Colts officially sign DE Levi Bell and waived OL Lewis Kidd

In need of DE depth, the Colts announced that they signed Levi Bell and waived OL Lewis Kidd to make room on the roster.

The Colts announced on Wednesday that they signed defensive end Levi Bell and waived offensive lineman Lewis Kidd.

With Samson Ebukam suffering a season-ending Achilles injury, Titus Leo being carted off during Tuesday’s practice with what Shane Steichen called a knee injury–we still do not know the extent of the injury–and Dayo Odeyingbo sidelined the last two practices with a calf injury, the Colts were in need of some defensive end depth.

The 6-1 – 275 pound Bell is an excellent athlete, posting an elite RAS of 9.55 and went undrafted in 2023 out of Texas State. In his final season, he recorded 41 pressures, six sacks, and was versatile, playing multiple positions along the defensive front, and even took some snaps on offense at fullback, according to PFF.

Following the 2023 draft, Bell originally signed with Baltimore but was released and signed by Seattle, where he appeared in all three preseason games last summer. This spring, he played in the UFL with the Michigan Panthers.

Making the roster will be an uphill battle for Bell. More than likely, he provides needed depth at defensive end for training camp and will try to earn a spot on the practice squad.

To make room for Bell on the roster, the Colts waived Kidd. After being released by New Orleans during roster cutdowns last summer, Kidd was signed to the Colts’ practice squad, where he spent most of the season.

He did not see any snaps in 2023 and was released in mid-December. The Colts then signed him to a futures deal this past January.

Kidd has played 78 snaps in his career, all of which came in 2022 with the Saints as the left guard. With the additions of Tanor Bortolini and Matt Goncalves in the draft, along with returning all five starters, the Colts’ offensive line room has gotten fairly crowded.

Veterans and rookies for the Indianapolis Colts will report for training camp on July 24th, with the first practice taking place on July 25th.

Between now and then I will be previewing the Colts’ 91-man roster with a look back at each player’s 2023 season, along with what’s ahead for 2024.

I’ll be going through the Colts’ roster alphabetically, so up next is offensive lineman Lewis Kidd. To stay up to date with our other previews, be sure to head over to Colts Wire.

2023 Season Review

After being released by the New Orleans Saints during roster cutdowns last summer, Kidd was signed to the Colts’ practice squad in mid-September. Kidd did not see any snaps last season and was released on December 19th. The Colts then signed him to a futures contract for the 2024 season in January.

Kidd went undrafted in 2022 and spent that first season with the Saints. He played 78 offensive snaps with 62 of them coming at left guard and 14 as an in-line tight end when the Saints went with a heavy personnel package. Kidd allowed on sack and three pressures, according to PFF.

2024 Season Preview

The additions of Matt Goncalves and Tanor Bortolini in the draft made making the roster for those on the back end of the depth chart even more challenging, especially when you consider the versatility that each player has, with Bortolini able to play all three interior positions and the Colts believing Goncalves can play guard in addition to tackle.

Realistically, there is only one or maybe two roster spots available with all five starters on the offensive line from last season returning, Bortolini, Goncalves, and Blake Freeland accounting for eight roster spots.

Competing with Kidd will be Wesley French, Josh Sills, Danny Pinter, and Jake Witt, among others. Versatility will be an important factor when it comes to determining who earns that final roster spot or two.

“You’re dressing 48 guys, eight linemen. If you draft an offensive lineman, to just play one position, unless you’re the starter makes it very difficult,” said GM Chris Ballard about the offensive line. “You need to have a guy that can play both tackle spots, a guy that can play both guard spots and swing. And really, two more guys that can snap the football.

“I think it’s the same thing in any position – you’ve got to have some versatility to be able to play multiple spots. We kind of try to do that as much as we can every year.”

Colts sign 3 more to future contracts

The Colts signed three more to future contracts.

The Indianapolis Colts signed three more players to Reserve/Future contracts, the team announced Tuesday.

After signing nine players to future contracts and four more to one-year extensions Monday, the Colts signed safety Kendell Brooks, guard Lewis Kidd and safety Michael Tutsie to future contracts.

Kidd spent most of the season on the practice squad when he was signed in September but was released from the practice squad in December.

Tutsie signed with the Colts this offseason as an undrafted rookie free agent in June and was active in training camp before suffering an injury that led to him being waived-injured in August. He was waived with an injury settlement the following week.

