Seahawks sign Laquon Treadwell to practice squad, release WR

According to a report by Jeremy Fowler at ESPN, the Seahawks are signing free agent wide receiver Laquon Treadwell to their practice squad.

According to a report by Jeremy Fowler at ESPN, the Seahawks are signing free agent wide receiver Laquon Treadwell to their practice squad.

Treadwell (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) was a former first-round pick by the Vikings in 2016. As a rookie, Treadwell saw just three targets and he never really caught on in Minnesota. After only scoring three touchdowns in four seasons the Vikings let his rookie contract expire. He signed with the Falcons in 2020 and appeared in five games with them that year. He spent last season with the Jaguars, posting a career-high 434 receiving yards in 12 games, but still only managed to score one touchdown.

Just before the 2022 season began Jacksonville released Treadwell. He spent about a month on the Patriots’ practice squad earlier this year, followed by a couple of weeks on the Cardinals’ practice squad.

All together, Treadwell has played in 70 career NFL games, totaling 104 catches, 1,184 yards and five touchdowns.

WR Laquon Treadwell one of four practice players of the week for Patriots

The Patriots’ practice players of the week have been revealed

Former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Laquon Treadwell is making himself at home with the New England Patriots. Per ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the former first-round draft pick was practicing in a black jersey on Wednesday, which indicates he’s one of the team’s practice players of the week.

Treadwell was actually coming off a career-season with the Jaguars before signing to the Patriots’ practice squad in early September. He hauled in 33 receptions for 434 yards and one touchdown in a one-and-done year in Jacksonville.

It’s a good sign to see that he clearly hit the ground running when arriving in New England.

Tight end Matt Sokol, offensive tackle Marcus Cannon and defensive tackle Sam Roberts were also wearing the honorary black jerseys at practice.

Roberts flashed throughout the preseason and even did a fun interview with Patriots Wire’s Cam Garrity heading into the season.

Meanwhile, Cannon has a long history with the team as a three-time Super Bowl champion. He was signed to the practice squad following the Patriots’ season-opening loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Sokol, on the other hand, has an uphill battle with Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith on the main roster. It could take an injury for him to receive the call up to play in games, but the black jersey on his back says he’s prepared to do exactly that if given an opportunity.

Patriots signing former first-round draft pick to practice squad

The Patriots are adding to their receivers room.

The New England Patriots are reportedly adding to their receivers room by signing former first-round draft pick Laquon Treadwell to their practice squad.

ESPN’s Field Yates reported the news on Monday.

Treadwell, who was selected with the No. 23 overall pick of the 2016 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings, has now bounced around at four different locations. He never quite lived up to his draft stock, but he did prove himself to be more serviceable than expected during an impressive 2021 campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season.

When catching passes from Trevor Lawrence, he hauled in 33 receptions for a career-high 434 receiving yards and one touchdown. He was actually the third-leading receiver in his first year with the team behind Marvin Jones and Laviska Shenault Jr.

The Patriots can use all of the help they can get with their receivers room once again facing question marks. Coach Bill Belichick spent a second-round draft pick on rookie Tyquan Thornton, who is currently out with a collarbone injury. He also went out and traded for DeVante Parker with the Miami Dolphins.

So there’s obviously ongoing work behind the scenes to fix the problem. We’ll see if Treadwell can build off his improved effort last season when catching passes from Mac Jones.

With the practice squad already full, another move must be coming for the Patriots.

Another player could be cut from the practice squad to make room for Treadwell, or there’s also the possibility that one of the practice squad players will be bumped to the opening spot on the 53-man roster left after Thornton was placed on injured reserve.

Jaguars continue cutting down roster on offense, releasing WR Laquon Treadwell

Treadwell will be free to find a contract elsewhere after the #Jaguars parted ways with him on Monday morning.

Once one of the most promising young receivers in the NFL, Laquon Treadwell saw his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars come to an abrupt halt today as reports surfaced that the team parted ways with him this morning. After a preseason spent with the second and third units of the Jaguars’ offense, Treadwell saw moderate success against backup defenses, but the coaching staff clearly didn’t see his upside against starting units.

Treadwell was a first-round pick back in 2016 by way of the University of Mississippi where he was named the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2013 and received All-SEC honors in 2015. A highly accomplished collegiate pass-catcher, Treadwell was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings with the 23rd overall pick but failed to make much of an impact in his three years in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

After catching on with the Falcons in 2020, he signed with the Jaguars in 2021, playing in 12 games while only starting in seven last year for Jacksonville. His production in Duval County was good for the best of his career, as he posted 434 yards on 33 receptions, but only managed one touchdown.

Expect him to catch on elsewhere, whether on a practice squad or on a receiver-needy team that wants a lanky red zone threat to add to their mix of pass-catchers. While Treadwell may not be the fastest receiver in the NFL, he has proven to be a reliable target in his six years as a pro and may be able to thrive in the right situation.

This move was a clear indicator that the Jaguars’ coaching staff is comfortable with the talent they brought in at the position in the offseason. As a result, it would appear that they’re willing to part with a known commodity in order to maximize the contributions of their starters and younger talent this season. What this means for players like Laviska Shenault and Jamal Agnew is unclear, but the team could look to cut another veteran receiver to make way for preseason standout Tim Jones on the final roster.

4 Jaguars with the most to prove in Preseason Week 2

These #Jaguars should have a major chip on their shoulder when #Jacksonville plays the #Pittsburgh #Steelers on Saturday

Just two games stand between the Jacksonville Jaguars and their shot to make some sparks fly in the 2022 regular season. With so much young talent on the roster and a new coaching staff ready to prove their doubters wrong, the preseason is a perfect chance for the team to hone their craft and form a cohesive unit before the games count.

As it stands, the 85 players under contract in Jacksonville all have a chip on their collective shoulders as they look to improve on their wasted 2021 campaign. Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers could prove to be an opportunity to really show some life against a legitimately challenging opponent.

Here are four players that could use a huge performance to justify a spot on the final 53-man roster in September:

WATCH: Jaguars’ WR Laquon Treadwell mic’d up vs. Browns

#Jaguars receiver Laquon Treadwell had the time of his life while mic’d up vs #Browns, and we’re here for every second of it.

Few players have more to prove for the 2022 Jacksonville Jaguars than receiver Laquon Treadwell, who is seeking to re-ignite his career with the team this season. Though he hasn’t managed to live up to the expectations that are typical for first-round picks, Treadwell has seemingly found new life in North Florida and was mic’d up for his Preseason Week 3 performance against the Browns.

Check out the video posted by the Jaguars on Thursday and try not to become his biggest fan:

He was clearly enjoying himself in warmups, coining the nickname “Swagnew” for teammate Jamal Agnew with whom he is competing for a roster spot. After chumming it up with his fellow receivers, Treadwell gave some encouragement to rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd.

Though he didn’t see much action against the Browns, the fifth-year receiver showed a lot of spunk in the short glimpse the team gave into his personality in the video. His joie de vivre may not be enough to secure him a spot on the final 53-man roster, but the team will certainly lose a larger-than-life character if they decide to part ways with Treadwell as cut-downs start in the coming weeks.
