Watch: Mike Norvell takes helicopter to check in on a five-star recruit

Mike Norvell arrived at a high school football game in a helicopter.

Things aren’t too bad right now for Florida State and head coach Mike Norvell. On Sunday, his team beat LSU and then five days later, he took a helicopter to check in on one of the nation’s top 25 recruits.

A player who just so happens to be committed to Florida State.

Colquitt County (Moultrie, Georgia) tight end Landen Thomas, a five-star tight end according to 247Sports, was the center of the impressive visit from Norvell. The Florida State head coach certainly arrived in style via the helicopter, a move that is as much about ease and expedience as it is simply about making a splash.

Social media was buzzing about Norvell’s arrival in the chopper, and that is exactly the kind of recruiting cache that a head coach needs to keep a blue-chip prospect like Thomas committed.

Norvell’s arrival is certainly quite the buzz at the game, leading to a host of social media reactions. None better than this one, though:

Florida State flips consensus top-50 prospect TE Landen Thomas from Georgia

The Florida State Seminoles made a major splash on Monday on the recruiting trail.

The Florida State Seminoles made a huge splash on the recruiting trail on Monday when they flipped consensus 2024 top-50 prospect, TE Landen Thomas from the Georgia Bulldogs.

Thomas, a standout out at Colquitt County is a native of Moultrie, Georgia. While many view it as a major in-state recruiting loss for the Bulldogs, it is worth noting that Tallahassee is significantly closer to Moultrie than it is to Athens. Thomas was originally committed to the Bulldogs on Jul. 7, 2022, and remained until Monday when made the decision to flip to the Seminoles.

Across the recruiting industry, Thomas is highly regarded with each of the three major recruiting networks ranking him inside their top 40 prospects nationally. ESPN has him as the 48th-best player in the country, his lowest ranking. Three of the four also have him as the top tight-end prospect in the 2024 recruiting cycle.

Other notable offers that Thomas holds in his recruitment include Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Miami (FL), Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas, and USC.

For Mike Norvell and his program, Thomas becomes the highest-rated member of their 11-member 2024 recruiting class. They also hold commitments from consensus top-100 prospect running back, Kameron Davis and four-star quarterback Luke Kromenhoek, who is considered a top-100 prospect by both On3 and 247Sports.

The Seminoles 2024 recruiting class is ranked fifth in the country by 247Sports, On3, and Rivals.

5-star flips commitment from Georgia to ACC school

This one hurts…

On Monday, five-star 2024 tight end Landen Thomas flipped his commitment from Georgia to Florida State.

Thomas ranks as the nation’s No. 24 overall player and as the No. 1 tight end. He attends Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Georgia. Thomas had been committed to UGA since July.

Georgia now has 11 players in its 2024 class, with five-star cornerback Ellis Robinson IV being the top ranked player at No. 7. Thomas was Georgia’s second-highest ranked player prior to his decommitment.

Georgia should be fine at the position for the future, though losing a talent like Thomas still hurts. For 2023, Georgia’s set with Brock Bowers and Oscar Delp. There’s also true freshmen Lawson Luckie and Pearce Spurlin III, who both signed as 4-stars in the class of 2023.

All but Bowers will return after this season. Plus, Georgia picked up a commitment from 2025 five-star tight end Elyiss Williams last week, who ranks as the No. 1 tight end in the nation for his class.

Unlike 2023 where he only offered Arch Manning, Sark has extended several offers to QB’s this cycle.

Thomas chose the Bulldogs over Michigan, Florida and 30 others.

Nation’s No. 1 TE for 2024, Landen Thomas, has made his college decision

5-star TE Landen Thomas, the top TE in the nation for the class of 2024, has committed to Georgia!

It’s been a busy month of July for the Georgia Bulldogs on the recruiting front.

There’s been commitments and there’s been decommitments, but Thursday provided arguably the biggest news of any for Kirby Smart and the Dawgs.

2024 5-star tight end Landen Thomas announced his commitment to Georgia on Thursday via his Twitter account.

