Texans G Lane Taylor says QB Davis Mills’ confidence has grown

Houston Texans guard Lane Taylor says that rookie quarterback Davis Mills has grown in his confidence throughout 2021.

Houston Texans rookie quarterback Davis Mills compiled and 0-6 record as a starter as Tyrod Taylor recovered from his strained hamstring. The third-rounder from Stanford had plenty to learn from.

After Taylor proved to be inadequate as a starter, Mills regained the reins. In the four starts since, the Texans have gone 2-2 with a 1-1 record on the road.

Guard Lane Taylor has played seven games, starting in four of them, and has been an eyewitness to the development of Mills.

“I think it’s been impressive the way he’s developed throughout the year,” said Taylor. “He was clearly a rookie this training camp, doing a lot of rookie things. But over the course of the year, you can tell he’s just grown and grown and grown, and really taken over the huddle and done great things. I look for him to keep improving over the years.”

One area where Taylor attests to the growth of Mills is his confidence.

Said Taylor: “I think as an offensive lineman you can really feed off your quarterback. If he’s confident then you’re going to be confident, but if he’s in there, he’s stumbling with the play call or he clearly gets something wrong, you’re not as confident going out there. So, his confidence really reflects on everyone else.”

The Texans have one more game to go as they host the Tennessee Titans Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium. The game will still be of consequence as the Titans haven’t fully clinched the No. 1 seed. If the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos on Saturday, it will place a great deal of emphasis on Houston’s tilt with the Titans, as a loss could ensure the Chiefs get a first-round bye for the fourth straight postseason.

Texans place G Lane Taylor on COVID-19 reserve

The Houston Texans have placed guard Lane Taylor on the COVID-19 reserve.

The Houston Texans will be down another offensive lineman as they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at TIAA Bank Field.

The Texans placed guard Lane Taylor on the COVID-19 reserve. Houston previously placed guard Justin McCray on the COVID-19 reserve, which means both of Houston’s starting guards from Week 14 won’t face the Jaguars.

Taylor had started the past three games for the Texans, giving Houston a veteran presence along the interior offensive line.

The placement of Taylor on the COVID-19 list opens the opportunity for Houston to play Max Scharping at one of the guard spots.

Texans C Justin Britt having fun with different guard combinations

Houston Texans center Justin Britt says that he likes working with different guards with Lane Taylor and Justin McCray.

The Houston Texans went with another guard combination in Week 14 against the Seattle Seahawks as veterans Justin McCray and Lane Taylor started along the interior offensive line.

Taylor made his third consecutive start of the season at left guard as McCray switched over to the right side to replace Max Scharping.

Center Justin Britt thought the combination had some success against the Seahawks.

“I feel like any of us in the room can start for an NFL team,” Britt said. “So, whenever someone plugs in, it’s just, all right, let’s figure out how we gel together and make that work for the best because Lane blocks different than McCray and both block differently than Max. So, you’ve just got to rep, and repetition and going about it.”

The Texans’ offense generated 380 total yards, the first time since Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams Houston had over 300 yards. The Texans fell 33-13, but the game was close early in the fourth quarter with Houston trailing 19-13 at NRG Stadium.

The run game continues to be an issue for Houston as they tallied 63 yards on 25 carries with a 2.5 yards per carry. If the chemistry with Britt and the rest of the offensive linemen excels, so could the interior blocking.

“I’m having a lot of fun working with these guys up front,” said Britt. “The season’s gone a little rough, but the relationships and how we come about it, how we go to work throughout the week, we’re being professionals about this. We’ll do the same this week.”

Houston protected quarterback Davis Mills fairly well with just two sacks taken. In his last start against the Rams, Mills was sacked five times.

The Texans go on the road to play the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15 at TIAA Bank Field.

Texans place DE Jordan Jenkins on injured reserve among 3 roster transactions

The Houston Texans have placed defensive end Jordan Jenkins on injured reserve among three roster moves.

The Houston Texans have placed defensive end Jordan Jenkins on injured reserve.

The former New York Jets 2016 third-round pick won’t get to go against his former team as a knee injury kept him out of practice all week. Jenkins sustained the knee injury in the 22-13 win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 11.

The Texans signed guard Lane Taylor from the practice squad to the active roster to fill the void left behind by Jenkins, who has 17 combined tackles, three tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, and 1.5 sacks through eight games this season.

