LSU transfer portal update: Five safeties LSU should target

Here are LSU’s potential options as the Tigers look to add a safety

LSU football has been busy in the transfer portal since it opened last Monday. So far, the Tigers have added nine players in the portal, including impact starters on both sides of the ball.

LSU isn’t done yet, though. A few needs persist, including at safety and offensive line.

We’ll look at safety today.

LSU got inconsistent safety play in 2024. [autotag]Major Burns[/autotag], [autotag]Sage Ryan[/autotag], and [autotag]Jardin Gilbert[/autotag] are talented players but had their fair share of struggles. Ryan hit the transfer portal, and Burns is set to graduate.

Safeties [autotag]Jordan Allen[/autotag] and [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag] joined Ryan in the portal, leaving LSU thin at the position.

LSU likes what it saw from true freshman Dashawn Spears in 2024. Still, adding talent to the room is needed if LSU’s defense wants another step forward.

The Tigers have already lost a couple of the top available safety transfers, but good options remain. Here are five names to know as Brian Kelly and staff continue to bolster the 2024 roster.

Tawfiq Byard, USF

Gary Cosby Jr.-Imagn Images

There’s mutual interest between Byard and LSU after the safety took a visit to Baton Rouge earlier this week.

Byard was a three-star recruit in the class of 2023 and saw minimal action as a freshman, but 2024 was a breakout campaign for the sophomore.

Byard’s PFF run defense grade ranks top 40 among safeties with 450+ snaps. That’s what LSU needs on the backend after the Tigers struggled to contain explosive runs in 2024.

Genesis Smith, Arizona

Aryanna Frank-USA TODAY Sports

According to On3, Smith is the top uncommitted safety in the transfer portal. He started 11 games with the Wildcats in 2024, lining up at safety and in the slot. If LSU wants to replace the versatility of Sage Ryan, Smith is the guy.

Smith came up with three picks and forced two fumbles in 2024. He’s 6’2′, which gives him the physicality to play in Blake Baker’s defense.

Tyson Flowers, Rice

According to the On3 Industry Rankings, Rice is the No. 188 ranked player in the transfer portal. His PFF defense grade of 78.8 ranked 45th among FBS safeties in 2024. He has 867 career snaps and could be ready to make the jump to the Power Four.

He can play at safety or in the box and would be a fit to step into Major Burns’ role.

Caleb Weaver, Sam Houston State

Mike Watters-Imagn Images

Weaver is one of the most experienced options on the market, with over 1,800 career snaps. He’s listed at 5’9′, but he was still one of the nation’s most productive safeties in 2024, even against the run.

Weave broke up six passes while making 72 tackles. That’s the type of production LSU needs on the backend.

Jalen Stroman, Virginia Tech

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

LSU already landed one Virginia Tech defensive back this cycle, adding cornerback Mansoor Delane. Stroman is one of the most talented safeties in the portal, though injuries are a concern.

When Stroman was healthy in 2023, he made 15 stops and allowed just eight catches. LSU may want to avoid taking a gamble, but Stroman offers an upside option.

LSU football loses another four-star to the transfer portal

LSU will lose a handful of players when the portal opens next week, including this four-star safety

LSU is losing another defender to the transfer portal.

[autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag], a four-star recruit in 2023, told On3 he intended to hit the portal when it opens next week.

Jackson was a top 200 recruit in the class of 2023 and ranked as the No. 13 safety in the country per the On3 Industry Rankings. He played 14 defensive snaps as a true freshman in 2023 before playing 50 in 2024. He leaves with three years of eligibility remaining.

Rivals was the highest on Jackson coming out of high school, slotting him No. 11 nationally at his position.

Safety is a position of need for LSU and losing a talent like Jackson hurts. It’s hard to say who he is as a player yet due to the limited sample size, but Jackson should have ample suitors on the portal.

According to PFF, Jackson recorded two pressures and a stop in 2024. He was targeted three times and didn’t allow a catch.

LSU will have to look to rebuild its safety room in the transfer portal again.

LSU makes key change to depth chart ahead of Nicholls game

LSU makes a key update to its defensive depth chart prior to its Week 2 match vs Nicholls.

LSU football is making some adjustments after its week one loss to USC. Among those changes is an update to the depth chart at safety.

In a depth chart released prior to kickoff vs Nicholls State, [autotag]Dashawn Spears[/autotag] and [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag] as starters. [autotag]Jordan Allen[/autotag] and [autotag]Jardin Gilbert[/autotag], LSU’s starting safeties in week one, are now listed with the second team.

Spears is a true freshman, but he turned heads throughout LSU’s fall camp. Head coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said last month that Spears would get a chance to play in 2024, so this comes as no surprise.

According to On3, Spears was a four-star recruit and a top 100 overall player in the 2024 class.

As for Jackson, he was a four-star and top 200 recruit in the class of 2023. He played just 14 defensive snaps as a freshman in 2023 but saw eight snaps against USC.

LSU’s secondary had some struggles last week with USC taking advantage of LSU’s safeties for some big plays.

https://twitter.com/Clukehubbard/status/1832537676362178710

Don’t expect Gilbert and Allen to disappear from the rotation. Allen flashed some talent last week, making four tackles and breaking up a pass.

LSU’s conference schedule gets underway next week so the staff could be using a game against an FCS team to get some run for the young guys.

2023 LSU Tigers Snapshot Profile: No. 23 Kylin Jackson

Kylin Jackson was the highest-rated safety signee in LSU’s 2023 class.

Going into the 2023 football season, LSU Wire will be looking at each player listed on the Tigers’ roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Brian Kelly this season.

We’re looking at more true freshmen on the defensive side of the ball, this time Zachary, Louisiana, safety [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag]. The highest-rated safety signee in the 2023 class and top-250 national prospect should provide much-needed depth in the defensive backfield and could also play a role on special teams in 2023.

