Bears 2023 offseason preview: Where does Chicago stand at linebacker?

Jack Sanborn burst onto the scene with the Bears linebackers last season, but what will the rest of the group look like in 2023?

The 2023 offseason is officially in full swing, and the Chicago Bears are gearing up for what should be one of the busiest springs in recent memory.

Armed with $98.6 million in cap space, general manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus will have plenty of opportunities to improve the team roster in free agency, while also needing to make key decisions on which players they should let walk.

Here at Bears Wire, we’re going position by position to break down where Chicago stands entering the 2023 offseason. Next up on defense is the linebacker position, which could look a lot different from last season.

Ravens OLB Justin Houston among NFL’s best pass rushers in key category

Ravens outside linebacker Justin Houston tied for third place in one key pass-rushing category according to Next Gen Stats

The Baltimore Ravens need all the pass rush they can get in 2023, and outside linebacker Justin Houston proved to be among the NFL’s best at getting off the line this season. He dipped into the fountain of youth during the 2022 season, and was the team’s most consistent pass rusher despite a slow finish.

In a year where he recorded nine and a half sacks, his average time to cross the line of scrimmage was tied for third-best in the league, which could provide an advantage to Baltimore next year assuming he returns to the team.

Ranking just behind New York Jets defensive lineman Bryce Huff and Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett, Houston tied with Philadelphia Eagles edge rusher Josh Sweat and former Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt at .75 seconds to get across the line in 2022.

For a 33-year-old veteran, this number is remarkable, especially given how opponents schemed against him over the course of the Ravens’ grueling schedule. Time will tell if Houston is able to maintain his elite explosiveness, but if he can, Baltimore should have no problem taking down quarterbacks for sacks next season.

Chargers 2022 season in review: Assessing the play of Los Angeles’ edge defenders/linebackers

The Chargers’ linebacking corps was filled with talent in 2022, but the team faces key decisions at the position in the offseason.

The Los Angeles Chargers were an enigma in 2022, sometimes looking like Super Bowl contenders, and at others, seeming to be remarkably average. The hot-and-cold play of their defense was best shown in their playoff loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, where a great first-half showing was met with utter collapse in the third and fourth quarters, sealing the team’s fate.

Their linebackers, notably superstar pass rusher Joey Bosa, were partially to blame for the loss. Bosa’s bizarre helmet throw incident late in the game gave Jacksonville the opening they needed to complete their improbable comeback, and to some degree, defined his season.

But 10 other linebackers also took snaps for the Chargers in 2022, making contributions big and small to help get them into the playoffs in January. Khalil Mack managed to secure a Pro Bowl selection despite an average season by his standards, and middle linebackers Kenneth Murray and Drue Tranquill made their presence felt consistently from their central spots in Brandon Staley’s defense.

Mack tallied eight sacks on the year, leading the team while Tranquill tied with veteran linebacker Kyle Van Noy for third place with five behind standout defensive lineman Morgan Fox, who had six and a half. Tranquill was also the team’s leading tackler, combining for 146 tackles on the year, which was more than 30 more than Derwin James, who managed 115.

Bosa missed most of the season due to injury but secured two and a half sacks in five contests. Fans will have to wait for next season to see if he can get back to the elite production that characterized his first several seasons in Los Angeles.

The third-year linebacker Murray showed flashes of brilliance on his 76 combined tackles and may see his role grow next year as the Chargers’ defense faces some tough decisions due to salary cap constraints.

Among the others who saw snaps at the position were Chris Rumph, Derek Tuszka, Troy Reeder, Amen Ogbongbemiga, and Nick Niemann, none of whom made more than 20 tackles or two sacks. Though their production was modest by comparison, all proved to be valuable depth for the team and could find themselves in crucial roles in 2023 depending on what they show in OTAs and training camp.

All in all, the linebacking corps was a critical part of Los Angeles’ defensive success in 2022, and there is no doubt that the high-end talent they possess at the position made a huge impact for them all season. Now, the team will need to make decisions over the coming months that will determine whether they can afford to keep their stars around, or if they will opt to test their depth and rely on some unsung heroes to man the position in 2023.

Chargers’ 2022 season in review: Assessing the play of Los Angeles’ defensive line

The Chargers were led by unsung hero Morgan Fox on their defensive line in 2022.