Houston also designated safety Jonathan Owens as their standard elevation from the practice squad.

The Houston Texans have placed center Justin Britt on injured reserve along with five total roster transactions.

The Houston Texans have placed center Justin Britt on injured reserve.

The 30-year-old had been battling a knee injury that branded him as questionable for the Week 8 tilt with the Los Angeles Rams. Britt missed Week 6 at the Indianapolis Colts with the same knee issue.

Britt had missed all of 2020 as he recovered from a torn ACL sustained in his final year with the Seattle Seahawks in October 2019.

The Texans also signed center-guard Cole Toner from the practice squad to the active roster.

Houston’s two standard elevations from the practice squad are guard Lane Taylor and linebacker Hardy Nickerson.

The Texans also signed punter Johnny Townsend to the practice squad.

Texans G Lane Taylor working back from injury

Houston Texans coach David Culley provided an update for how guard Lane Taylor is progressing from his knee injury.

The Houston Texans offensive line may be getting more help along the way.

According to coach David Culley, guard Lane Taylor, who has been rehabilitating from a knee injury that cost his 2020 season just one game in, is coming along well.

“Lane is still trying to get it all figured out from the standpoint of where he fits and making sure that things are right with him physically,” Culley said Wednesday. “He’s getting there, much better physically. He’s not unhealthy right now. It’s just working him back in. He’s still right there in the picture and at some point, could be available for us.”

The Texans have shuffled Tytus Howard from right tackle to left guard and have Max Scharping at right guard. The third-year players have given the interior offensive line spots youth along with some experience.

Taylor played for the Green Bay Packers from 2013-20. He has six years’ experience playing under Texans offensive line coach James Campen, who was the Packers’ offensive line coach from 2007-18.

Texans OT Marcus Cannon, G Lane Taylor to start camp on PUP list

The Houston Texans have placed tackle Marcus Cannon and guard Lane Taylor on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp.

The Houston Texans have placed two offensive linemen on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp.

According to Aaron Wilson of Sports Talk 790, Marcus Cannon and Lane Taylor will go on the PUP list to start camp. They can be activated at any time, pending they pass their physicals.

Cannon had arthroscopic knee surgery in the offseason, and the procedure could sideline him for a large portion of training camp.

Taylor, 31, had surgery to repair his ACL, and is expected to compete for the starting job.

The Texans also released long snapper Mitchell Fabroni and are hosting Dennis Kelly, formerly of the Tennessee Titans, for a visit. Kelly is the brother of Houston offensive coordinator Tim Kelly.

Houston Texans 2021 player profile: G Lane Taylor

The Houston Texans’ new look interior offensive line will include a familiar James Campen player in Lane Taylor.

Lane Taylor defined all odds as an undrafted rookie when he landed with the Green Bay Packers in 2013. He became a vital piece in helping protect Aaron Rogers for seven consecutive seasons while making 50 career starts.

After missing out on all of the 2020 season, can Taylor define the odds again after sustaining a devastating knee injury?

According to an interview with center Justin Britt on May 20, Taylor brings leadership to the locker room along with former New England Patriots right tackle Marcus Cannon. What Taylor also has going for him is the current offensive line coach, James Campen, was also his position coach with the Packers from 2013-17. Campen was the position coach who helped Taylor develop into a quality starter.

In 2021, the question will be whether Taylor can flourish again under Campen’s direction.

Breaking down Texans G Lane Taylor’s contract

The Houston Texans signed guard Lane Taylor to a one-year contract. Take a look at the details of the deal.

The Houston Texans bolstered the interior of their offensive line with the signing of former Green Bay Packers guard Lane Taylor.

According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the details of the one-year contract include $1.127 million with a $137,500 signing bonus and a $990,000 salary. $262,500 of that salary is guaranteed. Taylor’s deal counts $987,500 against the salary cap under a veteran salary benefit, and the deal also includes an injury waiver, which lessens the risk on Houston’s part to take a chance on a player who has only played three games over the past two seasons.

Taylor has the benefit of having previously worked with the Texans’ offensive line coach, James Campen, who had been with the Packers from 2004-18. However, Campen was the Packers’ offensive line coach from 2007-18, which gave him plenty of years to work and understand the talent Taylor could bring to the Texans’ offensive line.

The Texans released guards Senio Kelemete and Zach Fulton in the offseason along with starting center Nick Martin.
