25 and land a dynamic defensive back.

Time is up! The 2023 NFL draft is here and that means it’s time for pens to go down.

Final mock drafts are in and there can be no more changes. Now we wait to see who got things right, who got them wrong, and which (if any) wild predictions come true.

For NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah, he envisions a rather predictable start to Round 1. But he also has a few star prospects slipping a bit, which eventually causes a shakeup. It also allows the New York Giants to stand pat and land a dynamic defensive back in Alabama’s Brian Branch.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Branch is one of the more versatile players in this class, and Wink Martindale’s defense is built on having versatile pieces.

The selection of Branch comes with TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnston still on the board.

Jeremiah’s colleague, Lance Zierlein, views Branch as a Minkah Fitzpatrick-type defensive back.

Plug-and-play defensive back with every ingredient necessary to become a high-performing starter early in his career. Branch has primarily handled nickel coverage at Alabama but has the range and instincts for single-high or split safety looks. He’s quick, fast and strong with the ability to match up with shifty slots, bigger possession receivers and pass-catching tight ends. He’s urgent and has a mind for the game. He takes playmaking angles into the throwing lane but does have a tendency to play it a little safe from off-man coverage. There are areas where he can improve but no real weaknesses, which could make him one of the safest picks in the draft.

The Giants may not be in dire need of a safety but the do-it-all Branch would be difficult to pass over. His versatility would allow Wink Martindale to mix and match, constantly keeping the opposing offense on their heels. He could also help improve special teams.
