Lauren Holiday says Jrue Holiday awoke from a nap to learn he was traded without warning

Jrue Holiday deserved better than this from the Bucks.

After spending several years with the organization, Jrue Holiday was traded so that the Milwaukee Bucks could acquire Damian Lillard.

Holiday, who was later re-routed from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Boston Celtics in another deal, recently told reporters that he intended to eventually retire as a member of the Bucks.

Lauren Holiday, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and former U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year married to the former NBA champion, shared that the trade was a surprise.

She posted on Instagram that Jrue was taking a nap and when he woke up, he discovered that he had played his last game for Milwaukee.

It is fairly surprising that Holiday was apparently not given a heads-up that the trade might even possibly happen, especially as it got closer to the one-yard line.

Lauren’s perspective, however, is a helpful reminder for fans that players are people too — and that their entire lives can change within just a moment.

“I’m not sharing this to say we are entitled to anything. I’m sharing this to say we are human beings whose kids develop friendships with other kids in our community, we are people who value family and friendship and invest in the cities we play in. We don’t just take from the ity we play in, we give to the city we play in and we give our all.”

She added that while they’re not offended by what happened, their family is “grieving the loss” of Milwaukee while also “celebrating the hope and joy” of Boston.

For Jrue Holiday, simply writing a large check and walking away was not enough, he told Cheddar. He and his wife, retired soccer star Lauren Holiday, are working with Resilia — a technology platform that monitors and allocates resources for nonprofits and foundations — to track the progress of their donations. The couple wants to be sure their efforts are leading to real change so they are working closely with Sevetri Wilson, founder and CEO of Resilia. “Honestly, it’s a lot of research,” Holiday said. “For us to hook up with Sevetri and for her to have so much knowledge on this issue and hands on the ground in so many places, it’s been big for what me and my wife want to do.”

In addition to his efforts off the court, Holiday is also an advocate for his “sisters” in the WNBA. Women in the league have long been fighting for equality, particularly regarding salary. “We want to give women in general, but especially little girls, that same ability to go out there and make money and to have that popularity that they have the same as guys, ” Holiday told Cheddar. “Not only do we support Black Lives Matter, but we support women’s sports the most in this family.”

While a large check could quickly solve many issues, problems like the need for deep systemic change take time. “We’re looking at a three-year timeline,” she said of the Holidays’ plans.”The organizations, as well as small businesses who are applying now, they should rest assured that this won’t be the last time that we’re giving out funding and that they’ll hear from Jrue and Lauren because this is an ongoing process.”

Jrue Holiday to donate game checks totaling $5.3 million to charity

Jrue Holiday announced on Wednesday that he would be donating the rest of his game checks to start a foundation alongside wife Lauren.

Jrue and wife Lauren Holiday made a big announcement on Wednesday as the former will be donating the remainder of his game checks this season to charity. Jrue appeared on ESPN’s The Jump to make the formal announcement but spoke with ESPN’s Andrew Lopez as well on the matter.

The $5.3 million Holiday will be donating will go toward starting the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Justice Impact Fund, described in the ESPN piece with a focus “to aid communities in New Orleans, Indianapolis and the Los Angeles area.” Jrue is a native of Los Angeles and has played most of his career in New Orleans. Both of his brothers, Justin and Aaron, play in Indianapolis for the Pacers.

Here are Holiday’s quotes to Lopez on starting the foundation:

“Honestly when it came down to it, it was me and my wife talking about what we could do to kind of further this movement and progression and being able to help out our community and just being able to help.

“We were just kind of sitting in the house, in the bed, thinking about it, and my wife said, ‘I think you should do this and you should do the rest of your salary.’ That’s a great idea. Because we want to make an impact. God has blessed us with so much. We know a couple of things that are important are time and money, and right now, we have both. To be able to give away our money to help further this movement and Black-owned businesses that have taken a hit in COVID-19, to us, it felt like the perfect time and opportunity.”

Lauren recently penned a piece for The Player’s Tribune detailing a case of racism experienced by both her and Jrue. Lopez also broke down some of the details of where the money will go in regards to the foundation. Up to $1.5 million will be designated to bring about equitable outcomes for Black and Brown communities in New Orleans, Los Angeles and Compton while $1 million will be allotted to Indianapolis. An additional $1 million will go to Black-owned businesses in cities across the country and $500,000 will go to institutions of higher learning, including historically Black colleges and universities.

While his commitment hasn’t come in a financial aspect, Lonzo Ball has also taken a step forward in supporting similar causes, notably being a member of the Social Justice Leadership Coalition.

Since the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others sparked protests around the country, the Holidays have been trying to figure out what they could do to help. They wanted to attend protests but didn’t because of Lauren’s pregnancy. “With everything going on in this world, it made me and my wife realize that we aren’t invested in our community as we feel we should be,” Jrue Holiday said. “This is one of those times to really, even though it’s kind of a kick in the pants, you kind of feel like I should’ve known this or I should’ve been doing this before. But you’re never too late. This is our time to contribute.”