Thomas ranks as the nation’s No. 1 ranked tight end in the class of 2024 and as the No. 24 overall player in the nation, per 247Sports.

Out of Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Georgia, Thomas is a 6-foot-4, 230 pound playmaker who recorded 31 receptions for 516 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

Thomas was also considering Michigan and Florida, but ultimately decided to join a Georgia team that currently has superstars at the position in Brock Bowers, Darnell Washington, Arik Gilbert and Oscar Delp. Tight end coach Todd Hartley has proven to be worth every penny of his $650,000 salary.

“It’s just the love I was getting from the coaches, especially Coach Hartley,” Thomas told 247Sports when asked about his decision. “They use their tight ends a lot and it’s my home state … [Coach Hartley], he just shows you that he really wants you.”

Hartley reacted to the news on Thursday, referencing the Packers. That’s because the Colquitt County High School Packers have given Georgia two commitments this week in the class of 2024 in both Thomas and 4-star wide receiver Ny Carr.

Top TE in class of 2024 leaves Florida visit impressed with Napier, coaches

Landen Thomas will be one of the bigger names Florida pursues in the class of 2024, and things are going well early on.

Another one of Florida’s top targets in the class of 2024 visited campus recently.

[autotag]Landen Thomas[/autotag], a rising junior out of Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Georgia, is the No. 1-ranked tight end on 247Sports’ individual rankings and No. 2 at the position on the 247Sports composite. He was in Gainesville Tuesday, according to 247Sports.

Thomas saw the campus and academic buildings with his family before heading over to the football facilities. The highlight of his second trip to the Swamp was meeting with coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] in person and spending time with tight ends coach [autotag]William Peagler[/autotag].

“We had a good conversation,” Thomas said of his meeting with Napier. “We didn’t really talk about recruiting that much, but he told me I am a special talent and he thinks he can do big things with me at Florida. I spent like almost the whole day with Coach Peagler.”

Thomas also said that Peagler earned some favor after cracking jokes and proving himself as a “real cool coach who likes to have fun.” Florida isn’t looking to add a ton of names at tight end in the 2023 class, which sets Thomas up nicely without too much competition in the year ahead of him.

He’s in no rush to make a decision, though. At this point, all Thomas knows is that Florida, Georgia and Michigan have stood out so far and are his unofficial leaders for now. Things should start to hit up for him as the class of 2023 gets sorted and more programs get more aggressive in recruiting the next group of kids.

Oklahoma Sooners extend offer to 2024’s No. 1 tight end Landen Thomas

The Oklahoma Sooners extended an offer to the No. 1 tight end in the 2024 class Landen Thomas.

Since [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] took over as head coach, the Oklahoma Sooners have made a concerted effort to wade into SEC and ACC country and recruit the southeast. They’re doing so again with the No. 1 tight end in the 2024 recruiting class, [autotag]Landen Thomas[/autotag].

Thomas, who’s being recruited by a who’s who of college football programs, is a top 10 player in the state of Georgia and ranks as a top 50 prospect by 247Sports and On3.

Early in his recruiting process, it looks as if Georgia is the leader for Thomas’ services, but Joe Jon Finley and the Sooners will take their shot to land one of the most athletic players in the 2024 class.

As a sophomore, Thomas comes in at 6-4, 230 lbs, giving him the size to be an impact player from day one. He’s also got the frame to add even more weight, while not diminishing his athleticism.

Already he has the speed to run away from the defense and shows an ability to make things happen after the catch. Thomas’ acceleration stands out. He gets upfield in a hurry whether in-line or split into the slot. He shows good awareness of route spacing and how to use the field to his advantage.

The only Crystal Ball prediction for Landen Thomas comes from 247Sports Southeast Recruiting Analyst Andrew Ivins, who has Thomas going to Georgia. On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine echos those sentiments with Georgia at a 90.8% chance to land the talented tight end.

But, as we’ve seen with Brent Venables and company, it isn’t over till it’s over. With an offer on the table, they’ll begin pushing for a visit so they can sell Norman, the University of Oklahoma, and the culture in the football program.
