Seahawks DC Clint Hurtt comments on Leonard Williams’ unique length

The Seattle Seahawks made a big move before the trade deadline, acquiring New York Giants defensive lineman Leonard Williams. Seattle needed to bolster their interior defensive line, and they did so in a big way with Williams.

Literally.

Williams is an absolute mammoth of a human being who has made quite the career of doing the dirty work in the trenches. He eats up blocks so other defenders can thrive, and he’s able to do so with his freakish size. Something his new defensive coordinator commented on recently:

The Seahawks will absolutely need Williams’ size and ability to defend the run tomorrow in Baltimore. The Ravens are lead the NFL with 24-straight games rushing for at least 100 yards. Slowing down Baltimore’s ground game will be paramount.

Quite the first assignment for Williams.

Why Leonard Williams could put the Seahawks over the top in the NFC

Pete Carroll hopes Leonard Williams maxes out in Seattle.

Former USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams is heading back to the West Coast after being traded by the New York Giants to the Seattle Seahawks this .

As Seahawks Wire reports, “Seattle cut a deal with the New York Giants to acquire defensive lineman Leonard Williams. All it cost the Seahawks was a 2nd round pick in 2024, and a 5th round pick in 2025. The Giants will still be on the hook for most of his salary in exchange for better draft capital.”

Williams was a star at USC, earning first-team All-Pac-12 and first-team All-America honors twice. Upon his arrival in the NFL, Williams finished third in the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting and cracked the 2016 Pro Bowl roster in his second pro season.

Williams has 39.5 career sacks across 132 total starts. He also has 59 tackles for loss, 162 QB hurries, 10 pass deflections, 6 forced fumbles and 470 combined tackles.

“We’ve watched him for a long time,” Seahawk coach Pete Carroll said. “He brings a lot of versatility … He’s the kind of guy that can make a difference in games.”

Pairing Williams on the defensive line with nose tackle Jarran Reed and end Dre’Mont Jones will create rushing lanes for multiple guys to get to the quarterback. The Seahawks will be able to eat in the run-stuffing phase of defense.

The Seattle Seahawks are a huge threat if they stay healthy to win the NFC. They can go toe to toe with the 49ers, Cowboys, Lions, and Eagles.

Bobby Wagner on the message Seahawks send by adding Leonard Williams

Let’s hear what the team’s defensive captain has to say about it.

Analysts agree: trading for Leonard Williams should make the Seahawks defense better exactly where it needed the most improvement. Let’s hear what the team’s defensive captain has to say about it, though.

Here’s Bobby Wagner on the trade when he spoke with beat reporters on Wednesday.

Giants’ Dexter Lawrence shares his goodbye message to Leonard Williams

New York Giants NT Dexter Lawrence told his good friend, Leonard Williams, to go out and shine with the Seattle Seahawks.

The New York Giants traded veteran defensive lineman Leonard Williams to the Seattle Seahawks this week for a pair of draft picks.

Williams had played his entire eight-and-a-half-year NFL career in New Jersey, the first four with the Jets and the last four with the Giants. Translation: he’s seen a lot of losing and is now headed to a winner.

Williams will be missed for sure. Teammate Dexter Lawrence spoke about his friend’s departure.

“He’s a great football player and going to be hard to replace,” Lawrence said on Wednesday. “I was happy for him. He didn’t have to say much. I already know how he feels. I was just happy for him, told him to go out there and shine and we’ll hold it down.”

Lawrence has been doing a great job of holding things down. He’s on an All-Pro trajectory this season. Last week against the Jets, Lawrence was a one-man gang.

Lawrence is playing it week by week and simply going out and doing what the Giants hoped he could do when they selected him 17th overall out of Clemson back in 2019.

“Each week I want to dominate and that’s what I’m going to do each week. And that’s my goal, is to dominate. I enjoy pressure and I like pressure, whatever this brings, it brings, and I am just going to keep being me,” he said.

Williams had a huge effect on Lawrence both on and off the field. Asked what he learned the most from Williams, Lawrence kept it simple.

“Just how to be yourself. Don’t get overwhelmed in moments and just stay true and cool to yourself,” he said.

It’s working.

Leonard Williams praises Giants for the way trade was handled

Seattle Seahawks DL Leonard Williams had nothing but good things to say about the New York Giants and how they handled his trade.

On Monday, the New York Giants made a big splash when they traded defensive lineman Leonard Williams to the Seattle Seahawks.

The Giants got back great value in return for the veteran and at 2-6, the move was met with a lot of praise for general manager Joe Schoen.

Still, there is no denying that the loss of Williams will leave a void for the Giants, both on and off the field.