Brooks, a Michigan State product, spent the 2023 offseason with the Arizona Cardinals after signing with them as an undrafted rookie free agent. He was released before the start of the regular season.

The Colts can sign as many future contracts as they please as long as the offseason roster does not exceed the 90-player limit, which does not go into effect until the start of the new league, which is set for March 13.

Colts make several roster moves after suspending two players

The Colts made some roster moves after suspending two players.

The Indianapolis Colts made several roster moves Tuesday after announcing self-imposed suspensions of cornerback Tony Brown and wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie, the team announced Tuesday.

It isn’t clear what led to the suspensions, which were listed due to conduct detrimental to the team. Both Brown and McKenzie were healthy scratches for the Week 15 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers so there is likely a connection.

The Colts announced more roster moves after the suspensions Tuesday, including one player being added to the active roster.

Colts sign former Saints backup OL Lewis Kidd to their practice squad

Colts sign former Saints backup OL Lewis Kidd to their practice squad

Another former New Orleans Saints player has landed on his feet: the Indianapolis Colts announced Thursday that they signed Lewis Kidd to their practice squad after the Saints let him go during final roster cuts in August.

Kidd first signed with the Saints last year out of Montana State, and he was the only undrafted free agent to make their initial 53-man roster. He hung around on the depth chart as a backup at left guard, but the Saints moved him back to his college position at left tackle this summer. The Colts are listing him at guard, at least at first.

Good luck to him. Saints fans have harangued the team for its poor offensive line play in Week 1, but the team must feel like they’re in a better spot than last season with guys who made the team on other rosters like Kidd and Calvin Throckmorton (with the Carolina Panthers). There’s a chance Kidd could play against his former team when the Saints visit the Colts in Week 8.

Colts sign G Lewis Kidd to the practice squad

The Colts made another practice squad move Thursday.

The Indianapolis Colts signed guard Lewis Kidd to the practice squad and placed center Jack Anderson on the practice squad injured list, the team announced Thursday.

Kidd was an undrafted free agent out of Montana State following the 2022 NFL draft. He spent the 2022 season with the New Orleans Saints, appearing in 13 games and making one start.

Anderson was signed to the practice squad this week but dealt with a calf injury that landed him on the injured reserve list this preseason while he was with the New York Giants.

Colts worked out six players, including 3 RBs

The Colts worked out six players, including three RBs Monday.

The Indianapolis Colts worked out six players, including three running backs, according to the league’s transaction wire Monday.

With Jonathan Taylor missing at least the first four games of the season and Zack Moss’ status up in the air for the regular-season opener, the Colts are doing their research on available running backs.

Along with the trio of backs, the Colts also held tryouts for three offensive linemen.

Here are the six players the Colts worked out Monday:

Saints waive second year OT Lewis Kidd, who is a candidate to return to the practice squad

The New Orleans Saints have waived second-year offensive tackle Lewis Kidd, who could return to the practice squad | @ClutchWDN

The New Orleans Saints continue their momentum toward reaching the 53-man roster. This time they have waived second-year offensive lineman Lewis Kidd, per Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football. Kidd was a member of the 53-man roster last season as offensive line depth, playing in 13 games and even starting one due to injuries. He primarily lined up at guard last season.

Kidd will be eligible to return to the Saints practice squad pending that he clears waivers. Considering his status on last year’s roster, if he were to clear waivers he would be an obvious candidate to be added.

Lewis did struggle in preseason this year, however, playing in all three games and accruing 178 total snaps at left tackle. He allowed 10 pressures, a sack, and had three penalties in that span of time. With the Saints having previous injuries along the offensive line in the past two seasons, having Kidd on the practice squad would be beneficial without a doubt.

Updated Saints depth chart at guard after re-signing Calvin Throckmorton

We’re updating the New Orleans Saints depth chart at guard after Calvin Throckmorton re-signed for 2023. Where he fits in the lineup this season:

The New Orleans Saints brought back offensive guard Calvin Throckmorton on a one-year deal for the 2023 season, which is a good move for their depth along the offensive line. But how does this change their depth chart at the position? Starting guards Andrus Peat and Cesar Ruiz are both under contract for 2023, and Throckmorton is just one of several backups in the mix (with a few new players joining up early this offseason), along with some players retained from last year’s practice squad.

So how do they all stack up? Here is the 2023 salary cap hit and 2022 snap counts for each of the guards currently signed on with New Orleans:
