Former LSU receiver Khai Prean commits to Tulane

Khai Prean is staying in the state of Louisiana.

Former Tigers wide receiver [autotag]Khai Prean[/autotag] won’t be leaving the state of Louisiana, after all.

On Monday, Prean announced his commitment to Tulane as a transfer. The former four-star receiver entered the transfer portal last Wednesday following one season at LSU in which he redshirted and didn’t make any appearances.

Listed as an athlete coming out of Saint James, Louisiana, in the 2023 class, Prean was a top-500 recruit. However, even with the departures of [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag], he remained buried on the receiver depth chart entering 2024.

LSU still has quite a bit of depth at the position between projected starters [autotag]Kyren Lacy[/autotag], [autotag]Zavion Thomas[/autotag] and [autotag]CJ Daniels[/autotag], depth players [autotag]Aaron Anderson[/autotag] and [autotag]Chris Hilton Jr.[/autotag], as well as young players who could be poised for a breakout like [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Kyle Parker[/autotag].

Prean will join a Tulane team coming off another double-digit win season, but the 2024 campaign will be the first under new coach Jon Sumrall after Willie Fritz left to take the Houston job.

LSU preferred walk-on cornerback enters transfer portal

Ryan Robinson Jr., a New Orleans native, walked on at LSU last fall despite holding multiple Division I offers.

The LSU Tigers football team has already seen a pair of scholarship players opt to move on since the spring transfer portal opened ā€” defensive end [autotag]Jaxon Howard[/autotag] and receiver [autotag]Khai Prean[/autotag].

But now, LSU is also losing a redshirt freshman preferred walk-on who could have ultimately found a role on the team. Cornerback [autotag]Ryan Robinson Jr.[/autotag], a New Orleans native, is moving on after one season at LSU.

Robinson was a three-star recruit and top-35 player in the state of Louisiana, but he turned down multiple Division I scholarship offers to join the Tigers. As a true freshman in 2023, he appeared in four games, mostly seeing special teams action.

He played the cornerback spot against Grambling and recorded two tackles, while he added one more on special teams against Ole Miss.

Robinson likely wasn’t in line to start or even see significant reps this season, but with depth at cornerback already a concern, the Tigers may look to add someone during the spring transfer portal window.

LSU redshirt freshman receiver enters transfer portal

Khai Prean is moving on after a redshirt season in 2023 in which he didn’t appear in any games.

LSU has seen its second transfer portal departure in the spring window as redshirt freshman receiver [autotag]Khai Prean[/autotag] opted to enter the portal on Wednesday.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Prean entered the portal with a no-contact tag. That would seemingly indicate that he already knows where he’s going, or at least has a shortlist.

Prean joins [autotag]Jaxon Howard[/autotag] as LSU’s spring transfer portal entrants so far, but Howard signaled his intention to transfer prior to the window opening on Tuesday.

A four-star recruit and top-20 recruit nationally, the Belle Rose, Louisiana, native didn’t appear in any games as a true freshman and ultimately took a redshirt year.

With Prean now out of the mix, LSU will turn to players like [autotag]Chris Hilton Jr.[/autotag], last year’s transfer addition [autotag]Aaron Anderson[/autotag] and fellow 2023 recruit Shelton Sampson Jr. for depth behind the new starting receiving corps, which seems to be comprised of [autotag]Kyren Lacy[/autotag], Mississippi State transfer [autotag]Zavion Thomas[/autotag] and [autotag]CJ Daniels[/autotag] as we complete spring ball.

LSU receiver signee Kylan Billiot among players who boosted stock at All-American Bowl

Kylan Billiot was a clear standout in San Antonio this week.

This past weekend weekend, we wrapped up the high school all-star game circuit as the annual All-American Bowl was held in San Antonio.

The Tigers had four signees in the 2024 class who participated in the All-American Bowl, and one of them may have done a lot to boost his stock at the end of the cycle.

