Lewis Cine closes it out! Georgia extends the program record for first round picks with 5

Georgia safety Lewis Cine has been selected as the No. 32 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings, the last pick of the first round.

That extends the UGA record for picks in the first round with five.

Cine was the unquestioned leader of the Bulldogs secondary that squashed opponents as one of the best defensive units in the country.

In 2021, the Texas native racked up a team-leading 73 stops, team-high nine pass breakups and won the Defensive MVP of the national title game.

Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Christopher Smith stepped up into the starting safety role last season after Richard LeCounte was involved in an accident following the Kentucky game. Smith finished the 2020 season with 26 tackles and a pass deflection.

Smith came to Athens as a four-star recruit and has played in every game during the last two seasons.

This upcoming season is presumed to be Christopher Smith’s most important year in Athens. He’s expected to start at safety alongside Lewis Cine. Georgia has a thin defensive backfield, so it’s key that both starting safeties stay healthy next season.

Additionally, Christopher Smith will look to force more turnovers. Someone will need to step up to replace Richard LeCounte’s production. LeCounte averaged four combined interceptions and forced fumbles per season as a starter.

Before coming to Georgia, Christopher Smith helped Hapeville Charter win a GHSA state title in 2017. Smith and fellow University of Georgia defensive back William Poole were teammates at Hapeville Charter.

Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Lewis Cine is expected to start at safety opposite Richard LeCounte in 2020.

Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Lewis Cine had the difficult task of guarding LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the SEC Championship Game. Cine flashed his versatility in containing the Kansas City Chiefs first round pick.

Now, Cine is anticipated to start at safety opposite Richard LeCounte. Cine has the versatility to play nickel defensive back as well, but he’s needed to replace JR Reed at starting safety.

Cine finished last season with 20 tackles. he played in every game and started the final two contests. He recorded six tackles in both of his starts (against LSU and Baylor). Cine, who enrolled early, broke out immediately in the G-Day game last season. His freshman season was excellent, but Dawg fans can expect more in 2020.