BREAKING: LSU defensive back target commits to Mississippi State

The Tigers missed on the top uncommitted safety on their board in Isaac Smith.

It’s been a great early signing day for the Tigers so far, but they missed one of the top remaining uncommitted prospects on their board when [autotag]Isaac Smith[/autotag] signed with Mississippi State.

The safety from Itawamba Agricultural (Fulton, Mississippi) received several Crystal Balls from 247Sports for the Tigers, but he had been trending toward Mississippi State in recent days and picked up a prediction for MSU from Steve Wiltfong Wednesday morning. His commitment to the Bulldogs doesn’t come as a major surprise.

Smith is rated as the No. 162 player in the country, per the 247Sports Composite, and he would have been the third-highest-rated defensive back in LSU’s class.

Still, the Tigers have a fantastic secondary class that includes top-100 safety [autotag]Javien Toviano[/autotag]. They also have commitments from safeties Ryan Yaites, [autotag]Michael Daugherty[/autotag] and [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag].

How to watch Louisiana native and former LSU QB Lindsey Scott in FCS semifinal on Friday night

Here’s how to catch former Louisiana Player of the Year in Friday night’s FCS semifinal game against North Dakota State.

A former Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year will try to punch his ticket to the FCS Championship on Friday night.

[autotag]Lindsey Scott[/autotag], who began his collegiate career at LSU, has become a prolific playmaker at Incarnate Word. He and the Cardinals are traveling north to face FCS powerhouse North Dakota State.

Scott played his high school ball at Zachary, the same place as current LSU commit [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag]. Among other stops, he also spent a couple years at Nicholls just before ending up at UIW.

Incarnate Word, the nation’s leading offense, is coming off a 66-63 shootout victory over Sacramento State where Scott totaled 385 yards and six touchdowns.

The semi-final contest will kick off at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2. According to BetMGM, North Dakota State is an 8.5-point favorite.

Things have come a little easier for the Bison, which has won both of its playoff games by two scores or more. Scott’s Cardinals have been in back-to-back one-possession battles.

The two programs haven’t met since 2014.

LSU the favorite to land five-star safety

The Tigers’ 2023 class may be about to get even better.

[autotag]Javien Toviano[/autotag] is a five-star safety on Rivals and a four-star on every other recruiting site. He is a 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback from Arlington, Texas, where he plays for Martin High School.

The Warriors have started the 2022 season 2-1 after losing a non-district game to Allen last week 27-16. Per On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, LSU has become the favorite to land the talented safety.

The Tigers currently have 22 commitments for the 2023 recruiting class, which ranks seventh in the country at the moment. If Toviano were to commit, he would join [autotag]Michael Daughtery[/autotag], [autotag]Ryan Yaites[/autotag] and [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag] as safety commits for the 2023 class.

Brian Kelly has done a great job so far of recruiting really good players to come to the Bayou next season, and he’s still working on landing even more.

Where is LSU in the latest recruiting rankings?

The Tigers are approaching a top-five class after its recruiting momentum has continued into August.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the LSU Tigers coaching staff have had a great month of August so far. The Tigers landed four excellent prospects for the class of 2023, [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag], [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag] and [autotag]Khai Prean[/autotag].

So how does that affect the recruiting rankings for the Tigers?

According to the new On3 rankings, LSU has moved up to the sixth position overall and they may not be done landing commitments. [autotag]Zalance Heard[/autotag] and [autotag]Nyckoles Harbor[/autotag] are waiting in the wings.

Harbor doesn’t have a commitment date set yet, but Heard is set to commit on Sept. 1, and he is currently Crystal Balled to go to LSU. His commitment alone could move the Tigers up into the top five of the recruiting rankings.

That would be a nice present for Kelly as the season gets started next Sunday night against the Florida State Seminoles at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Watch: LSU commit Kylin Jackson lowers the boom in scrimmage.

Jackson showed off why he can be a game-changer in the secondary.

[autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag] is a four-star, 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety from Zachary, Louisiana, where he plays for Zachary High School.

The Broncos started off their 2022 campaign with a scrimmage game, and after recently committing to LSU, Jackson had only one thing on his mind: going out and knocking opposing players’ heads off.

As you can see in the clips he posted on Twitter, he was destroying players in run support as well as making his mark in coverage as he caught an interception. He may have to watch out for targeting in the first clip, but the other hits look clean to me.

He de-cleated the opposing running back on an option play that never stood a chance of being successful. Plays like these are why many people think that Jackson could be the next legend to wear No. 7 for DBU and be a high draft pick from the Tigers’ secondary.

Four-star athlete Khai Prean commits to LSU

Prean gives the Tigers 21 commits for the 2023 class, which ranks sixth nationally.

The Tigers’ run of success in the state of Louisiana for the 2023 class continued on Tuesday as coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] picked up a commitment from a top in-state talent.

Four-star St. James athlete [autotag]Khai Prean[/autotag] chose the Tigers over Auburn, Florida State and Mississippi State. Prean, who plays both receiver and in the secondary at the high school level but will likely stick to offense for LSU, is rated as the No. 259 overall prospect and the 15th-best in Louisiana.

His commitment gives LSU 21 commits in total for the 2023 class. The Tigers’ group remains ranked sixth nationally, but if they could pick up another commitment — such as five-star in-state tackle [autotag]Zalance Heard[/autotag] — they could sneak into the top five.

Despite early concerns about his recruiting acumen in the Pelican State, Kelly has been crushing it on the trail in the Tigers’ backyard. Just in the month of August, he has picked up pledges from five-star receiver [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag] and four-star quarterback [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag] (both natives of Baton Rouge) and defensive back [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag] (Zachary).