On3’s Cody Bellaire listed receiver [autotag]Kylan Billiot[/autotag] as one of several players who are trending up after their performance this week. A four-star prospect from Terrebonne (Houma, LA), Billiot ranks just inside the top 300 of the 247Sports Composite Rankings. However, that ranking could rise in the coming weeks.

Here’s what Bellaire said about his performance in San Antonio.

We were excited to learn Kylan Billiot was added to the All-American Bowl roster, feeling he is a prospect who could really move the needle with a great showing. With that said, he started the week off with a bang. We knew the athleticism and size was going to show up, but the improvement in his ball skills was quickly evident as he made multiple acrobatic catches and displayed some strong hands during the 1-on-1 period. As the week progressed, the LSU signee showed progress in his route-running and ability to separate on intermediate routes. While he has always had the top-end speed to blow by defenders on vertical routes, the ability to break off defenders at the top of the route was evident. The improvement is notable, given his limited time playing football. Billiot may have been held relatively quiet during the All-American Bowl, but the progress heā€™s shown illustrates his upside and ability to take coaching. The physical tools and athleticism are certainly there. Thereā€™s no question Billiotā€™s best football is ahead of him as he continues to improve his technical skills.

Billiot could have a path to immediate playing time as LSU loses receivers [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] and [autotag]Brian Thomas Jr.[/autotag] to the draft. It still returns veterans like [autotag]Kyren Lacy[/autotag], [autotag]Chris Hilton Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Aaron Anderson[/autotag] as well as 2023 signees [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Khai Prean[/autotag], who both redshirted as true freshmen.

LSU true freshman receiver makes a position change

Receiver Khai Prean has moved to cornerback after redshirting in 2023.

Ahead of the ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin, it seems a member of LSU’s 2023 signing class has made a position change.

Receiver [autotag]Khai Prean[/autotag], a former four-star recruit from Saint James, has moved to cornerback. He also changed his jersey number from No. 82 to No. 28.

Prean was listed as an athlete as a recruit, ranking just outside the top 400 nationally. He played on both sides of the ball in high school, and he was listed on LSU’s depth chart as a cornerback ahead of the matchup against the Badgers.

He will take a redshirt this season as he hasn’t appeared in a game, but he could potentially make his debut in the game against the Badgers.

Prean will help provide added depth in 2024 at a position where the Tigers really need it. Outside of veteran [autotag]Zy Alexander[/autotag], the team is likely to rely heavily on young players in the secondary next fall.

2023 LSU Tigers Snapshot Profile: No. 82 Khai Prean

Khai Prean is a four-star wide receiver from Belle Rose, Louisiana, who looks to make his name known in Year 1 on the Bayou.

Going into the 2023 football season, LSU Wire will be looking at each player listed on the Tigersā€™ roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play forĀ Brian KellyĀ this season.

Today, we are going to look at one of the talented wide receiver prospects Kelly brought in for the 2023 recruiting class. [autotag]Khai Prean[/autotag] is a four-star wide receiver from Belle Rose, Louisiana that looks to make his name known in Year 1 on the bayou.

Where LSU stands in the 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings after Zalance Heard’s commitment

After landing yet another top-100 prospect, the Tigers are on the rise.

The month of August may not have been as explosive on the recruiting trail for the Tigers as July was, but they were able to maintain a lot of their momentum.

Coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] added three blue-chip commits to his 2023 class: five-star wideout [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag], four-star quarterback [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag] and four-star athlete [autotag]Khai Prean[/autotag] ā€” all Louisiana prospects.

Then, the Tigers kicked off September in a big way by landing offensive tackle [autotag]Zalance Heard[/autotag], another in-state prospect who is listed as a four-star by 247Sports but is a five-star according to other recruiting services.

With these pickups, here’s where Kelly’s class stands among the rest of the country per the 247Sports Composite.

Where is LSU in the latest recruiting rankings?