The Los Angeles Chargers pass rush has been one of their most useful strategic advantages on defense, and has the power and speed to overwhelm most offensive lines across the NFL.

But that strength is mostly bolstered by their elite edge defender corps, which hosts perennial Pro Bowlers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack. Their defensive line was comprised of 11 players who took snaps for the Chargers over the course of the 2022 season and accounted for just 11.5 sacks on the year.

Sixth-year lineman Morgan Fox accounted for six and a half of those sacks, leading the unit by a wide margin. Tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day notched two sacks on the season but led the team in combined tackles with 56 on the season, besting Fox by 18 in that category.

Among other key contributors up front for Los Angeles were Breiden Fehoko, Austin Johnson, Christian Covington, and Otito Ogbonnia, who combined for 71 total tackles but just one sack in the team’s 2022 campaign.

Tyeler Davison, Christopher Hinton, David Moa, and Joe Gaziano rounded out the Chargers’ depth on the line, but didn’t see much action as none in this group registered more than one sack or 10 total tackles.

Clearly, there remains a ton of room for improvement for the Los Angeles in this area, though they may find it difficult to upgrade their defensive line given the current state of their salary cap. Watch for the Chargers to look for a lineman in April’s draft, and for them to do their best to improve this group’s production in 2023.

Ravens 2022 season-in-review: Linebackers

We analyze the Ravens linebackers during the 2022 season

The Baltimore Ravens have been known for having some legendary linebacker groups over the course of their history, and seem to have assembled another phenomenal unit at the position heading into 2023. Rookie pass rusher David Ojabo came on strong in his end-of-season debut, and with playmakers at every spot in the second level of their defense, Baltimore’s future at linebacker is bright.

Veteran Patrick Queen led all Ravens defenders with 117 combined tackles on the season, and newly acquired stud Roquan Smith managed to bring down opposing ballcarriers 86 times in nine games played in Baltimore. Smith’s contributions are of particular note, as his combined effort in time spent with the Chicago Bears before being traded to the Ravens put him one tackle shy of 170 on the season, a pace of nearly 10 tackles per game.

Outside linebacker Justin Houston led the Ravens in sacks with nine and a half on the year, which cemented his role as Baltimore’s best threat in the pass rush. Behind Houston, Queen managed to secure five sacks, while others at the position like Jason Pierre-Paul and Odafe Oweh topped out at three. Tyus Bowser also contributed after coming back from a torn achilles injury.

While the top-end production of Baltimore’s linebackers was a much-needed boost to their defensive output in 2022, their depth players didn’t see much action, making a minimal impact for the team. Players such as A.J. Klein, Del’Shawn Phillips, Steven Means, and Devon Kennard either had their seasons cut short due to injury or were let go in some shape.

Ahead of the 2023 season, Baltimore shouldn’t feel much of a necessity to invest in the linebacker position in free agency or the draft, and should instead focus on shoring up other parts of their roster. Assuming that Queen, Smith, Houston, and Ojabo are fully healthy next season, fans should expect another standout performance from the Ravens’ linebacking corps as they seek to make a run at next year’s Super Bowl, both inside and outside.

Notre Dame commitment named nation’s top high school linebacker

Notre Dame is getting one of the best.

We’ve known for a while that Notre Dame is getting a good one in 2023 recruiting commitment [autotag]Drayk Bowen[/autotag].  Bowen has been fun to follow since committing to Notre Dame over a year ago and playing his high school football not even an hour west of South Bend.

Often times we highlighted Bowen’s incredible performances in the backfield at Andrean (Merrillville, Ind.) High School, but he’ll be joining Notre Dame to play linebacker.  Just how good is he at that?

Bowen was named the high school recipient of the 2022 Butkus Award on Tuesday.  The award goes to the nation’s top linebacker at the high school, college, and professional levels annually.

The Butkus selection committee said of the future Domer:

“Drayk Bowen is an explosive, drive-thru striker with knockback lower-body power and outstanding block destruction. He displayed exceptional instincts hitting holes as a linebacker and running back and erases angles in the open field. He’s an exceptional leader and excels equally as well in the classroom and community. In a class filled with many exceptional linebackers, he stood out as the best of the best.”

