How to watch, key players for No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners in the Cowgirl Challenge

The Sooners are back in action with a five game weekend slate and here is how you can watch each game.

The Oklahoma Sooners started their season undefeated, going 4-0 last week in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. They also remained the unanimous No. 1 team in the country after picking up a pair of top 10 wins.

This weekend, they have a five-game slate, including two days of double-headers. They will face Central Arkansas, McNeese State, and Lamar this weekend in Lake Charles, Lousiana.

Oklahoma’s weekend opponents have a combined record of 7-7, with McNeese State owning the best record of the bunch at 4-1. McNeese State was lost in the Seattle Regional final after eliminating Minnesota and taking game from host Washington. Central Arkansas has struggled to start the year but they were a tournament team just a season ago.

So, let’s take a look at how you can watch each game and see who are some of the key players for all five teams.

Game Recap: Softball No. 25 Texas A&M vs Lamar

The Aggie softball team gets their 20th win of the season after beating Lamar 3-2 in a mid-week battle

The No. 25 Texas A&M softball team has been playing some good ball lately to the point D1Softball has them ranked as high as 15. However, after scoring 25 runs over the weekend against a top-15 team the Aggies struggled at the plate for most of the game. It took all seven innings for Texas A&M to put Lamar away with a walk-off hit.

The Aggies just couldn’t anything going as both teams traded scoreless innings until the bottom of the third. Keely Williams, who probably could’ve been named freshman of the week after the Kentucky series, got a single through the left side then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Morgan Smith would get hit by a pitch putting runners on first and third. On a double steal, Smith got thrown out at second, but it allowed Williams to score to take a 1-0 lead.

That lead only lasted one inning as Lamar hit two home runs in the top of the fifth to go up 1-2. Trisha Ford made the switch to the closer Emily Leavitt, and she was lights out.

With Leavitt keeping Lamar in check the Aggies were able to tie the game with a Koko Wooley single scoring Julia Cottrill from second base. After hitting a batter Leavitt and a sac bunt, she struck out the final two batters to get them to the bottom of the seventh with a chance to win it.

In almost a mirror image of the bottom of the third lead batter, Williams hit a double into left center. Smith with the sac bunt advanced Williams to third while she got thrown out at first. Lamar intentionally walked Cottrill to get to Trinity Cannon who was 0-3 on the day so far. Well, Cannon took that personally and hit a laser down the left-field line for a walk-off single to take the win 3-2.

Final Score: Aggies 3, Cardinals 2 – W: Leavitt, Emily (7-4); L: Niedenthal, Cameron (2-4)

The Aggies will be back in action on March 29th at 6 pm at Davis Diamond to take on UIW for the second-midweek game.

SMU vs Lamar Game Preview

Why Lamar Will Win

The Cardinals need SMU to be thinking about the trip to Maryland and dates with TCU and UCF to follow.

Lamar lost the opener to Abilene Christian 28-14 with a rough day from the offense after getting up 14-7 in the first quarter. The defense was able to keep the ACU passing game from cranking up big pass plays, and in this it has to keep the SMU offense from turning the short throws into anything big.

Try to control the clock, capitalize on every opportunity, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why SMU Will Win

Yeah, the time of possession battle. That’s going to be a problem for Lamar.

It couldn’t get the defense off the field last week – allowing Abilene Christian convert half of its third down chances – and it’s going to have a nightmare of a time keeping SMU’s O from getting going.

It looked and played in midseason form in the first game under new head coach Rhett Lashlee, with Tanner Mordecai throwing for 432 yards and four scores in the 48-10 win over North Texas, and Lamar doesn’t have the pass rush to make things rougher on the Mustang backfield this week.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

SMU will score as much as it wants to. It’ll get up fast, take its foot off the gas, and get the twos in the game as soon as possible with all the big games coming up.

Lamar will struggle to score and won’t get on the board until late.