The Tigers are approaching a top-five class after its recruiting momentum has continued into August.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the LSU Tigers coaching staff have had a great month of August so far. The Tigers landed four excellent prospects for the class of 2023, [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag], [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag] and [autotag]Khai Prean[/autotag].

So how does that affect the recruiting rankings for the Tigers?

According to the new On3 rankings, LSU has moved up to the sixth position overall and they may not be done landing commitments. [autotag]Zalance Heard[/autotag] and [autotag]Nyckoles Harbor[/autotag] are waiting in the wings.

Harbor doesn’t have a commitment date set yet, but Heard is set to commit on Sept. 1, and he is currently Crystal Balled to go to LSU. His commitment alone could move the Tigers up into the top five of the recruiting rankings.

That would be a nice present for Kelly as the season gets started next Sunday night against the Florida State Seminoles at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Four-star athlete Khai Prean commits to LSU

Prean gives the Tigers 21 commits for the 2023 class, which ranks sixth nationally.

The Tigers’ run of success in the state of Louisiana for the 2023 class continued on Tuesday as coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] picked up a commitment from a top in-state talent.

Four-star St. James athlete [autotag]Khai Prean[/autotag] chose the Tigers over Auburn, Florida State and Mississippi State. Prean, who plays both receiver and in the secondary at the high school level but will likely stick to offense for LSU, is rated as the No. 259 overall prospect and the 15th-best in Louisiana.

His commitment gives LSU 21 commits in total for the 2023 class. The Tigers’ group remains ranked sixth nationally, but if they could pick up another commitment ā€” such as five-star in-state tackle [autotag]Zalance Heard[/autotag] ā€” they could sneak into the top five.

Despite early concerns about his recruiting acumen in the Pelican State, Kelly has been crushing it on the trail in the Tigers’ backyard. Just in the month of August, he has picked up pledges from five-star receiver [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag] and four-star quarterback [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag] (both natives of Baton Rouge) and defensive back [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag] (Zachary).

Let’s Talk About It: How is ‘Recruiting the Boot’ going for LSU?

Coach Brian Kelly has silenced much of the criticism surrounding his in-state recruiting.

For the past few months, there have been many posts on social media and football message boards about how LSU coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] was not doing a great job recruiting the best players from Louisiana. So, we’re going to take a look into how well the Tigers are doing when it comes to ‘Recruiting the Boot’.

Of the top 15 recruits in Louisiana for the class of 2023, LSU currently has five commits ([autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Kaleb Jackson[/autotag], [autotag]Kylin Jackson[/autotag], [autotag]Rickie Collins[/autotag] and [autotag]Tyree Adams[/autotag]) and they haveĀ  Crystal Ball projections for two more ([autotag]Zalance Heard[/autotag] and [autotag]Khai Prean[/autotag]).

If you go back one more spot, LSU could possibly land eight out of the top 16 players in the state ā€” [autotag]Trey Holly[/autotag], another LSU commit, is No. 16 on the list.

Sure, Kelly missed out on some of the top prospects like [autotag]Arch Manning[/autotag], [autotag]Derek Williams[/autotag], [autotag]Eli Holstein[/autotag] and [autotag]Tackett Curtis[/autotag], but this isn’t PokĆ©mon.

You aren’t going to catch them all.

Landing 50% of the top 16 players in the state is a very high clip. It’s also a lot more than anyone else has in your state. Out of the top 16 players, LSU could land eight while Texas has two (Manning and Williams). Alabama ([autotag]Eli Holstein[/autotag]), USC ([autotag]Tackett Curtis[/autotag]), Notre Dame ([autotag]Jaiden Ausberry[/autotag]), Nebraska ([autotag]Omarion Miller[/autotag]), Tennessee ([autotag]Jordan Matthews[/autotag]), and Washington ([autotag]Curley Reed[/autotag]) each have one.

No, it has not been a perfect recruiting cycle, but, in my opinion, it has been pretty successful.