Prince Kollie also won the high school award in 2020 before signing his national letter of intent with Notre Dame.  [autotag]Manti Te’o[/autotag] (2012), [autotag]Jaylon Smith[/autotag] (2015), and [autotag]Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah[/autotag] (2020) all won the collegiate award while wearing blue and gold.

Linebackers coach Miles Smith on improving run defense ahead of matchup vs. Browns

Smith laid out his plan to help the #Texans contain the #Browns’ dangerous rushing attack

The Houston Texans are in dire straits heading into their Week 13 matchup against the Cleveland Browns. Their record sits at a paltry 1-9-1 and facing their former quarterback on Sunday, they may be primed to take their tenth loss of the season in the worst way possible.

The team will face a two-headed monster in the Browns’ offense, as they possess the ability to run and pass the ball effectively with the high-end talent they host on that side of the ball. Houston’s linebackers coach addressed how his team might stop the run in a press conference this week, and told reporters that his squad’s success will come down to how well they can execute fundamentals.

“I think it kind of goes to what were we doing wrong earlier in the season,” Smith explained. “On every play, everyone has a job. There’s 11 guys on the field. There’s 11 gaps. It only takes one crack in the armor for something to split. Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve been preventing some of those explosive plays. Just having guys running to the ball, a little bit more fundamentally sound is what we’ve been doing.

“As we continue to go, every walkthrough we have, every practice we have, we’re harping on all 11 guys being exactly where they’re supposed to be. Over the past couple of weeks, run-wise, we’ve been doing that. We have to get everybody playing the pass better as well so we can have a better overall defensive effort. Run-wise, that’s what the difference has been.”

It would be a major upset if the Texans manage to sneak out of Week 13 with a win, but if Smith can coach his linebackers up well enough to contain Nick Chubb and the Cleveland running game, Houston just might have a fighting chance to get the job done.

Linebackers coach Miles Smith compares Blake Cashman to Christian Harris

Smith told reporters that Cashman’s game compares favorably to that of #Texans’ rookie linebacker Christian Harris

Just six weeks separate the Houston Texans from the sweet release of the end of the season after what seems like a lifetime of disappointment that was packed into a few months. The team has struggled mightily in 2022, and despite all the adversity they’ve faced, Houston’s linebackers coach Miles Smith is excited to find new ways for players under his watch to succeed in their last remaining opportunities of the year.

In his comments to the media on Thursday, he addressed what he has seen from one contributor in particular, fourth-year linebacker Blake Cashman. The budding playmaker just re-signed with the team earlier in the week, and Smith made it clear that he likes what he has seen from him in the Texans’ latest campaign.

“He’s a little bit like Christian Harris in that he’s an elite athlete,” Smith told reporters. “He’s able to run down plays. He’s been playing a little more third down for us, rushing a little bit more than some other linebackers are doing. Just his outward athleticism, you need to find way to get players like that on the field. As we continue to go, we’re going to do that more and more.”

Cashman came into the league as a fifth-round selection by the Jets in 2019 and has developed into a steady figure on the Texans’ defense since joining the team earlier this season. He has flown under the radar of the national media and casual fans who haven’t been following Houston this year but is considered to be a lynchpin in the team’s defense and a key part of their roadmap to rebuild in 2023.

With strong showings to end the season, Cashman could prove to be one of the more consistent pieces on the Texans’ roster who could turn into a bonafide star in the years to come.

Notre Dame loses captain for remainder of year

Not the news Notre Dame fans were hoping for on Thursday

Notre Dame’s defense will be playing a man down the rest of the season after Bo Bauer suffered a knee injury at practice Tuesday.

Marcus Freeman met the media for his regular Thursday availability and shared the unfortunate news.

“Sustained a knee injury in practice on Tuesday, which is devastating just because he’s a captain and he provides so much more than just production.”

When asked about how the injury impacts Notre Dame for the rest of 2022, Freeman shared that Bauer’s loss isn’t just about him making tackles himself.

“Just the energy, the ability to motivate our players, it’ll be a tremendous loss for us.”

A 2018 recruit from Pennsylvania, Bauer  Bo Bauer recorded 120 tackles, 2.5 sacks, two interceptions, and 6.5 pass breakups during his time at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame (3-2) will be without their graduate linebacker and captain the rest of the way.