“Love Leo. A lot of respect for Leo. I’d say that Seattle called Joe (Schoen) and Joe told me about it. Joe had a private meeting with Leo, those guys talked about it, good conversation and decided that’s what we were going to do kind of on both ends,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters on Wednesday.

“A lot of respect for Leo, certainly we’ll miss him but have confidence in the guys — A’Shawn Robinson and (Rakeem Nuñez-Roches) Nacho and those guys that we have that are playing his spot.”

While being introduced in Seattle, Williams praised the Giants for how the trade was handled.

“I think the way it was proposed to me through my GM and with my agents was a respectful way,” Williams said. “I’ve been traded before and it was very abruptly; I kind of had no say. In this situation, my GM came to me, and he wasn’t shopping me around, but out of respect for me and where I’m at in my career being a little older, he pretty much let me know that a few teams — including Seattle — that were on the winning side of the season and going to make a push this year.

“He was like, ‘I know you have a connection with a lot of those guys over there.’ He was pretty much letting me know, ‘Before four o’clock today, talk with your agents.’ The way it happened felt a little more negotiated and I think it went well.”

After being shocked by the trade from the New York Jets to the New York Giants back in 2019, The Big Cat clearly appreciated the way the Giants handled Monday’s trade.

Dexter Lawrence, who made for an elite interior defensive line in his time playing with Williams, praised his former teammate, saying, “You cannot replace Leonard.”

“I don’t want to hear the things about how do we replace Leonard? You can’t replace Leonard, he’s only one of one. So, the next guys got to step up and do their job,” Lawrence said, via Newsday.

The trade made too much sense for both the Giants and Williams given his age and desire to win at this point in his career.

The Seahawks are getting a good one in Williams. The words from head coach Brian Daboll and Williams’ former Giants teammates this week certainly reflect the type of player Williams was both on the field and in the Giants’ locker room.

Giants vs. Raiders: 5 things to know about Week 9

The New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders square off on Sunday afternoon in Week 9, so here are five things fans should know.

The New York Giants (2-5) head west to face the Las Vegas Raiders (3-5) at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada on Sunday, November 5. Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET to be aired on FOX (Ch. 5 in New York).

Here are five things to know ahead of Sunday’s Week 9 matchup.

Seahawks were ‘pretty deep’ in talks for Patriots edge before Leonard Williams deal

According to a report by Albert Breer at Sports Illustrated, the team engaged in trade talks on several different edge rushers first, including Josh Uche of the Patriots.

The Seahawks finally landed a difference-maker for their defensive line, a feat they’d been attempting to accomplish since last season ended. Their trade for Giants defensive lineman Leonard Williams gives their roster a serious boost where it was most needed and should help them close the gap with the other NFC contenders – specifically the Eagles, who have more star DL than anyone should know what to do with.

Seattle considered other options too, though. According to a report by Albert Breer at Sports Illustrated, the team engaged in trade talks on several different edge rushers first, including Josh Uche of the Patriots.

“The Seahawks really did look at a lot of different options before trading for Giants defensive lineman Leonard Williams, who’s a big, reliable, disruptive piece for their defensive front. And much of their efforts had been focused on edge-rushers, with talks going pretty deep on players like New England’s Josh Uche…”

Something to file away in case Uche becomes available in the future. For now, the Seahawks should be considered one of the big winners coming out of the trade deadline. A win over the Ravens this week would prove they are fully ready to make a Super Bowl run.

How the Giants can replace DL Leonard Williams

The New York Giants need to replace Leonard Williams after trading him away on Monday and they have several in-house options.

The New York Giants traded veteran defensive lineman Leonard Williams to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday in a move that was somewhat expected given Williams’ contract status.

The Giants didn’t get much cap relief as a result of the trade. In fact, they got very little. It is estimated they will only clear $647K of cap space by moving Williams.

They did, however, get a 2024 second-round and 2025 fifth-rounder in the process, so the trade appears worth it. They’re going nowhere this year and Williams is not in their long-term plans. This was a good deal for the Giants.

Who will replace Williams in the defensive line rotation is now the remaining question.

Dexter Lawrence has played 72 percent of the defense snaps followed by Williams at 70 percent, Rakeem Nunez-Roches (34 percent), and A’Shawn Robinson (33 percent).

D.J. Davidson has played 15 percent and rookie Jordon Riley only four percent. Riley has been a healthy scratch most of the season, only dressing for two games. He’s highly regarded by the team and this could be his big break.

It would make sense that Nacho (Nunez-Roches) and Robinson get a small bump in snaps but the real solution will likely come from the Oregon two — Davidson and Riley.

The Giants also have Ryder Anderson on the practice squad. Anderson was a final cut in trying camp this summer.
